Verizon "testing" the Nexus 7 LTE for certification on their network
Sep 19th 2013, 16:22, by Dima Aryeh

Many people bought the new Nexus 7 LTE model to use with their favorite carrier. The device supports LTE with AT&T, T-Mobile, and most surprisingly, Verizon. But when people went to Verizon stores and tried to activate a new line with their new tablet, they were met with disappointment. Verizon refuses to activate new lines with the Nexus 7 LTE because the device is not part of its lineup. It will not allow you to bring in foreign devices like this, despite them being designed for the network and avoiding CDMA altogether (LTE is GSM).

Many people were angry, and rightfully so. Why can’t a person use a device of their choice on a carrier? Verizon has now responded to the issue, and it’s better than nothing. It says that the Nexus 7 LTE is not certified to be used on the Verizon network. But “luckily,” Verizon is in the process of certifying it. With absolutely no ETA. Yes, those who already bought the tablet for use on Verizon will have to just sit and wait (or preferably take their business elsewhere if they don’t like these business practices).

Did Google submit the device for certification, or did Verizon start the process to appeal to customers? And why is certification necessary when the device is properly designed for the network? It’s a pretty ridiculous situation and only the customers lose. Hopefully certification won’t take too long for those who choose to stay with Verizon.

HP bolsters its Android lineup with four new tablets, two actually sound promising
Sep 19th 2013, 16:10, by Sean Riley

HP is certainly showing a renewed interest in the Android market this year with first the Slatebook X2 and now four additional Android tablets that will come to market before the holidays. The original Slate 7 was notable mainly for its low price, but the Slatebook X2 offers a more premium experience and has actually been greeted by predominantly solid reviews. Hopefully these new entries continue that trend.

Slate 8 Pro

This represents the top end of the new entries, and as you no doubt guessed, it offers an 8-inch (well 7.98) display. Unlike most Android tablets, HP has opted to go with a 4:3 aspect ratio like that of the iPad mini. Your feelings on that will likely hinge on whether you use your tablet more for watching video or consuming web content/reading. The resolution should be more than adequate at 1,600 x 1,200. Like the Slatebook X2, the Slate 8 Pro will be running a Tegra 4 processor. Cameras are fairly standard for a high-end tablet with 8MP in the rear and 2MP up front. Finally the Slate 8 Pro has you micro lovers covered with microSD, micro-USB and micro-HDMI.

Slate 7 Extreme

I can only say that I’m glad they didn’t call it the Slate 7 Xtreme. Despite not being mentioned yesterday, this is the HP branded version of NVIDIA’s Tegra Note. Hopefully that means HP will keep it around that $199 suggested price point. So, as a quick refresher on the Tegra Note specs, this means a 7-inch 1,280 x 800 display IPS display at 16:9. It will have 16GB of memory with microSD for expansion. Tegra 4 inside, naturally, and the capacitive stylus that gives the Tegra Note its name. A 5MP rear camera and VGA front-facing camera and front-facing speakers round out the specs list. Again we will be seeing the Tegra Note from a number of brands this year, but you may prefer having that HP logo on your device.

Slate 7 HD and Slate 10 HD

If you have any enemies on your holiday shopping list then these two devices would make good candidates. Both offer 1,280 x 800 displays, which on the 10-inch screen do not hold up well. They ditch the Tegra 4 processor of the other two tablets in favor of a low-end Marvell processor. They do have front and rear facing cameras as well as a microSD slot. All in all they are far from the worst options we’ve seen, but honestly, whatever the cost difference is it would be worth it to spring for the Slate 7 Extreme or one of the other branded Tegra Notes.

HP hasn’t announced pricing on any of these tablets yet, but they are expected to ship sometime in November.

While the Slate 8 Pro is the powerhouse of the group and could be interesting depending on the pricing, I still find the Tegra Note platform to be intriguing. As long as HP doesn’t decide to overcharge for their name recognition the Slate 7 Extreme may actually top my list.

Do either of these devices catch your eye or is the new Nexus 7 all you need from a small Android tablet?

HP announces four new Android tablets (including an iPad Mini wannabe)
Sep 19th 2013, 17:18, by Quentyn Kennemer

HP Slate8 Pro Tablet, Snow White with Android Screen, Front

HP has announced the addition of four new Android tablets to their growing lineup. They have a little bit of everything for everyone here, even those who are looking for an Android tablet that is almost the same size (including aspect ratio) as the iPad Mini. That particular tablet is the HP Slate 8 Pro, a 7.98-inch device that houses NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 chipset, an 8 megapixel rear camera, a 2 megapixel front camera and more. That 7.98-inch display pushes 1,600 x 1,200 pixels, so it’s even a bit better than the iPad Mini in that regard. You’ll also be able to find micro-HDMI out and a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

The next two tablets are like two peas within the same tablet-y pod. One is the Slate 7 HD, while the other is the Slate 10 HD. Both devices houses similar specs, with a dual-core processor of unknown make and model, 1,280 x 800 resolution and more. The screen sizes are noted by their names, natch, so no surprises there.

It sounds like these two are aimed for the market that don’t want to pay more than $200 – $300 for a tablet, though we’ll have to wait on official pricing information from HP to see if that’s what they’re thinking.

Finally, the HP Slate 7 Extreme is another Tegra 4 device. Its 7-inch display has 1,280 x 800 resolution and it has 16GB of internal storage, and with the stylus it ships with it sounds an awful lot like the NVIDIA Tegra Note reference platform we were made knowledgeable about yesterday.

HP Slate7 Extreme Advanced Cover with Android screen, Profile

NVIDIA says tablets derived from that reference platform have the ability of being as cheap as $200, though HP isn’t going to let us in on the price just yet. If it is indeed part of the line, this tablet also might house a 5 megapixel rear camera, a VGA front camera, 16GB of internal storage and more. Do not take that as gospel, though: we’ll be looking to confirm the exact specs in the moments to come.

HP’s four-pronged attack here seems a bit much, but it looks like they’re trying to hit on a lot of different points and form factors while still keeping options affordable across the board. What do you think of these?

New Trent PowerPak Xtreme brings a 12,000 mAh battery in rugged casing
Sep 19th 2013, 16:07, by Robert Nelson

Battery life often becomes an issue. For many though, you can find time throughout the day to plug in for a bit. The problem gets a bit worse for those who are out and about, and for that there is always the option to use a spare battery or an external battery back. There are a wide variety of these types of options available and it looks like New Trent has recently released the PowerPak Xtreme.

New-Trent-PowerPak-Xtreme-03

The PowerPak Xtreme, as the name would imply, is a rugged device. In fact, this one is said to be “built for the rugged.” It is drop-resistant and waterproof to 3 feet of water for up to an hour. With that in mind, the battery pack still weighs in at just 9 ounces. And for those curious it measures in at 5.2 x 2.8 x 1.2-inches.

Perhaps more important here, New Trent has this one packed with a 12,000 mAh battery, which should be able to provide at least a few charges depending on the device you are carrying. The Xtreme also two USB ports — one is 1A and the other is 2.1A. This battery pack is able to charge smartphones and tablets and is sporting a matte black finish.

The PowerPak Xtreme is available at this time and can be found direct from the New Trent website or with Amazon. Bottom line here, this one should be good for those looking for some extra power and slightly better for those who may be in need of that extra power while on the trails or engaged in some other types of outdoor activity.

HTC One Max pictured once again with the Galaxy Note 3
Sep 19th 2013, 15:24, by Robert Nelson

It seemed most of the HTC One Max leaks had been focused on that little square box that is sitting on the back of the handset. The one that sits just below the camera lens and is expected to be a fingerprint scanner. Well, looking at some of the more recent leaks and it looks like the Galaxy Note 3 is becoming a trusty companion.

We saw a series of leaked images comparing the One Max and Galaxy Note 3 earlier in the week and it looks like another has arrived today. This latest round includes three images, of which, all have come by way of the Chinese language weibo. Up until this point the Galaxy Note 3 has taken some honor in being one of the larger smartphones, but it looks like the One Max will step things up just a bit.

The HTC One Max is expected to arrive with a 5.9-inch display, as compared to the 5.7-inch display on the Note 3. We already know the Note 3 has a Full HD display and based on the rumors, the One Max should have the same. Other still rumored specs for the HTC One Max include Android 4.3 Jelly Bean along with a 3300 mAh battery, fingerprint sensor, 2GB of RAM, quad-core Snapdragon processor and an UltraPixel camera.

one max 1 one max 2 one max

In comparison, the Note 3 has a 3200 mAh battery, 3GB of RAM, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 13 megapixel rear-facing camera. While we haven’t seen anything official from HTC just yet, they are expected to announce the One Max in October. Time will tell how accurate that timeline and these specs leaks have been, but for now we do have some benchmarks from an earlier leak.

That one detailed benchmarks from AnTuTu and have the One Max sitting with a score of 26,417. What this means is we may be looking at a handset that is introduced with a Snapdragon 600 processor as opposed to the widely rumored Snapdragon 800 processor. But again, this is all speculation based on rumor.
