Humble Bundle 7 available: Ticket to Ride, Worms Reloaded, four other games Oct 15th 2013, 22:48, by Chris Smith The guys over at Humble Bundle have a new games promo for interested gamers, with six games offered for less than $7. The list includes some interesting titles such as Ticket to Ride (with USA 1910 DLC), Worms Reloaded (Worms 2: Armageddon for Android devices), The Bard's Tale, Greed Corp, Incredipede and Anodyne. We'll note that Worms Reloaded and The Bard's Tale can only be downloaded if the average price is paid. It goes without saying that in addition to Android game play, you can also play these games on other platforms including Windows, Mac and Linux. Sold separately, these titles would retail for around $75, but you only need to pay the average price of $6.37 to unlock them all. Soundtracks for select games are also included with this purchase, although you'll have to beat the average price for some of them (Worms Reloaded and The Bard's Tale). Other games will soon be added, and they'll be available for download, as long as you pay more than the average price. The Humble Bundle 7 promotion will run for another two weeks, during which time you have plenty of time to decide whether you want to buy these titles or not. Final Fantasy VII for Android could take "years", says producer Oct 15th 2013, 22:43, by Nate Swanner With the announced release of Final Fantasy 6 on Android and iOS this Winter, many fans of the franchise immediately began hoping Final Fantasy VII would follow in short order. The immersive environment has been great for mobile gaming, but a FF VII port could be a long time coming. According to Square Enix, the game is just too massive. A mobile version of the game would probably check in at 3GB, which is well over the iOS threshold of 2GB. The Play Store allows for a 4GB limit, but it sounds as though Square Enix is more interested in taking advantage of both platforms, if they're going to port the game at all. Sadly, though current mobile devices can handle the graphic prowess of FF VII, Takashi Tokita, a producer on FF7, tells Shacknews it would be a long time before they felt comfortable porting the game over. Citing size issues with device storage, he said "It’s definitely going to be years before we do the port." A recent PC version was around 3GB, which leads many to believe it would be about that size. Of course, you can try to find a PlayStation emulator for Android, but those often require rooting and sideloading — and aren't quite on the right side of legal. In the meantime, fans of the franchise can still enjoy games like Final Fantasy IV: The After Years or Final Fantasy Agito. The Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra are seeing a firmware update to their Android 4.2 structure, and it's a good one. For the Xperia Z Ultra, they've re-configured the touch sensitivity. This will allow for a better capacitive recognition, no matter what you're using on the monster device. Finger, pencil, pen, stylus — it won't really matter, according to Sony. The Xperia Z1 will see an improvement to their already impressive 20MP shooter, with Sony saying they've "tweaked the camera algorithm for even better all round performance". The Sony Social Camera Platform has also been re-worked, which Sony says will make their proprietary camera apps run better on the device. Both devices will see increased display performance, as well as better power consumption. Sony has also revisited the exchange connection, and says it will improve email latency on both devices. Overall, this is a very impressive update, and shows Sony's prowess in acting quickly when they didn't necessarily need to. Verizon deploying LTE on AWS spectrum in major markets Oct 15th 2013, 23:06, by Andrew Martonik New spectrum along with carrier aggregation to improve Verizon's LTE offerings soon Following its nearly $4 billion purchase of AWS spectrum last year, Verizon is ready to start putting it to work for its LTE network in major markets across the U.S. The spectrum, which is also used by T-Mobile for its own network, will give Verizon more real estate to roll out its network to capable handsets. While Verizon isn't disclosing which markets are receiving the upgrades at this time, users have already pegged New York City as one of the markets. When Verizon does get around to using up its AWS holding in the largest markets, the carrier will be able to offer 20x20MHz LTE — essentially more lanes on a highway for cars to drive on. The number of devices actually capable of using LTE on AWS spectrum is limited, but Verizon says that those with the appropriate hardware will receive software updates to take advantage soon. read more

Air Command, other Galaxy Note 3 software features unofficially ported to the Galaxy Note 2 Oct 15th 2013, 21:31, by Chris Smith Galaxy Note 2 users looking forward to getting some of those new Galaxy Note 3 features on their one-year old supersized smartphone should be happy to hear that Air Command and a bunch of other Samsung tricks can be ported to the older model. Naturally, we expect a future Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy Note 2 to also pack some of Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 software features, but until that happens – word on the street is that Samsung will update the Galaxy Note 2 to Android 4.3 by the end of the year – there's an unofficial solution in the wild. xda-developers senior member titooo7 has managed to bring Air Command (Pen Window, Screen Writer, Scrapbook, Action Memo) and other software features to the Galaxy Note 2 including Gallery, Launcher, Safety Assistance, S Note, Sketchbook, and S Planner. However, not everything works just yet: Air View "appears twice in settings," and One Hand Operation "works for the keyboard, calendar and dialer, but not for 'all screens.'" That said, we'll remind you that we don't encourage you to install custom ROM versions on your smartphones and tablets, and that it's entirely up to you to decide firmware to run on your devices. In case you want to try out Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 features on your Galaxy Note 2, make sure you follow the instructions in the xda-developers thread (see Source links below). Paranoid Android releases official 0-Day GAPPS package, promises always up-to-date apps Oct 15th 2013, 22:18, by Andrew Grush As you might already know, flashing a custom ROM is a great way to make the most out of your Android device. Unfortunately, the experience isn’t always a straightforward one and requires time, patience and a little know how. Arguably one of the biggest inconveniences with flashing a custom ROM is that you have to manually install Google Apps if you want to enjoy Google Play and all the other great Google services. While this wouldn’t be that big of deal, the problem is that the provided links for GAPPS are often for an out of date version of the package, one that you later have to update. Here to tackle the issue, Paranoid Android has announced a new "0-Day PA Google Apps" package that is compatible with just about any ROM out there. This package is designed to provide a full set of unmodified, always up to date Google apps that include all necessary dependencies and libs. Further, the GAPPs have the ability to survive ROM updates and – at least on Paranoid Android – will even auto update over the air. Since the team doesn’t officially have Google’s permission to provide these apps, they are entering into a a bit legal gray area by providing their new 0-Day package. The Paranoid Android team admits that this is true, but remains hopeful that Google will ‘turn a blind eye”. We all know this is a legal gray area but let's face it, the outdated, broken, buggy, incomplete packages which are distributed throughout the developer/Rom scene do more harm than good. If Google decides to turn a blind eye on this let us at least do them the courtesy of making sure the original Google experience isn't broken or adulterated! Interested in learning more?
