Posted: 06 Feb 2012 01:54 AM PST After a series of naming their new devices after single letters, is Sony finally ready to break free from this norm? Recently, Sony has filed a trademark name at the US Trademark and Patents Office for their newest offering, the Xperia Sola. This bit of news came after the company announced the first US bound Sony smartphone, the Xperia Ion. Several think that the Sola is among the mysterious devices listed on the 2012 roadmap which leaked last night. However, it is typical for companies to register trademarks which they end up not using. But considering the strong attachment of the company to the Xperia name, it's very likely that the Sola will be a reality. So what does the word 'Sola' mean? It is a Spanish feminine form which translates to 'alone' or 'solo.' Hmm… Do you think Sony's up to something here? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below! Posted: 06 Feb 2012 01:23 AM PST It looks like there's no stopping the Samsung Galaxy S2 when it comes to firmware updates. From official releases by Samsung to underground modified versions, the Galaxy S2 proves to be a fantastic device among many consumers. Just last week, we've posted about firmware updates for the Galaxy S2, one of the latest of which was the leaked official firmware for Android 4.0.3 ICS build XXLP2 (and also how to root your Galaxy S2 running XXLP2 firmware). Not long after that official ROM from Samsung leaked out, we got wind of a more up-to-date leaked ROM for the Galaxy S2. The new leaked firmware for the Galaxy S2 brings build XXLP6 of Android 4.0.3 ICS and is believed to be a better and much-improved version than build XXLP2. According to sources, the official firmware is targeted for official rollout starting in March, but for some people, the wait is too long. Build XXLP6 will reportedly introduce some changes to the interface in the form of new apps such as Google+ and Google Messenger. According to users who have tried the new firmware, the Galaxy S2 seems to run faster under this firmware, although touch responsiveness remains the same as that on build XXLP2. Face Unlock has been reported to work, and Task Manager has been reinstated. By the looks of it, firmware build XXLP6 looks like it’s worth trying. Since Samsung has not yet pushed out this official firmware for the Galaxy S2, you can’t update your phone with it through Samsung KIES. But, if you want to try it, you can manually flash it to your phone using the leaked firmware and Odin3. Read the rest of this guide for the instructions. Requirements

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 01:18 AM PST For those of you who frequently make or receive calls on your Android phone, an effective app known as SpeakerProximity can be a handy app. In a nutshell, the app provides automatic switching between earpiece and loudspeaker, depending on how far your phone is from you. SpeakerProxmity can be extremely useful in sticky situations when you need both hands on the wheel or when taking calls while performing certain tasks requiring both hands. With the application enabled, all you need to do is take your call, mount the device on a stand, and you're good to go. The application works like magic, once you receive a call the application determines the distance from your ear and automatically transfers your ongoing call from your phone's earpiece to your loudspeaker–and vice-versa. Launching the application on its first run will prompt you with a quick proximity sensor test to calibrate your device sensors. Calibrating your device requires you to manually set your phone's proximity sensors for the app to work correctly when you receive calls. The test can be performed as many times as you want to calibrate or to check if the proximity sensor is working as expected. Aside from rerouting audio to your phone's loudspeaker, the application also packs some handy features that you will surely love. One interesting feature known as the Headset Check helps you determine whether or not your device is connected to your headset. If your headset is connected to your phone and is currently being used, the Headset Check feature prevents the application from interfering during calls, regardless of whether proximity sensor is being covered or not. So, with Headset Check enabled, audio from all calls will always be routed to your headset. Another feature, the Conference Mode feature, lets you keep listening to your calls using the speakerphone regardless of whether the proximity sensor is covered or not. Thus, when in Conference Mode, all audio from your calls will always be routed to the loudspeaker. There is also the Speaker Start feature, which lets you automatically transfer all outgoing calls directly to your speakerphone. As soon as you cover your phone's proximity sensor, the said feature will automatically be disabled, thereby shifting the call to your earpiece. Most high-end and recent Android phones already have built-in proximity sensors, so you should be able to set up SpeakerProximity and use it on such devices. But, just to be sure, find out first whether your device has a proximity sensor, otherwise the app won’t work. The SpeakerProximity application is currently in beta development. The application is not yet available on the Android Market, but if you wish to give it a try, you can grab the latest APK for free from its Google Project downloads page. What do you think of the SpeakerProximity app? Is it something that makes calls more convenient on your Android phone? YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE

Posted: 05 Feb 2012 03:04 PM PST It looks like Motorola is getting ready to do another soak test for the Droid Bionic, but is it for Ice Cream Sandwich or just a bug fix update which will hopefully prevent the infamous data drops we see constantly and get annoyed by. We have seen many reports that people are getting emails from Motorola’s Feedback Network about a soak test for their Droid Bionic. We don’t know for sure what update this is, but we are betting it’s the 5.9.902 update that was leaked back in mid-january. Droid-Life has the changelog from that leak, and we have it listed below:

Posted: 05 Feb 2012 02:57 PM PST Good news for Facebook fanatics! The Facebook app for Android has been updated. This is good news for everyone who’s always itching to keep themselves connected to their Facebook account. The original was a bit buggy and had quite a few problems that made it a pain to use. However, this update sets a few things right and manages to deliver several new options to the table. The first thing the update did is provide a noticeable improvement in performance. The initial offering of the app was a bit slow, taking some time for it to load. Now, all it takes is a press of a button and the app delivers the page that you want – whether it be groups, apps, pages or settings. Next up is a smoother search and photo interface. Users can zoom in and out on their photos now, and a more robust search function in the app lets them find anything they want. Notifications are also improved – they’re now in real-time, keeping users up-to-date on anything that happens on their page. Apps have also been made more compatible with the mobile setup. Games and various other applications are now more streamlined and fit the screen better. Access to the Facebook timeline and friend lists has been added, as well as subscriptions. It’s not all perfect though. There are noticeable gaps in functionality like the lack of a back button and exit keys. It also has some issues on some phones – but these are minor things that will probably be ironed out soon. As of now, enjoy the new update. Posted: 05 Feb 2012 01:56 PM PST It’s Super Bowl Sunday! The biggest day of the year in the NFL, this year we have the New England Patriots representing the AFC, and the New York Giants representing the NFC. Many are comparing this to the Super Bowl XLII in 2008 where the New England Patriots were undefeated until the New York Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl and killed their dreams of having a perfect season. Don’t forget if you’re a Verizon Wireless customer you can watch the game for free on your mobile device. Another great part of the Super Bowl? The commercials, we have heard that Chrysler is again airing a big commercial (I think I heard somewhere that it was going to be about 2 minutes long). Last year Chrysler’s commercial featured Detroit native Eminem “This is Detroit, and this is what we do”. So after you vote in the poll below, share you’re favorite Super Bowl commercial(s) memories. Being raised in Detroit, I really loved last year’s Chrysler commercial with Eminem, but what’s yours? Posted: 05 Feb 2012 10:33 AM PST For those of us with Verizon we are pretty lucky. We already get one of the coolest NFL apps, NFL Mobile, which is exclusive to only Verizon. Now we find out we can watch the Superbowl tonight live on NFL Mobile? Pretty darn sweet. Unfortunately it’s not for all devices, we are sorry about that one. All 4G LTE customers get NFL Mobile's Premium Red Zone service that usually costs a few bucks a month for free, but for the Super Bowl everyone with the app will be able to enjoy the game. It will be the first time that the Super Bowl will be officially streamed to mobile devices, a miracle of licensing negotiation as much as a technical achievement. The BIG game will also be streamed from many other sources and sites including NBC's Sunday Night Football Extra web service, but that requires a subscription. I'm sure there are many other ways you'll all be watching the big game and we'd love to hear them. For everyone that isn't on Verizon and doesn't have NFL Mobile — sorry about that. I wish it was for all Android devices too. So who’s your pick in the big game tonight? And MVP? Hit up the comments and let us know. I’ve got the Patriots (as always) and probably Tom Brady as MVP again. YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE
