| Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies hitting Android on July 25? Posted: 21 Jul 2012 03:40 PM PDT Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is a mobile game available on iOS devices so far, although we have good news for Android smartphone and tablet owners who enjoy hacking, slashing and shooting any zombie that moves around, virtually speaking naturally. The game is apparently headed to Google Play and although availability dates are not official at this time, it would appear the game will be launched in just a few days on July 25. How do we know this? The folks over at XperiaGamer have uncovered a blog post on the official Call of Duty website that presents the Android Field Manual of Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies. While the post in question has been taken down for the time being, it would seem that it's supposed to be republished on July 25, which is when we'll expect the game to be released. Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies will feature 50 levels and if that’s not enough it will also come with multiplayer support – local, via Bluetooth, or online. The game sells for $6.99 in the App Store, so we'd expect a similar price for the Android version. Anyone excited? Or are you playing Dead Trigger instead? Such is the case with the Galaxy S3, which is available in a special Olympic Games edition to Taiwanese Android fans. While we're looking at the same Galaxy S3 device – nothing inside the phone will change – you'll appreciate the UK-based Galaxy S3 cases and the accessories you'll find in the box. Moreover, if you don't like that much the available Galaxy S3 colors – Marble White, Pebble Blue and Garnet Red (in certain markets) – then you'll certainly favor these special case skins designed for the Olympic games. There are two versions available, one showing the Union Jack while the other features the royal guard soldier. | Brace yourselves, Verizon Galaxy S3 owners, “dumbed down” search update is imminent Posted: 21 Jul 2012 11:33 AM PDT The expected update has finally come to Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S3. Following the dumbing down of the search feature on AT&T's and Sprint's variant of the phone – where you can only get search results from the web and nothing from internally placed apps, contacts, multimedia files and others – Big Red is the third major carrier to receive the not so desirable software update. There's no report yet that the update has been widely rolled out over-the-air (OTA) to the handset, but the new Galaxy S3 firmware for Verizon has already been spotted. If you, by chance, have had to replace your phone recently, you will likely receive a replacement Galaxy S3 running the new I535VRLG1 firmware, which comes with a new kernel and the dumbed down search feature among other things. Samsung recently confirmed that it is taking the precautionary measure of removing universal search to ensure that the Galaxy S3 won't be an easy injunction target for Apple and its lawyers in the USA. It would be quite a blow to have the flagship phone suffer the same sales ban fate as the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. With the imminent firmware update that will cripple the search function on Verizon's Galaxy S3, this leaves T-Mobile as the last standing carrier whose variant still has the universal search feature intact. | Google Nexus 7 sold out after “incredible demand” – where to buy the Jelly Bean tablet from? Posted: 21 Jul 2012 11:25 AM PDT The Google Nexus 7 Jelly Bean tablet has been officially announced at this year's Google I/O edition, with Google taking pre-orders on the same day it unveiled the device in late June. By mid-July, the company partnered up with various electronics retailers that have also started taking pre-orders for the device. The Nexus 7 started shipping last Friday, with customers not happy to see some of those retailers beat Google when it came to shipping pre-orders. Since then, we reported that various companies finished their first Nexus 7 allotments on the first days of sales, but the device continued to be available from Google's own Google Play store. In the mean time, it looks like the tablet is sold out with major retailers, according to ZDNet. Not to mention that after performing a quick check on Google Play you'll see that the 8GB version ships in 3-5 days while the 16GB model will reach your home in 3-4 weeks. So where should you buy a Nexus 7 tablet now? | Dexter the Game 2 will bring everyone’s favorite serial killer to Android this fall Posted: 21 Jul 2012 11:01 AM PDT Movies and television have changed a great deal in the past decade or so, making the thin line between good and evil gradually diminish, or, in some cases, disappear altogether. That's the case of Showtimes' hit series "Dexter", where a serial killer/vigilante becomes the beloved hero of a crime-riddled Miami. Dexter Morgan is a killer of killers, and one capable of fatherly and brotherly love, but we still can't say that we anticipated his booming popularity over the past six years. However, he is one of TV's most loved characters, which is why we are ecstatic to welcome him into the Android gaming world as well. Dexter the Game 2 will be unleashed upon us this fall and will hit Android, iOS and PC for yet to be announced prices. Details on the game are a bit hazy at this time, but we do have an official press release and a trailer to sketch a picture of what awaits us. The game is developed by Ecko Code in close collaboration with Showtime and it has a few ingredients that will make it irresistible to the TV show's fans, but not only to them. First off, the plot. Fortunately, unlike the series, the game will only concentrate on Dexter, his investigation of killers and slimy guys of all sorts, and his unorthodox ways of dealing with them and bring them to justice. In other words, it's all about finding the bad guy, putting him to sleep, then starting all over again with a fresh new a-hole. Simple, yet so cool! The game's producers also promise to have unlimited gameplay at your disposal, meaning that you'll never end up with no killers to hunt down. That sounds just a bit too good to be true, but if it is, it's super! Finally, what personally makes me want this game really, really bad is Michael C. Hall's (aka Dexter Morgan)'s involvement in the project. It seems that he has been a "close collaborator" of the game's developers from the starting point, and he will also voice his own character. However, the trailer looks horrible, at least the parts with actual gameplay. To say that the graphics look outdated would be a huge understatement. The scene where Dexter is running (0:15 in the YouTube video) is particularly grueling and offers a very dark preview into what could be a very early '90s-looking arcade game (in the bad, bad sense of the word). I don't want to end this article on a very dark note, especially given the fact that I'm a huge fan of Dexter's and his Dark Passenger, so fingers crossed for the developers to change something in the graphics by the time of the game's release. | Signal drop fix for Xperia U coming in early August, ICS to follow soon after? Posted: 21 Jul 2012 09:55 AM PDT Sony Xperia U owners have something that’s troubling their minds other than waiting for the promised Ice Cream Sandwich treat for the phone, as the device is plagued with a glitch that causes problems like signal drop and network disconnect. Luckily, the problems have been identified and a software fix will be released soon – apparently these issues also affect other Xperia handsets, such as the Xperia P, Xperia Sola and Xperia Go. According to a staff member from the Sony Mobile forum, a new firmware for the Xperia U will be rolled out starting with early August. It'll still be Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread mind you, but least it'll be a more stable version. As for the Android 4.0 ICS update for the Xperia U, Sony Mobile Italia has posted some details on its Facebook page. Answering questions about the ICS roll out for the phone, the team said that the ice cream treat will be handed out a bit later in August, but only after Sony's done with bringing ICS to Xperia P. If you remember, this is the same source that provided information about Xperia P's ICS update. You may want to refrain from getting too overly excited yet, though. The official Sony Mobile support forum said that ICS for the Xperia U is scheduled to come "a little later in Q3," which indicates that a September roll out is a more plausible date than an August one. | Mysterious Archos Ludo G10 device spotted at GLBenchmark, to be an ICS-powered gaming console? Posted: 21 Jul 2012 09:46 AM PDT Archos might not exactly be a name to be reckoned with in the high-end sector of the tablet market, but the French-based consumer electronics company has most likely caught your eye lately with some more than decent budget-friendly entry-level and mid-range slates. The 80 G9/101 G9 duo has been in the headlines back in March with some hailed early ICS upgrades, while the unbelievably affordable 10-inch 97 Carbon was only unveiled a few days ago and looks like a gadget set to draw the attention of tech users on a budget. After targeting only certain kind of users, it was only natural to see Archos putting up a fight in a more "heated" niche as well. That fight might come from a little device known right now only by a Ludo G10 codename, which, although we have no idea exactly what it is, we can bet it will be big. The Ludo G10 has been spotted over at GL Benchmark by the good guys from NotebookItalia and it is set to come with a high-resolution screen and a very snappy processor. The display sported by the G10 is listed in the benchmark tests with a resolution of 1920 x 1008 pixels, which doesn't make much sense, but that's probably only a spelling error and we will be actually dealing with a more common 1920 x 1080 pix screen. As far as the future G10's processor goes, that might itself be something special. Although it's not confirmed by the information in the listing, it's very possible for the gadget to come powered by a spanking new dual-core TI OMAP 4470 chipset that's not yet released. But it should see the light of day sometime in Q4 2012, clocked at 1.8 GHz and housing an absolutely stunning PowerVR SGX554 graphics processor unit (GPU). In terms of software, the Ludo G10 will come with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, which is more than satisfying right now, but it might actually not be that hot in, say, three months. There's one more piece of information rumored about the G10 and we saved it for last for a good reason – it's the juiciest. It seems that Archos will not be looking to pit this new product against other high-end tablets around, but market it as one of the first ever Android-based video gaming consoles. That's one way to make your name known to a wider audience, but the competition might not be as light as you imagine. Archos will have to deal with the Ouya, a very intriguing console expected to come with an impressive quality-price ratio. | LG LS860 Cayenne goes full frontal in pictures, new Motion 4G might be MetroPCS- and AT&T-bound Posted: 21 Jul 2012 09:35 AM PDT We've reported on LG's upcoming slider phone, the LS860, since late May. Little by little, details of the phone, which is also known as Cayenne, and its specs emerged. The only thing missing seems to be pictures of the handset out in the open – though not like this one right here, where only the back part is visible. Thanks to EV Leaks, we are now treated to a better view of the LG Cayenne. The LG Cayenne turns out to be quite the looker, as it sports enough curves not to make it too boxy-looking. The front part features what looks like three capacitive buttons, front camera, an LED notification light, and probably proximity and light sensors. Sadly, there's no picture of the phone's QWERTY keyboard in action. As a refresher, the LG LS860 Cayenne will come with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 4-inch WVGA IPS display, 8GB onboard storage, 1GB RAM, 5MP rear camera, VGA front-facing camera, NFC, LTE, 1,700mAh battery, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a 5-row slideout keyboard. The phone was last rumored to come to Sprint. The leak has also brought another LG phone to the surface, the Motion 4G MS770. The specs are yet to be confirmed, but it is believed to boast a qHD display of unknown size, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 5MP rear shooter, LTE radio, and ICS. While the Motion 4G will be heading to MetroPCS, an AT&T variant of the phone is apparently being planned as well – where it will be called as the LG P870. | Many rumors, very few confirmations. What devices will get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean? Posted: 21 Jul 2012 08:13 AM PDT Almost a month has passed after the formal introduction of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The new operating system's source code has itself been released a couple of weeks back, so it's only natural for users to expect official Jelly Bean updates to be flowing, right? However, as recent history has sadly shown us, the road from an OS update becoming open source to it actually hitting the most popular devices around is a very bumpy one. So it's no wonder that we still (officially) know very little about the Jelly Bean upgrade timeframes. The only three devices that are already running Android 4.1 are the unlocked Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 7 tablet, and now the Nexus S. The list of gadgets officially getting JB "sometime soon" is rather flimsy itself. However, the rumors are piling up, confusing many users who might think they are entitled to get Jelly Bean just weeks after the OS' release. Confused? Angry? Frustrated? I'm sure that most of you feel at least one of those feelings, which is why we'll try to throw a bit of light on the Jelly Bean update darkness below. Devices officially confirmed to get Jelly Bean
If we were to take bets a month ago on what would be the first confirmed devices for Android 4.1 updates, I am absolutely certain that no one would have ever guessed this "formation". It's a bit crazy to see those "raggedy" Transformer, Slider and Xoom tablets next to the fresh high-end One X and XL smartphones on the list. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that the Transformer Pads will be updated to Jelly Bean, but Asus has taken the time to announce something on the matter (albeit not something very definitive). Acer and Samsung, on the other hand, have felt the need to go all secretive on us. As far as HTC goes, we want to take the time and congratulate them once again for being the most straightforward with us. HTC are keeping mum on devices such as the EVO 4G LTE or the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, but they still have three officially confirmed smartphones, which is more than any other OEM around. Before you jump at my throat for not including your favorite device on the above list, I should tell you that I only included some of the gadgets (the most likely ones) that I personally think will get Jelly Bean by the end of the year. There's a strong possibility that the list will be significantly widened, but at the same time it is even more likely that only a few of those phones and tablets will be getting Android 4.1 over the next months, while others, not included on the list, will take the JB software leap. It's almost impossible to try to guess the manufacturers' exact plans, as they systematically refuse to communicate with the media. But, based on rumors and speculations, as well as on how well they have done with ICS updates in the past, I trust the above list to be a fairly exact one. Also, I only included already released devices on the list, with pretty much any gadget launching in the near future with ICS out of the box being guaranteed a JB leap soon after. We've heard speculations that Samsung is very close to roll out JB for the Galaxy S2 and S3, we've also heard something from Toshiba, while Acer's and Sony's plans can be guessed by how fast they have come up with Android 4.0 updates. There's also another very important aspect to be taken into consideration, and that is the phones and tablets' tech specs. We've seen ICS rolling out to several low-end devices over the last month or so, but it's likely that Jelly Bean has higher technical "standards". That said, we wouldn't get our hopes very high for any gadget that falls into the low-end or mid-range category. Whether our speculations will prove accurate or not, it remains to be seen over the next few months, so keep in touch to find out everything about the Jelly Bean upgradeable devices.
