SoftBank unveils 4G LTE-compatible smartphones for winter, spring 2014 Sep 30th 2013, 08:08, by Juan Carlos Torres Japense carrier Softbank has just announced three new Android smartphones that will make up its 4G LTE line for the rest of the year until early next year. The Fujitsu Arrows A 301F, the Sharp AQUOS Xx mini 303SH and the AQUOS Xx 302SH will be available in a series of launches starting December this year. The Fujitsu Arrows A 301F features a 5-inch 1080p display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2 GB of memory and 64 GB of internal storage, and Android 4.2. It has a 13.1 megapixel rear camera with smart quick focus and intelligent flash. One of its selling points is its quick charge feature, allowing the 2600 mAh battery to be charged for just about 10 minutes and last for a whole day. The Fujitsu Arrows A 301F also features a fingerprint sensor at the back. The Sharp AQUOS Xx 302SH and Xx mini 303SH are, in some ways, birds of the same feather. Both sport Sharp’s IGZO display technology and support 1080p resolutions, although the Xx Mini 303SH, as the name implies, has a 4.5-inch display compared to the 5.2-inches of the Xx 303SH. Both run on a Snapdragon 800 processor and have 2 GB of memory, but the smaller device only has 16 GB of storage while its bigger sibling has 32 GB. The two smartphones also differ in rear camera specs, with the 303SH sporting 13.1 megapixels and the 302SH having 16.3 megapixels. Like the Arrows A 301F, both smartphones are running Android 4.2 SoftBank has not yet announced pricing but has detailed when the devices will become available. The Fujitsu Arrows A 301F will launch early December and will be available in white, black, and pink colors. Around the same time, the Sharp AQUOS Xx 302SH will arrive in lapis blue, white, black, and pink options. Lastly, the AQUOS Xx mini 303SH will land in February next year and will have a variety of color options such as turquoise, black, white, red, blue, gold, light pink, and vivid pink. At least, the code shows that ads are now supported, with a variety of evidence appearing to indicate their imminent appearance, including a new ad library and icon. Nexus 5 running Android 4.4 KitKat screenshot leaked Sep 30th 2013, 08:52, by Kris Carlon We've been saying it for weeks now, and here's the evidence: the LG-built Nexus 5 will indeed be running Android 4.4 KitKat when it is released in October. You may remember our post recently that showed the new status bar and icons we'll see in Android 4.4 KitKat, but here's the first time we've seen it on the Nexus 5. Log files for the new device have also appeared, and we've got them for you below in the picture gallery. This particular Nexus 5 is running on the T-Mobile network. Samsung Galaxy Note 3, S4 Zoom fashionable accessories unveiled in Paris Sep 30th 2013, 06:34, by Juan Carlos Torres It’s fashion week in Paris and Samsung isn’t going to miss out on a chance to strut out its stuff on the runway. The company has unveiled a set of premium accessories for its Galaxy S4 Zoom camera smartphone and the newly launched Galaxy Note 3 that sports a distinct Korean flair. The accessories, consisting of a handbag and a couple of protective cases with shoulder straps, are part of the hexa by kuho womenswear collection. Made from leather material, the accessories come in black and white colors for the cases and black for the handbag. All the accessories are adorned with a Housouge pattern, a decorative floral medallion design originating from Korea. The Galaxy Note 3 clutch bag case features a zipper that can be fully opened to reveal the smartphone and has enough room for the phablet on one side and up to 3 cards on the other. The Galaxy S4 Zoom cases have been specifically designed to make room for the device’s camera lens. The case can either be attached to the leather handbag in the collection or as a standalone piece with its shoulder-length strap. Samsung has not released any information regarding the availability or pricing of these premium accessories. But considering they are labeled as avant-garde items from Korean designer Kuho Jung, we can imagine it might cost quite a lot. SOURCE: Samsung HTC Butterfly 2 front panels make an appearance in leaked photos Sep 30th 2013, 06:04, by Juan Carlos Torres We’re still waiting for the appearance of the HTC One Max, which is slowly becoming somewhat of a mythical beast. But in the meantime, it seems that the Taiwanese company is keeping its hands busy with a new iteration of an old line, the HTC Butterfly 2. The first HTC Butterfly was unveiled last year and was known as the DROID DNA in the US. That phone’s specs was quite decent even by today’s standards. It ran on a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. It sported a 5.0-inch display supported a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. It also had an 8 megapixel rear camera with a 2.1 megapixel camera on the front. A few months ago, the HTC Butterfly received an update that bumped its software to Android 4.2, with the US DROID DNA promised to follow soon. It seems, however, that HTC is planning to do more than just update the smartphone and instead unveil a refresh of the device itself. Information on the HTC Butterfly 2 is still quite slim at the moment, but it’s rumored to sport a larger 5.2-inch screen with the same 1080p resolution. It’s CPU is also supposed to be boosted to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. As an added bonus, the HTC Butterfly 2 is supposed to have some amount of waterproofing, up to IP7. Leaked photos of the supposed front panels to be used for the device show that the smartphone will be coming in white, black, and blue color options right out of the box. The HTC Butterfly 2 is rumored to be announced in January next year and it’s still unknown if it will make it to the US under the same name, if it will make it at all. Google claims second spot in most valuable brands of 2013 Sep 30th 2013, 03:07, by Juan Carlos Torres Perhaps unsurprisingly, Google has moved up the ranks to land second place in this year’s compilation of most valuable brands. The search and technology giant is just one step below Apple which has bagged the top spot in the list. Every year since 2000, brand consulting company Interbrand has been compiling a list of the 100 most valuable brands for the year. For the first time since it was started, soft drink maker Coca-Cola was not at the very top. That crown now belongs to Apple, who has risen from 8th place in 2011 to second place last year, and finally to first place. Further knocking it down a notch is Google, who has claimed second place after rising from the fourth spot in 2012. While this leaves Coca-Cola at third, it holds the distinction of being the only beverage company in the top 5, which is largely dominated by technology companies. In terms of the top 10 brands, it is joined by McDonald’s, who is at 7th, as the only companies in the food and beverage sector. IBM, who once held the third spot last year, now takes Google’s place at fourth. Surprisingly, Microsoft has managed to secure the same fifth place in both years, same as GE in sixth place. Intel has fallen from 8th to 9th, while Samsung has taken its place, rising from 9th to 8th. Toyota bags the 10th place again this year, with rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW not far behind, also at the same spots as in 2012. SOURCE: Interbrand, New York Times

Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 show up in leaked screenshot, log files too Sep 30th 2013, 03:22, by Derek Ross As we get closer and closer to the inevitable release date for the upcoming LG Nexus 5, more leaks and juicy tidbits of information are beginning to show up around the web. Previously, we showed you a leaked screenshot from an updated Google Keyboard on the Google Play Store depicting white status bar icons, which Google ended up removing. Nothing says confirmed like deleting a screenshot or a published YouTube video. This time we have for you an alleged screenshot that goes along with previous leaks and an accompanying bug report for good measure. As you can see below, the same white and grey status bar icons are shown once again. These are identical to the Korean Google Keyboard that we showed you last week. Besides being white, the WiFi icon is slightly tweaked and we can clearly see an Android Debug icon being shown. Either the debug icon is going to stay a Key Lime Pie for kicks or this build hasn’t been updated to reflect the new KitKat naming convention. You can also see an updated or internal version Google Authenticator being shown here. What’s most noticeable is the addition of a Bluetooth icon on top of the standard Google Authenticator icon.  I’d love for this Bluetooth and Authenticator hybrid icon to indicate Google’s stance on replacing passwords with a more secure method or turn out to be something similar to Motorola’s Trusted Devices, which disables your lock screen if you’re connected to certain Bluetooth devices. Next up, we have some log files which show us a few interesting aspects of the next Nexus phone from Google. We can see the board name ‘hammerhead’ which checks out in standard Nexus device fashion and we can see that LG is shown once again to be the device manufacturer, just in case we didn’t know for sure. The log files also show us the Android build number of Key Lime Pie KRS74H, which means it was cooked on September 13th. The Nexus 5 is apparently running on Linux Kernel version 3.4.0. Also, the display resolution is listed at 1920 x 1080, which matches previous rumors and FCC documents. This would put the PPI somewhere around 443, which checks out for a device with a 4.96″ screen. We can also see from the log files that the Nexus 5 will support wireless charging, once again matching previous leaked FCC documents. All in all, this is a great way to start out the week. Samsung's ChatON hits milestone of 100 million users Sep 30th 2013, 02:35, by Juan Carlos Torres Samsung Electronics has just released a statement boasting of their achievement of reaching 100 million users for its ChatON messaging service. The question is whether those figures will be enough for the service to secure a top spot in an already saturated market. According to Samsung, ChatON has enjoyed steady growth in countries such as India, China, and the US, although it is also probably experiencing tough competition from the top service providers in those regions. The company says that one of ChatON’s winning features is its internationalization, supporting 63 languages all over the world. It cites India as an example, where the service supports 10 regional dialects, with 13 more coming before the year ends. It is not that the messaging service doesn’t have desirable features. ChatON features easy drag and drop of images and links, which is especially useful when using multi-window capable devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S 4 or the newly released Galaxy Note 3. And, probably unknown to many, the app isn’t limited to just Samsung devices, as ChatON is also available on any Android, iOS, Blackberry or Windows Phone device, and even on the PC. However, compared to other service providers, ChatON is still probably lagging behind a bit. The instant messaging market is probably already bursting at the seams, with one more late player probably coming soon. So it remains to be seen if ChatON will catch on and become a top name that is both associated with Samsung but at the same time not perceived as limited to it. SOURCE: Samsung Galaxy S 4, S III, Note II Android 4.3 schedule confirmed by French carrier Sep 30th 2013, 01:59, by Juan Carlos Torres As we keep on the lookout for the upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat reveal next month, we’re still keeping an eye on Android 4.3, which seems to be slowly but surely rolling out to devices. Now we’re receiving confirmation that next in line to get the updates will not only be Samsung’s current Galaxy S 4 flagship but even last year’s Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II models as well. It’s probably not that easy to get excited about Android 4.3, as it is practically an incremental upgrade to the Jelly Bean line, aside probably from the introduction of new security features such as SELinux and restricted profiles. However, it is always a good thing when the latest generation of devices get updated to the latest Android version. Even better when year-old devices are also thrown into the mix. Fench carrier SFR has just released a timetable that details when various smartphones will be receiving which updates. The Samsung Galaxy S 4 is schedule to receive Android 4.3 in October. And, as earlier reported, the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II will also be receiving the update sometime around late November or possibly extending even to December. All Samsung updates will be delivered via KIES or OTA. Also included in the schedule is the HTC One, which is scheduled to be updated to Android 4.3 in October as well. Unlike the Samsung smartphones, however, the HTC update will only be available over the air. SOURCE: SFR VIA: GSMArena Gmail app update paves the way for ads Sep 30th 2013, 01:32, by Juan Carlos Torres Last week, Google rolled out a bevy of updates to its Android apps, most likely in preparation for the arrival of Android 4.4 KitKat. One update in particular was apparently more than what it seemed . The Gmail app might soon be getting a probably controversial feature in the form of advertisements. The Gmail app for Android was updated last week which introduced a more Card-centric look, bringing it in line with Google’s apparent efforts to push the card metaphor across its services and apps. However, based on an APK teardown, it seems that the update also included a feature hiding in the shadows, waiting to be activated. In the near future, Gmail users will be seeing ads in the Android app, with options not only to dismiss ads, but also to save them as an email. It’s not all bad news, however. The Gmail app update also added something useful for users. When navigating to the Sent section of the app, users will be reminded if they have an unsent email sitting in Drafts. The email notification has also been revamped, featuring a box containing the initial of the sender in case there is no photo associated with the sender. This matches the behavior already implemented within the app itself. It’s still unknown when Google will activate ads in the Gmail app or what form it will take. The move, while probably disappointing to a number of users, is not entirely surprising as the Gmail web interface already sports ads and it is no secret that advertisements play a major role in Google‘s income. It makes us wonder though, if Google will start putting ads in its other Android apps as well in the near future. VIA: Android Police
