Jet Set Radio coming to Android later this summer Posted: 21 Jul 2012 02:08 PM PDT Gamers who remember the Sega Dreamcast may be familiar with Jet Set Radio. The game offered players the opportunity to skate around a virtual world with the goal of graffiti "tagging" different locations. Jet Set Radio was regarded as one of the top titles for the Dreamcast platform with a vibrant universe of cel-shaded graphics and a great soundtrack. Anyone who was a fan of the game will be glad to know that Sega has announced plans to release a new version of the game later this summer that will run on Android devices. It sounds like it will be a faithful port of the old classic with only some minor tweaks or additions to allow for new technologies such as the use of cell phone pictures in game. With the improved capabilities of today's HD devices, the graphics should be stunning. No release date or pricing information is available. Mysterious Archos LUDOG10 device shows up in GLBenchmark Posted: 21 Jul 2012 11:26 AM PDT Foreign website Notebook Italia readers reported spotting an entry on GLBenchmark for a new Archos device dubbed the LUDOG10. The device's listing includes all kinds of interesting information. The resolution for the device is listed as 1920 x 1008. Is this a typo and should have been "1080" which is a much more common size? That seems likely and would suggest a 1080p HD screen. The listing also indicates the device will have Texas Instrument's OMAP 4470 cpu which includes a PowerVR SGX554 for gpu duties. Reportedly running at 1.5GHz, this appears to be the first device to surface in GLBenchmark with this chipset. The Archos unit is listed as running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Much of the speculation regarding the device is that it is a gaming console. Jelly Bean Updates Rolling Out for Five More Carriers Around the World Posted: 21 Jul 2012 10:51 AM PDT Earlier this week Jelly Bean had begun appearing on Nexus S devices in Pakistan. Today on the Nexus Google+ account, they announced that Jelly Bean is currently being released to customers on at least five different carriers around the world, presumably, this includes the unlocked GSM models too. Here’s the official announcement: We’ve started rolling out Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, to Nexus S phones on a number of carriers including T-Mobile, H3G, O2, Rogers as well as Vodafone in most countries, with more to come. Samsung Says “Save The Date” For Next US Galaxy Device On August 15th Posted: 21 Jul 2012 12:28 AM PDT   Samsung is sending out Save the Date emails to the press about a big Galaxy announcement on August 15th. The email is pretty direct about announcing a new Galaxy device, but totally mum on what that device may be.  ”Please join Samsung Electronics America for a major announcement and unveiling of the newest Galaxy device.“ See what I mean? Ok, so it could possibly be the Galaxy S Blaze Q, but our money is on the Galaxy Note 10.1, the S-Pen enabled tablet we caught our first glimpse of at Mobile World Congress in February. While the Galaxy Note 2 is also a possibility, the more believable rumor has that being unveiled at IFA 2012. What do you hope to see? Verizon Galaxy S III To Receive Update to VRLG1, Removes Unified Search and Updates Kernel Posted: 20 Jul 2012 08:55 PM PDT If you are a Verizon subscriber and own a Samsung Galaxy S III, you may be receiving an update soon. This is meant to update the kernel and to dumb down the search capabilities of the device. As we have already seen, Samsung has been pushing the same update to both the Sprint and AT&T Galaxy S III. When we talk about “dumbing down search capabilities” this is what you should expect. Currently, when you search via the search bar, it returns results from the web, apps, contacts, etc. all in a unified manner. However, with the current Apple Vs. Samsung debacle, search results will be limited to the web with no localized results. If you are having any issues with your S III and get a replacement, your new device will already have been updated to I535VRLG1. The same is expected for those who go out and purchase one today. Google Acquires the Popular iOS E-Mail Client Sparrow Posted: 20 Jul 2012 06:01 PM PDT Google’s G-mail app on Android is by far the best G-mail experience you can get on any mobile device. Sadly, the same can’t be said about Androids stock e-mail client. It seems as if that may change as Google has officially acquired Sparrow. If you’re not familiar with Sparrow, it’s arguably the most popular and best e-mail client available for iOS and Mac. Thus, I’m sure it would be welcomed with open arms by Android users if Google ever decides to incorporate it into their OS. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update begins rolling out to Nexus S Posted: 20 Jul 2012 05:25 PM PDT After being left to wonder if Android 4.1 Jelly Bean would actually come to the Nexus S, it seems that Google has begun the roll out. Unfortunately, for the moment it seems that only some carriers are getting the update, so some Nexus S owners may be left waiting for a while. In any case, Google announced via the Nexus Twitter account today that the update roll out has started, so at least we know that it’s underway. “We’ve started rolling out Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, to Nexus S phones on a number of carriers with more to come. Enjoy!” the tweet reads. Some Nexus S owners may have received the update as early as last night, but now that it’s actually be confirmed by Google, more and more Nexus S owners should be getting OTA notifications soon. Ubergizmo says that the list of carriers includes T-Mobile, H3G, 02, Rogers, and Vodafone (in most countries), so if you use one of those carriers, keep an eye out for that notification! The Nexus S is just the second smartphone to receive the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, with the Galaxy Nexus being the first to receive it. HTC has confirmed that its One Series phones will also be getting the update, but unfortunately, didn’t get very specific as to when. Jet Set Radio HD announced for Android Posted: 20 Jul 2012 02:34 PM PDT Earlier this year, Sega announced that an HD remake of its classic Dreamcast game Jet Set Radio was in the works for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and PS Vita. As if that weren’t already enough platforms, Sega revealed today that the HD port will also be coming to Android. Sadly, we still don’t have a release date for Jet Set Radio HD, so the knowledge that it’s coming to Android will have to be good enough for now. Though we’re a bit concerned that Jet Set Radio HD will be a little difficult to control on a touchscreen, we’re excited nonetheless. Sega says that the mobile version of Jet Set Radio HD allows you to make in-game graffiti out of the pictures you take with the camera on your device, so the Android version will be getting some functionality that other versions lack. The Dreamcast, as many of you are already aware, is held in high regard by many gamers out there, and when talking about their favorite Dreamcast titles, gamers usually place Jet Set Radio near the top of the list. A lot of us have some pretty fond memories with our Dreamcasts and copies of Jet Set Radio (known as Jet Grind Radio in North America), so if Sega can deliver with this HD remake, we’re all in for a treat. Samsung to make ‘major’ Galaxy announcement next month Posted: 20 Jul 2012 01:21 PM PDT Samsung has informed everyone that it’s planning to make a major Galaxy-related announcement on August 15. Naturally, we don’t know what this announcement is – that would take all the fun out of it – but our friends at SlashGear are guessing that it has something to do with the Galaxy Tab or the Galaxy Note. Since Samsung just released the Galaxy S III in May, we’re tempted to agree. Of course, Samsung’s announcement could be smartphone-related, but with the Galaxy S III currently selling like mad, we’re thinking that Samsung would like to give it at least a little more time to soak up the spotlight. With that in mind, it seems pretty likely that Samsung will announce the next Galaxy Tab or Galaxy Note when it takes the stage next month. Even though we think we have an idea of what Samsung is plotting, don’t forget about the possibility of Samsung announcing something entirely brand new and surprising us all. After all, if Samsung were planning to reveal a new device with Galaxy branding, it makes sense that the company would want to tease the announcement before hand. At the end of the day, however, all of this speculation is simply that, and we won’t know what Samsung has planned until August 15. Google acquires Sparrow for Gmail mobile reboot Posted: 20 Jul 2012 12:07 PM PDT Google has acquired Sparrow, a company that makes a popular email client for Mac and iOS. Details on the acquisition are pretty light at this moment, but it seems that Google will use Sparrow’s talents to make a better Gmail app for smartphones, tablets, and Mac. This means that Sparrow will likely be helping Google create a more worthwhile Gmail client for Android, so this is something to keep an eye on. Neither Google nor Sparrow have revealed how much Google paid in the acquisition deal. In a statement today, Sparrow said that it will be joining the Gmail team to “accomplish a bigger vision.” “We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience,” the company said. “Now we're joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.” Sparrow’s work with Google appears to ramping up pretty quickly here, as Sparrow says that while it will continue to offer its current apps and provide support to its users, it won’t be adding any new features to its existing products. As stated above, it’s difficult to tell what Sparrow will be doing on the Gmail team, but you can bet that it won’t be long before Google reveals its plans. The Dark Knight Rises game glides onto Google Play Store Posted: 20 Jul 2012 11:39 AM PDT If you’re one of the many who can’t seem to get enough Batman, then you’ll be pleased to know that Gameloft‘s The Dark Knight Rises tie-in game is available now on the Google Play Store. As we told you a few days back, the game looks pretty great, and actually seems to be one of the few movie tie-in games that’s worth your time. It may be worth a purchase for that reason alone, but we imagine the solid graphics and familiar gameplay will help to further sway you. The game appears to have a lot in common with Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham City on consoles and PC. The fighting mechanics are very similar to those found in the Arkham series, with time even slowing down as you string your combos together. Likewise, the open world exploration found in Batman: Arkham City is present in The Dark Knight Rises as well, so if you’re in the mood for something in the vein of Arkham City or Arkham Asylum, you really can’t go wrong with The Dark Knight Rises. You can download the game now from the Google Play Store, and like most big Gameloft games, it costs $6.99. That may seem like a lot to pay for a mobile game, but the quality appears to be there, so at least you won’t be paying for a piece of garbage. You may have to clear some space on your device before downloading, however, as the APK weighs in at 1.8GB and an additional data download of 1.8GB is required after that. Still, if you’ve got the space and you don’t mind dropping $7, it looks like The Dark Knight Rises will provide you with the perfect companion game to the well-reviewed movie.
