Hovering Controls app arrives with Samsung-like air gestures Jul 21st 2013, 14:42, by Robert Nelson Samsung has a series of available air gestures. These include Quick Glance, Air Jump, Air Move, Air Call-Accept and more. While neat to see and neat to use, the obvious catch is that you will need to have a Samsung device in order to actually use any of those gestures. But with that in mind, it looks like a new app has brought some Samsung-like air gestures to other devices. The app is called Hovering Controls and is currently available only by way of the xda-developers forums. The apk file is available for download and perhaps more important — for those running Android 2.2 or later. Anyway, the app appears to still be in early days and is currently sitting at v1.2. Some of the features include being able to open an app with a hand gesture, play/pause/skip while listening to music, mute an alarm or ringing phone and more. Tapping Menu -> Test Sensors brings the option to test those hand slides. Otherwise, the app itself is fairly simple to navigate. The app launches to the main screen which offers options to start and stop the app as well as turn on Hover Hold, Target Mode, Carousel Mode and the Slide Twice options. These are all turned on by a single tap and from that point you would hit the Set button to configure the app. Once the apps are picked it is just a matter of testing and making sure things are working as expected. The Hovering Controls app also has a widget that will start and stop the app. With that in mind, as mentioned earlier, this seems to be early days for the app. It seemed to install, run and work just fine on our test device however some pieces are still missing. One example is the settings, you will see them in the Menu option but a click brings up nothing. Bottom line though, the Hovering Controls app is available for free (and in active development) and for those two reasons, it seems like one that may be worth checking out. SOURCE: xda-developers

NVIDIA Shield now shipping July 31 Jul 21st 2013, 14:00, by Phil Nickinson NVIDIA this morning announced that Shield -- its handheld, Android-based gaming system -- will ship on July 31, a little more than a month late. Shield originally was to ship June 27, but an unspecified "mechanical issue" with a "third-party component" pushed the launch into July. Shield, which is one of the first devices to use NVIDIA's new Tegra 4 system on a chip, is a mashup of console-style controller with a 5-inch touchscreen, running a relatively stock version of Android. It's mostly targeted toward hardcore gamers, but the move from $349 to $299 may open up that market somewhat. read more

CyanogenMod Nemesis teaser arrives promising "things can be better" Jul 21st 2013, 12:03, by Robert Nelson The folks at CyanogenMod have recently dropped a short teaser video. The video is dubbed the “Nemesis Teaser” and measures in at a rather short 30 seconds. And not only is the video short in length, it is also light on the details. Basically, this one truly lives up to the teaser name. But with that in mind, with statements such as how “things can be better” coming right from the beginning — we are a bit curious to see what CyanogenMod has coming. As per standard practice, there hasn’t been anything mentioned in terms of a timeline and for now it looks like we are at their mercy and simply waiting for more. The video (sitting above) is basically just a bunch of words starting with how “Nothing Can Be Perfect, Things Can Be Better.” From here the video goes into a bit that reads as follows; The right person at the right time The right pixel at the right time The right look at the right time The right path at the right time The right spark at the right time The right feeling at the right time The right formula at the right time The right tap at the right time The right person at the right time The right action at the right time The right reach at the right time The right smile at the right time From here it goes into a quick shot showing a lockscreen of a phone running on Free (a French carrier). This is followed by more text, which mentions “The Right Memories.” The ending of the video brings mention of a new challenger appearing and then closes with that nemesis mention. Otherwise, as one would expect there hasn’t been anything official said from the CyanogenMod team aside from this video. Also expected, the comments coming from the Google+ posting are filled with countless guesses and speculation. So how about it, any guesses as to what this could be? SOURCE: Google+

White Moto X and profile shot shown in new renders; FCC says 2200mAh battery on board Jul 21st 2013, 11:13, by Chris Smith A Twitter account known for the almost-always accurate mobile-related details revealed ahead of their time has posted new Moto X images, showing the handset's profile and an alleged press image of white version, but also details about the battery of the smartphone. New pics In the images below, you can see the white Moto X version of the handset, which is similar to the black version posted by the same @evleaks the other day. While we still have to wait for the August 1 New York-based Moto X press event to have these images confirmed, the device in them is pretty similar to the handset spotted in the hands of Eric Schmidt or in the leaked Rogers video. Purported Moto X press image | Image credit @evleaks A profile image of the black Moto X has also been offered by @evleaks (see below), suggesting that the handset will be rather slim, at least its bottom side, and have a curved back. As you can see, the leaked Moto X press renders show the handset only in white and black, which are supposedly the standard version models that carriers will get. That's what a report said a while ago, and a detail the Rogers video seemed to confirm. We'll most likely see the handset available in a variety of colors when ordered directly from Motorola / Google. That Moto X battery Considering the shape of the Moto X's profile, we can only wonder what battery it will pack, and whether it will be user-replaceable. @evleaks helps again, saying that the device will have a 2200mAh "internal/non-removable battery," "as tested for FCC certification. That's pretty much in line with what we've heard from an independent source, and with what Android Police has learned from its own sources. It will certainly interesting to see what battery life will be like on a device that's supposed to always listen for the user's verbal commands. Purported Moto X press image | Image credit @evleaks Moreover, considering that the Moto X will be customizable, it would be a logical assumption to make that buyers will be able to change the appearance of their device by ordering new cases for the handset. That would mean that they would be able to easily remove the back case, which would give them access to the battery. In such a scenario, the battery should also be easy to replace, if it were removable. However, it's not clear how Moto X customization would work and we're only speculating on the matter at this point, so we’ll wait for Google to make everything clear in a few weeks.
