This person on Reddit had a Nexus 5, here are a few pictures (and a ton of questions answered)
Oct 31st 2013, 15:59, by Quentyn Kennemer

nexus 5 itw 1

Just a quick heads up in case you aren’t a Reddit dweller — someone over in those parts has the Nexus 5. Whoever the lucky soul is, they were nice enough to snap a ton of pics for us to sink our teeth into ahead of what could be a big unveiling later today. Sources suggest Google will be launching the device (as well as announcing the latest version of Android — KitKat 4.4) at noon pacific today.

While we are not interested in believing those rumors, that won’t keep us from peeling our eyes and looking out for any official news that might eek out of Mountain View today.

So what do we learn from this little escapade that Reddit user throwawaynexus5guy has gone on this morning? A good deal, actually:

  • Hangouts with SMS was pre-loaded onto the device
  • There is a complete backup solution built-in — think iCloud, except for Android.
  • In response to a question about always-on voice controls (Moto X), the leakster simply smiled :)
  • The leakster said it was as smooth as smooth can be. Android 4.3 is already pretty smooth on the aging Nexus 4, so we wouldn’t expect anything less here. Note that rumors are saying Android 4.4 has been designed to be able to work smoothly on even the weakest of hardware.
  • They said it doesn’t feel cheap “like a Samsung phone.” Their words, not ours.
  • There will be a Google Drive offer for 100GB of storage, which makes Drive the likely candidate for the built-in backup.
  • Battery life? 17 hours talk time, 8 hours web surfing, 6 hours of video watching, according to one engineer.
  • Camera is an improvement over Nexus 5, but nothing like the jump from iPhone 5 to iPhone 5S.
  • Speakers sounded really good, clear and loud.
  • It doesn’t taste like a KitKat bar.

That’s all we could gather from the questioned posted so far, and there’s a chance that many more could be answered in the hours to come. Be sure to sink your teeth into all of it over at the Reddit thread here, and stay tuned to Phandroid as we’ll be on top of the news as it happens (if it happens).

Android 4.4 KitKat to bring improvements to low-end market, wearables
Oct 31st 2013, 15:19, by Jason Cipriani

Another day and another rumor about the unreleased Android 4.4 KitKat operating system we know very little about. Perhaps shedding some more light on what’s to be found once the update is available, MobileSyrup is citing a report from Jessica Lessin that describes some of the improvements we can expect in Android 4.4.

One of the most notable changes to Android 4.4, according to the report, is that it will bring an easier upgrade path to low-memory devices from OEMs such as Huawei and ZTE. By making Android 4.4 KitKat less resource intensive on the lower-end market, the theory is that OEMs will take the time to bring the latest version of Android to recently released smartphones. Again, this is all in theory. A lot of work and resources have to be dedicated to such an upgrade, and OEMs may decide the bottom-tier devices just aren’t worth that type of investment. Then again, who knows, maybe they’ll jump at the opportunity. Only time will tell.

Also notable is the addition of better support for wearables, which as you know Google has already entered with Glass, and plans on entering again really soon with its own watch. Bluetooth and NFC improvements, along with the groundwork for KitKat devices to counts steps and track movement should all help out in that department.

Themer takes another Beta step in latest update
Oct 31st 2013, 15:53, by Jeff Causey

themer_app_icon

Themer, a new custom launcher from MyColorScreen, has taken another step on the way to being an officially released app. For the past four weeks, users who wanted to try out a beta build of Themer could enter their email address on the MyColorScreen web site in order to receive an activation code to be able to use the app. MyColorScreen has reported they have had 550,000 users apply for a code to be part of the quasi-open beta program and those users downloaded over 1.5 million themes. The update released yesterday removes the requirement for an activation code, so anyone with an Android 4.1 or better smartphone can install the free app and start installing themes immediately.

While easier to access now, Themer is still in a beta phase. There are a lot of users who have reported problems, both with individual themes as well as the settings for the app in general. The update does address some crash fixes. MyColorScreen also indicates they have added a “Hide Apps” function for the App Drawer, transparency for the App Drawer, and the ability to “Edit Favorites” in the App Drawer.

Hit one of the download links below after checking out some screenshots if you want to give Themer a try while it is still in beta.

The Great American Glass Contest: Win 1 of 9 Google Glass Invites!
Oct 31st 2013, 15:11, by Rob Jackson

If you cannot afford $1,500 for Google Glass or are an International Participant you are still eligible. In the event you win, we’ll substitute the Glass Invite with a $50 Google Play Gift Card and donate your invite to one random Android Forums member from this thread.

great-american-glass-contest

We first reviewed Google Glass in May but interest in the wearable tech hasn’t slowed down since the product was first announced and Sergey Brin jumped out of a plane to illustrate it’s features. In just the past few days, despite the relentless churn of Nexus 5 rumors, Glass has demanded some limelight: floating retail store rumors surfaced, new hardware announcements were made, Glass earbuds unveiled with a full accessory shop, and we even saw cops ticketing people for driving with Glass.

But our favorite announcement has been Google giving each Glass Explorer the opportunity to invite 3 new Explorers to the program. Three Phandroid members are Glass Explorers – Rob Jackson (my Google+), Chris Chavez (Google+), and Steve Albright (Google+) – which makes a total of 9 Google Glass Invites at our disposal.

Nothing would give us more joy than to pass this opportunity along to the people that make Phandroid and Android Forums what they are… YOU! So today, we’re announcing that all 9 of these invites will be given away in what we’re calling “The Great American Glass Contest”.

The Great American Glass Contest

Starting today, we’ll post a contest every day for 9 straight days, updating the status of each contest as we go. Some contests may be completely random, others may require creativity. Some contests may be “first to post”, others may allow multiple entries for several days. The general schedule is below, but as usual, checking into Phandroid every day provides you the best chance at winning (and succeeding in life).

  • Day 1: Nexus 5 Forum Frenzy (Contest open through Nov 4th)
  • Day 2: Photoshop contest
  • Day 3: Rafflecopter #1
  • Day 4: #GlassPhan contest
  • Day 5: Rafflecopter #2
  • Day 6: Developer Appreciation Contests
  • Day 7: On your mark. Get set…
  • Day 8: Mystery Word Hunt
  • Day 9: AF Staff Appreciation

Day 1 Contest: Nexus 5 Forum Frenzy

  • Visit Android Forums and if you haven’t already, sign up for a free account
  • Head over to our Nexus 5 Forum
  • Engage in conversation, making at least 5 meaningful posts in the Nexus 5 Forum (Ex: “Thanks” and “I agree” do not count as posts)
  • At least one of these posts must be a New Thread. (If you’re already signed up and logged in you can create a new thread by clicking here.)
  • We’ll look at the Top 10 threads based on internal metrics (pageviews, likes, thanks, G+, etc…) and choose one winner at random from this pool of finalists
  • Entry requirements must be met by November 4th, 2013 at 11:59PM Eastern
  • Winner will be announced on November 5th, 2013 on Phandroid.com
  • Winner will be contacted through the e-mail address provided during forum registration
  • Winner may NOT provide an alternate e-mail address to submit for Google Glass invite unless otherwise noted or agreed upon by Phandroid staff

Runtastic Story Running and Libra fitness scale unveiled
Oct 31st 2013, 14:25, by Robert Nelson

Runtastic has returned with another set of app updates. This latest touches on the free and pro (paid) versions of the regular Runtastic app and is arriving as something called Story Running. We are seeing this touted as being both just for you and as a new way to run. More to the point, Story Running appears to be along the lines of audiobook listening.

runtastic-story-running-540

Think of running to a story, or sort of guided tour. A visit to the Runtastic website breaks down four of the available listening options. These include stories ranging from adventure and motivation to fantasy and travel. Looking at the adventure as an example and we find one called “The Carrier of Truth, Beyond the Walls of Alcatraz.” This one is a 38-minute story and is arriving with the following in terms of a summary.

“A key, a moment of carelessness, a glimmer of hope. Maybe his only hope. Was it coincidence or destiny? His steps are echoing in the tunnel, suddenly, the noise of dogs barking. Are they at his heels already?”

Anyway, that being said, this new Story Running option can be found in the Runtastic apps as of today. As mentioned, both the free and pro versions have been updated and both can be found in the Play Store. Story Running also has full integration with the Workout mode. Additionally, Pebble and Google+ Sign-In support has also been to the pro version of the app.

RUNTASTIC LIBRA SCALE

Aside from the mobile apps, the folks at Runtastic also have some news on a scale. Specifically, the Libra Scale. This is available for purchase (through Amazon) beginning today and will allow the user to measure eight different items. These include weight and body fat as well as goals, muscle mass, Body Mass Index, body water content, calorie calculation and bone mass.

Along with being able to track eight items, each scale can also track data for eight users. The one catch with the scale, for now the device sync is limited to those with an iPhone. Otherwise, the news of Story Running and the Libra Scale come with word of Runtastic cresting the 50 million download milestone.

Nexus 5 image leak reveals the inner workings
Oct 31st 2013, 13:34, by Robert Nelson

October 31 has arrived and while we have yet to hear anything from Google on the Nexus 5, that doesn’t mean the leaks will be quieting down any. In fact, some new images have recently surfaced. And nicely, this time around we are getting some crisp, clear high-resolution shots to gawk at. These pics are of the internals and have been shared by the folks at FanaticFone.

IMG_7374

Given the frequency of leaks, we are unfortunately not getting any new details with this set of images, but thinking on the bright side — these have offered some further confirmation. For example, the display was shown to measure in at 4.95-inches. And as those earlier leaks have show, that should be Full HD in resolution.

The leaked images have often shown the camera lens sitting on the back of the handset. Specifically, on the top corner of the handset. This time around we are getting a look at the lens without the back cover in place. Nothing new in terms of details, we are still expecting the camera to be 8 megapixel with optical image stabilization. And while we were not expecting a huge camera lens, the actual hardware does appear small as compared to how it looks with the back cover.

IMG_7389

Some of the other pics show the battery, which again was shown to be 2300 mAh. We mentioned this bit yesterday, but it seems the 3000 mAh battery option has all been proven false. That appears to have been nothing more than a case of wishful thinking, but sometimes, that is how the rumors go. Otherwise, there are also some shots (seen in the gallery below) showing the speaker grill on the bottom and the earpiece on the top.

With that, while Google has yet to offer any news of the Nexus 5 release, that could still be a case of it being early on the west coast. Maybe the folks at Google just aren’t up and moving yet. Then again, that could be similar to the 3000 mAh battery — a case of wishful thinking. Finally, to recite the previous rumors, Google is expected to announce the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 Kit Kat today with delivery starting tomorrow, November 1.
