Back in early September, Microsoft announced it was buying Nokia's smartphone division in a move that is meant to help Microsoft's solidify its in-house hardware development efforts. For many Nokia fans, this news was pretty upsetting – especially for those of us that dreamed of the day we’d see a Nokia handset running on the power of Android.

Further throwing sand in the wound, it was later revealed that Nokia had been actively developing an Android device in a goal to move beyond just Windows Phone, though Microsoft’s bid obviously changed the company’s plans.

Although we admire former Nokia employee J. Parda's bold efforts with the Nokita project, we think it's time to finally let go the notion of the an Android-powered Nokia future

Is there hope that the deal will end, and that we will still see Android running on Nokia's excellent hardware? Honestly, we'd strongly bet against it at this point. That said, a new project aims to change the course of history by working to outbid Microsoft and bring back the dream of a Android-powered (or even Linux) Nokia handset.

Going by the name "Nokita", the project's goal is to attain enough funds to outbid Microsoft and give Nokia another option. That means they'd have to raise $7.2 billion dollars. While the idea is a bold one, let's be honest: it has very little chance of succeeding.

Sure, Blackberry's buyout deal isn't happening and the company is (sort of) sticking around under a new plan, but the situation is different for Nokia. What's so different? Microsoft, that’s what.

Even if by some crazy turn of events Nokita is able to raise enough money to outbid the original offer, Microsoft could easily turn around and sweeten the deal by offering more. Microsoft has a nearly infinite stream of cash, and will likely stop at nothing to make Nokia theirs.

Making the idea even more impossible is the fact that Nokita only has two weeks left to accomplish it’s goal, as the Nokia board is expected to finalize the purchase by November 19th.

Although we admire former Nokia employee J. Parda's bold efforts with the Nokita project, we think it's time to finally let go the notion of the an Android-powered Nokia future. Nokia simply bet on the wrong horse. It’s a sad to see a once-amazing company effectively go the way of the dinosaur, but sometimes that’s just the way of the world.

Amazon thanks the FAA, reduces price of 7-inch Kindle Fire HD and HDX to celebrate

One day only, Amazon takes 15% off the latest 7-inch Kindle Fires to celebrate FAA decision

In honor of the FAA's landmark decision to allow the use of most electronic devices during all stages of flight, Amazon is throwing a one day sale on the 7 inch Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX. The sale is limited to the U.S, and only one discount per customer, but entering the code "ThnksFAA" at checkout will net you 15% off one of the tablets, or a regular Kindle if you'd prefer.

That takes the Kindle Fire HD 7-inch down to $118, and the similarly sized HDX down to $195. Modest savings, but never to be sneered at, especially with the holidays just around the corner. So, if you've been holding out, now might be the time to pull the trigger. Head on over to Amazon, and let us know which one you pick up if you're buying.

[Deal] Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX now 15% off for today only at Amazon

Amazon_Kindle_Sale_FAA

You generally don’t need a reason to slash prices, but the recent FAA ruling allowing the use of personal electronics during takeoff and landing has inspired Amazon to drop the Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Fire HDX by 15% for today only.

The Kindle Fire HD is normally $139, but it’s $118 after the discount. If you would rather grab the HDX, it’s priced at $195, a $34 savings. You can even grab the basic Kindle for $59. I still say the Nexus 7 is the best all around tablet in regards to price, but these Kindles are perfect for Grandma and Grandpa. Again, this is only good for today, and be sure to enter promo code ThnksFAA at checkout.

Order: Kindle / Kindle Fire HD / Kindle Fire HDX

New chatter says 12.2inch Galaxy tablet goes into production this year
Nov 4th 2013, 15:39, by Scott Webster

New chatter surfacing this morning suggest Samsung is ready to put the rumored 12.2-inch Galaxy tablet into production later this year. The tablet has tossed about the rumor mill for the better part of last few months with word of a extra large Tab or Note experience on the horizon. Details are alleged to include a display resolution of 2560 x 1600; however, the rest of the specs are shrouded in mystery.

Given word an SM-P900 and SM-P905 model number gloating about, there’s a chance we could be looking at any number of scenarios: a Wi-Fi and 4G version, regional models, or something else. It’s possible that Samsung might employ the 12.2-inch display size for multiple models, including both a Tab and a Note.

Switching launchers with Android 4.4's new 'Home' setting
Nov 4th 2013, 15:33, by Alex Dobie

KitKat makes it easier to swap or uninstall custom launchers

Many of us enjoy using custom home screen launchers on our Android phones, but the process of switching between them has never been entirely foolproof. That's changed in the latest Android 4.4 KitKat, which introduces a new top-level menu in the Settings app allowing you to select your default launcher. That means you don't have to traipse into the Apps menu, find your custom launcher, then clear its defaults to change back. The new Home menu also gives you an easy way to uninstall custom launchers, by pressing the trash icon next to it.

Check out our video above for a quick walkthrough on the Nexus 5.
