Nvidia solves "mechanical issue," will ship Shield units July 31 Jul 21st 2013, 18:26, by Kyle Wiggers Android (and PC) gaming fans who pre-ordered Nvidia's Shield handheld have reason to rejoice. After a lengthy delay caused by a "mechanical issue" with third-party parts, the company announced today that units will ship July 31. The Shield has undergone a number of changes since its Consumer Electronics Show reveal earlier this year. In response to consumer feedback, Nvidia lowered the price to $299 shortly before the Shield's release. The company also worked to improve the device's look and feel before launch; the finalized hardware includes improved button, trigger, and d-pad responsiveness, a beefier screen hinge, and reduced streaming game latency for Nvidia graphics cards that support the functionality. Billed as a console-cum-game streamer, Nvidia envisions the Shield as a sort of showcase for the company's newest mobile chipset, Tegra 4. It's unsurprising, then, that the device's internals aren't unlike those of a high-end smartphone: in addition to the quad-core reference CPU clocked at 1.7 GHz, the Shield packs 2GB of RAM, a 5-inch, 720p display, Bluetooth 3.0, a gyroscope and accelerometer, and even GPS. Nvidia's operating system of choice – stock Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean – is an even clearer indication that the company hopes to galvanize the developer community with Shield ahead of a broader Tegra 4 rollout. Those who pre-ordered the Shield should receive a shipping confirmation in the next couple of weeks. Any folks interested in placing an order can do so at Nvidia’s website.

Motorola Mobility stepping up efforts in wearable tech Jul 20th 2013, 20:22, by Jeff Causey Motorola Mobility recently posted a job listing for a senior director of industrial design for wearables, indicating the Google-owned unit is looking to ramp up their efforts in the wearable device market space. This should not be that big a surprise when one considers Google’s efforts with their Glass project and all of the smartwatch devices coming out from several vendors. The position listing indicates the person will “provide strategic leadership, champion innovation and institute best practices to create a new world class wearable’s (sic) design group within Motorola.” The listing also makes it clear the new unit will be focused on the consumer market based on some of the language. For example, the individual will “define design strategies that synthesize technology innovation and consumer desires” and will “ensure creative direction for design is consumer focused.” In the past, Motorola Mobility produced the MOTOACTV, a fitness focused device that was powered by Android. More recently, Motorola Mobility’s research division head, Regina Dugan, displayed an electronic authentication tattoo, which was basically a really thin patch fitted with sensors and antennas. Press shots of Moto X leak, full device revealed Jul 21st 2013, 02:28, by Harrison Kaminsky Although these are the best pictures to date that we’ve received of the Moto X, they’re certainly not revealing anything groundbreaking to us that we didn’t already know about it. (It feels as though we’ve seen hundreds of photos of the device throughout the past few weeks.) The device will be announced on August 1st and is expected to ship later in the month. To say we’re excited would be an understatement. Check out the second image (profile) of the device after the break. New Nexus 7 release date is July 30 for Best Buy, alleged ad says Jul 21st 2013, 17:01, by Chris Smith What looks like a leaked Best Buy ad seems to indicate that the new Nexus 7 will be launched next week, on July 30. A few days ago, a similar leak suggested that Staples will start selling the new tablet on July 31, with shipments coming in as soon as July 24, which are to be kept under locked until launch. The new Best Buy ad, discovered by Phone Arena, says the tablet will start selling "Tuesday." Considering that next Tuesday is July 23 – and Google's media event during which we believed the new Nexus 7 will be announced takes place on July 24 – it makes sense to assume that Best Buy would launch it a week later, on July 30. The publication says that according to the tipster who sent the image, the Best Buy flyer is set to run next Sunday, or July 28. While the July 30 date is implied rather than explicitly confirmed, the ad does clearly list the device's price and some of its specs. We're looking at a 16GB new Nexus 7 version that packs a 1920 x 1200 display, and costs $229.99, a price in line with previous leaks. Furthermore, the tablet is listed as “Google Nexus 7″ and the device is apparently also shown in the ad, and marked as a "new" arrival. For what it's worth, the device has a different wallpaper than the first-gen Nexus 7′s, similar to the current wallpaper of the Nexus 10. That said, we'll have to wait for Google to announce the tablet to get official details about its launch.
