Leaked Staples doc show Galaxy S4 coming to AT&T April 26, T-Mobile and Verizon later

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 03:44 PM PDT

Galaxy S4

The new 5-inch Galaxy S4 to be tentatively available for AT&T on April 26, T-Mobile on May 1, and Verizon on May 30 says leaked Staples training sheet

So far nobody has given a firm date for the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4, but this document from Staples that was leaked to Engadget may hold the answers. Clearly marked as tentative, the sheet says the S4 will hit AT&T on April 26, T-Mobile on May 1, and Verizon on May 30. There is no mention of the Sprint model, and the leaked materials give no pricing for phones sold at Staples.

The S4 brings a larger 5-inch display to the Galaxy S family, and it comes in slightly smaller that its predecessor. With all new internals and updated software and features, it promises to be more than your new phone -- it will be your new "Life Companion"

While we're not so sure we would call a smart phone a life companion, plenty of folks are looking forward to the release of the S4, including all of us here at AC. According to this, we won't have to wait too much longer. With two great new top-tier devices releasing this month on AT&T, it's going to be a tough choice.

AT&T branded HTC One bootloader unlocked via HTC Dev, rooted, CWM recovery installed

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 02:07 PM PDT

AT&T HTC One

Using tools from HTC and existing methods for the international version, the AT&T HTC One has cracked open

Good news for some folks interested in the AT&T version of the HTC One -- the HTC Dev site will unlock your bootloader, and the methods used to root and install ClockWorkMod recovery are the same as the international version.

We mentioned a few days ago that a few people were lucky enough to get their HTC One early from AT&T, and of course that means that people have been working at opening it up. Some have been concerned that AT&T would have the device blocked from using the standard HTC bootloader unlocking tool, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

There are a few things to keep on mind if you plan to try this for yourself as soon as you get your HTC One. This procedure will wipe everything off your phone as part of the bootloader unlock process. Also, the Calculator, Flashlight, Ringtone Trimmer and Sound Recorder apps are deleted in the process. This doesn't sound like a very big deal, but the absence of these apps means the device won't pass a file integrity check and can no longer receive OTA updates.

In any case, this is good news for those waiting on their new HTC One from AT&T, and also like to tinker with things.

Radarscope for Android

We try out a $10 weather application that's way too much app for most of us

Radarscope probably is too much app for you. Let's be perfectly clear about that. (I usually use the screws in my left leg to tell me when the rain's a-comin'; this is way too much app for me, too.) Radar apps are a dime a dozen on Android, and there are some really good ones, available free, or for just a buck or two. Radarscope, on the other hand, is meant for weather professionals -- meteorologists -- or the serious weather nerd.

It costs $10. But it's also really good.

Don't forget your $25 Google Play credit with your Galaxy Note 8 purchase

Note 8 Gogle Play credit

Register your new tablet with Samsung for $25 to spend at any of the Google Play stores

If you already picked up a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, or are considering it, don't forget that Samsung has $25 worth of Google Play credit they want to give you with your purchase. All you need to do is register your new device with Samsung, which is usually a good idea anyway for warranty issues.

Doing so is easy. You'll need the box your Note 8 came in, and have the device powered up and connected to Wifi. Follow the form's instructions and fill in your model, serial number, and MAC address. A few minutes later, you should get a gift code in the Gmail account you specified.

Half the fun of getting a new Android device is shopping at Google Play, and $25 free makes it even better. Click the link below to get started.

Walmart to begin taking Galaxy S 4 preorders on Tuesday

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 03:52 PM PDT

samsung_galaxy_s_4_front_back

If you’ve been itching to preorder the Galaxy S 4, you might get that chance starting this week. According to some internal material for Walmart, preorders for the device start this Tuesday, the 16th. There’s no word on pricing, but it will launch on multiple carriers. Nothing really groundbreaking there, but it’s good to see some dates.

AT&T has already announced the 16 GB version of the device will run $199, while the 32 GB will be $249. I can imagine that pricing will be similar on the other carriers, and in Walmart. I guess we’ll know in the next few weeks, either way.

Rumors of Samsung changing design for Galaxy Note III

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 10:15 AM PDT

samsung_logo_120

When Samsung announced their latest flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S 4, one of the criticisms leveled was that it continued the design philosophy of using plastic for the body of the smartphone. The cacophony surrounding this choice grew so loud that Samsung’s executive vice president for the mobile division even took to offering a defense for Samsung’s choice to use plastic while other manufacturers were opting for materials like aluminum and glass. Sources are now indicating Samsung may respond to that criticism when the next Galaxy Note device, the Samsung Galaxy Note III, is released.

These sources claim an internally produced metal version of the Galaxy S 4 was very popular and well received by those who managed to spend some time with it. However, manufacturing dictates and deadlines precluded the use of metal for the Galaxy S 4. There is some time for Samsung to get everything tooled up for the Galaxy Note III and to produce it using something other than plastic. There are some hints that the shape may change as well to something more in line with the HTC One or other devices that are not so rounded as Samsung’s Galaxy line.

Do you think Samsung will make a move to change from plastic to metal for their top tier lines? Do you think they should?

Tablets continue to grow at an enormous pace, with Samsung and Amazon tablets leading the way

It’s no surprise that tablet growth is apparent worldwide, but a new studies have surfaced giving us an even better indication of tablet popularity. According to Pew Research, one in four Americans own some sort of tablet— while the IDC highlights the worldwide tablet market grew more than 78% year-on-year in 2012. Not surprisingly, Samsung and Amazon tablets lead the way with their own tablets being in the top-five among all tablet manufacturers, followed by other manufacturers such as ASUS and Motorola. Even more astounding is among the top tablets worldwide, 4 of the top 5 tablets and 6 out of the top 10 are smaller tablets, further reaffirming the notion that people certainly love their smaller tablets.

Considering the IDC predicts that 190 million tablets will be shipped in 2013, we probably won’t see a slowdown in tablet growth anytime soon.

NVIDIA releases teaser video showcasing Arma Tactics on Project Shield

Posted: 13 Apr 2013 04:13 PM PDT

It’s been a while since we’d heard about any games based off NVIDIA’s upcoming Project Shield portable gaming console. NVIDIA certainly realized that and took some time to present a teaser video of a special port of Arma Tactics. The teaser video pretty much showcases everything we’ve come to expect from a Project Shield-based game: awesome graphics, fluid visuals, smooth effects, dynamic shadows and intuitive controls. Yeah… it’s mouthwatering— we know.

It’s looking like the port of Arma Tactics will not only hit Project Shield devices, but Tegra 4 and Tegra 3-based devices as well— so make sure to keep your eyes out in the Play Store for the imminent release in the near-future. In the meantime, check out the trailer video at the source link for yourself.

OUYA confirms all Kickstarter Backers will receive their devices by the end of May

OUYA ‘s founder and CEO Julie Uhrman has posted a blog on Kickstarter detailing the road map for consoles heading to early backers. I don’t know about anyone else but I am really excited to see that OUYA has their ducks in a row like this. In this roadmap she explains that they have changed one of their partners to speed up production by a few days, as well as put more OUYA reps on the ground to speed things up.

Ouya_Shipping_Chart

Backers of the  new console can expect to have it  in their hands by the end of May, just in time for the retail orders to start shipping out for June. I myself am looking forward to the June release. I was unable to get in on the Kickstarter so I had to pre-order one from Amazon. I’m sure their are a lot of people that can’t wait to get this device in their hands, and I’m on that list.

Android Key Lime Pie: What we are hoping to see

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 09:56 AM PDT

There is always going to be talk of upcoming releases of Android, and in this case we are taking a look at what we expect to arrive as Android Key Lime Pie. Google has yet to say when they would be making an announcement for Key Lime Pie, however based on previous history, it seems fairly safe to think that talk will happen in May during Google I/O. For those who may not be as familiar with those dates, Google I/O will begin on May 15 and run through May 17.

Key-Lime-Pie

Kicking things off with the name, Key Lime Pie. While we haven’t seen anything specific saying that Key Lime Pie would be Android 5.0, we have seen the name confirmed by a Google employee. Said employee posted a cartoon drawing showing the evolution of Android over the years and as you can see (below), the robot on the far right is eating a piece of key lime pie. Nothing shocking in that respect, but at least we have a name.

2012.11.30_android_evolution-540x108

In addition to the confirmation on the name, we also saw details talking about when we could expect Key Lime Pie to be unveiled. These details came by way of Qualcomm. These were not necessarily leaked, but instead details that were published and then later retracted. Basically, Qualcomm had said that Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie would be revealed in the “Spring of 2013.”

With talk of the Key Lime Pie name to the side, lets get into something a bit more fun to talk about — what we expect and what we are hoping to see introduced with Android 5.0 or whatever number they give it. One of the main items we hope to see improved is Google Now. Or maybe a bit more accurate, given the current state and usefulness of Google Now, this is an item we hope to see further improved. Google Now has a decent selection of cards with more being added on a fairly regular basis. You can simply launch Google Now to get the full look at all the cards, and Google also has previews of your cards sitting in the notification drop down shade.

google-now-screens-540

While we don’t have an specific requests for additional card items in Google Now, it seems reasonable to believe Google will add a bit more. If nothing else, it seems Google is using the simple design that we see with Now in other items. In this case, the recent Google Play update (still rolling out) seems to have taken some of those simplicity minded design features.

So, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie with a simpler overall design and a further improved Google Now. That is not really hoping for much. The fact is, while there is always room for improvement, Jelly Bean was a really nice update and at this point it seems the smaller and incremental changes may be a bit more welcomed. That is, unless you are hoping for something radical. Say, Google going in a crazy direction and having something similar to the recently launched Facebook Home, but based on Google Now and Google+. We sort of hope that doesn’t happen, however it may be interesting to see Google shift from the current UI and offer something based more on widgets and cards.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-09-at-10.53.48-AM-540x337

Whether or not Google decides to take the radical approach, it seems reasonable to expect that we will see some more improvements to the notification bar and drop down with goodies such as additional notification actions. Widgets will likely also see some work, quite possibly further enhancing the lock screen widgets. Then we have Project Butter. There is little room to argue that Google did something good with the release of Android 4.1. And then took things a step further with the release of Android 4.2 in terms of smoothness. Hopefully we see this concept taken further with Android 5.0 (or 4.3 or whatever Google ends up calling Key Lime Pie).

Another item we hope to see is something with backing up. Basically, some sort of backup tool. We need something drop dead simple here. But at the same time, something robust. We look at this given we are moving to a place where people are doing more and more on their phones. If we saw something like this, maybe we could stop hearing those stories about how people always feel the need to start fresh with a new smartphone because they don’t know how to transfer data from old to new. You know, those stories about people losing images are always terrible. Maybe Google could work something up that integrates with Google Drive. And sure, some of this is happening with Google+ already.

Google-allows-3rd-party-apps-to-implement-realtime-features-540x337

Some other items touch on a better and unified messaging experience. Of course, it seems as if we have already begun getting a look at that thanks to the recent Babel related leaks. We may also see a bit more with Google Keep, this was introduced as a note taking system and while it seems to work as intended, there seems to be more that Google could do in order to make it truly useful. Or at the very least, to convince Evernote loyalists to even consider a switch, which is something that has yet to happen.

Finally — improvements to battery life. This is a given as one of the biggest issues always deals with the lack of battery life. Sure, this can be controlled to some extend, but further enhancements here would likely be appreciated by all. We know Google Glass will be a big part of Google I/O, but how will it tie into the next version of Android? All that said, at this point we are a little more than a month away from Google I/O which really just means that we still have time to speculate and hope. So how about it, what are your Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie hopes and dreams?
