Posted: 08 Feb 2012 02:36 AM PST  We received information that Google has just hired Apple's former Senior Director for product integrity, Simon Prakash. While both Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt may have had a 'no poaching' agreement in the past, it seems like this is no longer in effect. This got us thinking if this will spark another series of patent issues and what-not. Prakash was with Apple for 8 years and was recently the head for ensuring quality control for all Apple products. As of this writing, there is no news as to what Prakash's new title will be, or if he will ever be working on Android related tasks. We heard Google assigned him to work on a 'secret project.' Does this have something to do with the mysterious device they recently signed up for at the FCC? But our source believes that this 'secret project' will be operated by Sergey Brin, Google's co-founder, who has also worked on multiple secret projects for the company. Perhaps Apple will realize that they have lost a great man, considering that they have been well known for their product quality. But with Prakash's transfer to Google, we hope for better things to come! And going back to that 'no poaching' agreement, the Department of Justice is currently investigating the two companies. Rumor as it, Angry Birds will be collaborating with KISS—yes, the metal band KISS. Although nothing's been finalized yet, THE Gene Simmons (KISS's frontman) supposedly spilled the beans about this possible tandem. So where will KISS be making an appearance on the highly popular game? Well, it seems like the faces of this new Angry Birds version will be painted with KISS members. Posted: 07 Feb 2012 11:14 PM PST  I bet if you just hang out at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) all day long, you'll discover who the latest to get a patent is. In most recent stories, Google is the latest to ask the FCC for permission. However, they have not disclosed what this mysterious 'entertainment device' is. All we know is that they got permission to use it in the four major US cities over the next 6 months. This got everyone pretty excited! The device was described as equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. According to GigaOm (who discovered the FCC application), Google submitted the request back in December. As of the moment, there are unclear details about the device. This is why people have their own assumptions on whether it could be an Android or a Google TV device. But after reading the description of the device, it looks like this mysterious device will take video content straight from the internet and will distribute it across several connected devices. As experts have assumed, this would lessen strain on current broadband internet connections. Because it is such a mystery, we couldn't help but snoop around as to what this device may be. As such, a number of theories have been generated—including an extension of Android @ Home, which was unveiled at Google IO 2011. Another theory is that it is the Project Tungsten, which was only demonstrated as a central, connected device running on Android OS. At the time of its demonstration, Project Tungsten was merely a prototype. So maybe this is the real thing? All we know, at this moment, is that Google is currently testing over 250 of these entertainment devices in various locations such as New York City, Massachusetts, and Los Angeles. This video describes how UCC will simplify each user's work experience, as well as prepare them for a future which is more secure. While watching the clip, it is still hard to tell if there's anything new we will be seeing from Verizon. From the looks of it, Big Red only seemed to term wireless unity as 'UCC.' Prior to Verizon's UCC, other platforms have already made its features available—including cloud based computing and storage, email, chat, and video conferencing. But compared to Verizon, other carriers did not make up a term for it. However, they still offer similar, if not the same, services that UCC does. The only edge Verizon has over others is that they have a 4G LTE connection. Thanks to this LTE network, Verizon gets to do things faster and more efficiently. This is what keeps its customers pleased. But with a little research, you can also find other carriers who are capable of this efficiency. Don't you agree? What network are you using? Posted: 07 Feb 2012 03:21 PM PST  So you remember that Android 2.3.6 update to the Samsung Infuse 4G that was released early then pulled then officially went out again late last week? Well it’s been put on hold, temporary. According to an answer in Samsung’s Support forums, things didn’t go quite as planned.We currently have put a hold on the update. Samsung and AT&T are aware of the issue with the Infuse 4G Update and are developing a fix.AT&T has confirmed that the update is indeed on hold and that “we are working with Samsung to get this resolved as quickly as we can”. For everyone still stuck on froyo, hang on a tastier treat is coming very soon. Yeah this is the bad part about Android, you wait for ever for the update then it gets pulled or put on “hold”. We’ve seen this with a few devices, what we need is Google to update all Android devices during a length of a week or so. Have to give a big thanks to the guys over at The Gen for hooking us up with a review unit that we will be giving away. It is basically a charger unlike something you’ve ever seen before, in the world of Android. It’s best used as a desk charger, since Andru stands on the plug, so you could have him standing on your desk and make all your co-workers jealous. As you can see in the picture above I used my old HTC Sensation 4G as the guinea pig, and it works on my Droid Bionic as well as my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. The phone will most likely appear in Europe next, and hopefully on a US carrier in the near future. We at Talk Android were mightily impressed when we previewed the Ascend P1 S at CES 2012. The world’s thinnest smartphone packs a ton into its casing, including a 1.5Ghz dual-core OMAP 4460 processor, 4.3 inch Super AMOLED screen, 1GB of RAM and an 8MP rear camera. It should be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. All that, and it’s only 6.68mm thick. Huawei has vowed to best their already incredible Ascend P1 S handset with the “Diamond Series“. Posted: 07 Feb 2012 12:52 PM PST  Google’s new bouncer-service that was announced last week is supposed to have dropped the number of malware apps in the Android Market by about 40% already. While that is a great number the Bouncer service isn’t perfect and it probably is the beginning to one of many back and forth battles between the Search Giant and malicious hackers in the making. However, it appears that hackers may have already found a work around to this service. According to North Carolina State University professor Xuxian Jiang, he and his team have discovered a new malware variant that pulls off a pretty sneaky maneuver. The malware contains no malicious code when it’s first installed on a device. By doing this it evades scans or permission requests that could pick up on its intentions in the first place. Here’s the trick. After it’s downloaded the app is then able to download new code from a remote server and it can hide this in the data transfer from the phone’s communications. Part of the code downloaded in the exploit is known as “Gingerbreak.” Yes this is the same Gingerbreak that is used to gain root access on some Android 2.3 devices. This is used to gain full access to the device as root access does, allowing hackers, criminals and whoever else use of any of the phone’s functions whenever. This includes calling paid numbers, reading data, listening through the microphone or installing other malicious apps. Jiang’s team was able to find DroidLive secretly installed. This exploit profits by sending text messages to paid phone numbers. Known as “privilege escalation” this exploit is quite difficult to achieve on Apple’s more restrictive OS as they only allow approved code to run on their devices. Android devices however have already seen these exploits demonstrated in a research atmosphere by security researcher Jon Oberheide, who was able to previously hide the ability to download this malicious code in two proof-of-concept Android applications. One impersonated a Twilight movie photo app and another was disguised as an Angry Birds “sequel.” Thanks to this research, Android privilege-escalation has been proven to be more than theoretical. According to Jiang, “Jon had just showed this was possible.” He continued by saying ” This is the first actual malware that we found in the wild that uses this technique.” Jiang calls the new exploit “Rootsmart,” based on the prototype “Rootstrap” made by Oberheide combined with “com.google.android.smart” used by malware authors. Rootsmart itself isn't much of a threat to American Android users. In its current form, it doesn't package itself as anything a user might be tempted to download, and it wasn't found in the official Android Market, only on a Chinese app download site. However these apps could potentially evade the bouncer service. Given that the program scans all apps uploaded to the market for known malware that’s then simulated as running, it may get a free pass as Rootsmart doesn’t initially contain malware. This means the app could then wait out the Bouncer wait period before malicious code is downloaded. Whether or not the Android Market scans would catch this is untested. When Forbes contacted Google for comment, a spokesperson pointed out that Rootsmart hasn’t been found in the official Market and right now falls outside of the bouncer’s zone of protection. But Jiang believes that a version could be uploaded to the Android Market that could evade the malware filter. He said: "At the very least, this would cause some challenges for a Bouncer-like system. There have been rumors for a few weeks on just what Verizon had up its sleeve for the Motorola handset. There is some good stuff packed into this update, including more stability. The black screen lockups, camera lockups, idle resets and multimedia dock lockups should be a thing of the past. The update will add Amazon MP3 and the VCAST App Store. Also on the list of improvements are data, HDMI and Bluetooth connectivity. The battery life should also be enhanced. Unfortunately, this update won’t be bringing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the Bionic. We’ll let you know here at Talk Android when that update happens. Being that Samsung has said we would not see the device at MWC in Spain, and we can now cross the France theory off the list too. It’s looking more and more likely that Samsung may be targeting a launch closer to the iPhone 5 unveiling, which reports suggest will appear at this years WWDC at the beginning of June. Also, this would just barely fall in line with Samsung’s statement about unveiling the device within the first half of the year. It looks like we may just have to wait it out a bit longer than we hopped. The Galaxy S III is definitely going to be worth the wait, though. It is said to be thinner than its predecessor at roughly 7mm thin, internally waterproofed, sport a Super AMOLED Plus display, rock a quad-core processor, and possibly even a 12MP camera. Couple that with a proposed HDMI output and you got one of the hottest, if not the hottest, phones on the market.
