Sony & Box Renew Free 50GB Cloud Storage For Life Promotion For 2013 Posted: 08 Dec 2012 05:38 AM PST
You remember how Sony and Box came together to offer Xperia owners a cloud storage deal they couldn’t refuse? Well both are back and set to offer the same free 50GB of cloud storage for life promotion— this time running until the end of 2013. You read that right folks: if you happen to own a Sony Xperia variant, Sony and Box are offering 50GB of free cloud storage all for the price of gratis. The promotion applies to most of the various Xperia-esque models—- though the deal doesn’t apply to the Xperia X10 mini, X10 mini pro or any device that runs on Android 2.1 or older. Nevertheless, those of you who do own a fairly recent Xperia smartphone have no excuse not to take advantage of this awesome promotion. After all— how else will you store those vast amounts of Frank Zappa albums? You can find full details of the promotion in the presser after the break.

T-Mobile confirms in-house GoSmart Mobile prepaid service to launch next year Posted: 07 Dec 2012 10:26 PM PST After recent leaks outed T-Mobile’s plans to unleash its own dedicated prepaid service, the carrier officially shed the curtains of secrecy and revealed its low-cost GoSmart Mobile network. Ole’ Magenta announced today that it has already begun trialing the network, offering a selection of three prepaid-only plans. $30 per month will get you unlimited calling and texting. Throw in an extra $5 and you’ll also get unlimited 2G data, while faster 3G speeds will set you back $45. Unfortunately, users with the 3G data plan will still have their speeds throttled after 5GB, similar to T-Mobile’s own offerings. It remains unclear as to how T-Mobile plans to balance its prepaid network with newly acquired MetroPCS, though the carrier will have plenty of time to figure it out considering GoSmart Mobile isn’t slated to make its nationwide launch until 2013. Nexus 4 doesn’t actually have USB OTG support and may never have it Posted: 07 Dec 2012 08:31 PM PST The LG Nexus 4 is either a great new flagship, or a half-baked device missing several important features, depending on who you ask. Unfortunately it looks like the latter is getting a little more ammunition as it’s recently surfaced that the Nexus 4 has no USB OTG (on-the-go) support. USB OTG cables allow users to connect a mouse, keyboard, flash drive, etc. to the phone to set it up as a more powerful workstation or add more memory to a phone that, like the Nexus 4, has no other expandable storage. Originally, the Nexus 4 specs did say it supported USB connections just like the Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Galaxy Nexus. Now, however, the support page lists connecting devices via bluetooth and clearly saying that USB connections are not supported. There’s been some speculation over whether this is a matter of hardware or just a software bug, but since the bigger brothers in the Nexus line still have USB OTG support, I think it’s more likely to be hardware. Of course, for that crazy price point Google hit with the Nexus 4, it’s not surprising that some cuts had to be made. Depending on how you use the phone, this could be a pretty big deal breaker, especially considering competing phones have enough power to almost act as a full desktop PC replacement. Is this going to affect any of you about whether or not you were going to buy a Nexus 4? source: Google

New Action Launcher Pro now available in Google Play Store Posted: 07 Dec 2012 08:17 PM PST Developer Chris Lacy, who brought us the Tweet Lanes Twitter client, is taking a crack at the market for launchers on Android devices. The new app is called Action Launcher Pro and is now available in the Google Play Store for $3.99. Lacy has incorporated a couple unique features in an effort to stand out from the crowd. Action Launcher includes an app drawer that slides in from the side of the screen, providing a smooth scrolling list of apps. Lacy demonstrates in a video for Action Launcher how this feature gives users access to an app in only a couple seconds max. The other major feature is a concept called “covers.” The covers let users group their most used app destinations into a group that can be accessed via a double-tap on the app icon. Using covers, users can get to their most visited web sites or contacts in only a couple clicks. Lacy indicates the app includes several other tweaks to improve the user experience like having the action bar present on the homescreen, organized customization options, and importing of your current launcher setup. Some feedback for the app indicates there are still a few bugs present. If you want to give Action Launcher Pro a try, use one of the download links below. Click here to view the embedded video.

USPTO declares Apple’s multitouch patent invalid Posted: 07 Dec 2012 07:28 PM PST
Apple has always been a little over possessive of “multitouch,” but today it appears the USPTO has put an end to that unhealthy affair. In a preliminary ruling, the multitouch patent was found invalid on all 20 points. This is unfortunate for Apple as that patent was the basis of nearly all of their multitouch patent lawsuits, including the lawsuit against Motorola that was tossed out of court earlier in June. Although this could be overturned in higher courts, I’m hopeful that the USPTO will understand that these incredibly broad and vague patents are stifling to innovation and hopefully keep this one invalidated. source: FOSS Patents

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Camera with LTE confirmed Posted: 07 Dec 2012 11:51 AM PST Just one week ago we caught a glimpse of the Galaxy Camera with 4G LTE skating past the FCC. Now we can all but make it official thanks to a Samsung product page (which has since been taken down). The addition of LTE should make using the camera blazing fast, but the price is a little difficult to justify. No official pricing was mentioned on the product page, but it shouldn’t be too much different than AT&T’s version, if at all. I’m looking forward to more of these things getting out in the wild so we can get a better feel for it. What are your thoughts on the Galaxy Camera? source: The Verge

Gameloft’s 2013 game lineup leaked? Posted: 07 Dec 2012 11:29 AM PST Good news for Gameloft fans or gaming fans in general. Gameloft, one of the most well-known game developer/publishers, had its 2013 game lineup leaked last night. While we can get a pretty good idea without the list of what to expect based on their history, this leak seems all but definitive. Among the games slated for a 2013 release are: A new Asphalt game, a new Dungeon Hunter title, a new Gangstar title, and a new Order & Chaos game. Additionally we’ll see another Brothers in Arms game, Modern Combat 5, and a totally different FPS game will be introduced. Interestingly, a N.O.V.A. title wasn’t listed but perhaps the ‘new’ FPS mentioned will take its place, or will it possibly be a spin-off? Regardless, the gaming front looks nice for 2013 from Gameloft. Now, if we can only get an update on the availability of Modern Combat 4 on the Play Store… source: DroidGamers

YouTube video ad confirms multiple color options for HTC Butterfly [Video] Posted: 07 Dec 2012 11:26 AM PST A quick look at HTC’s latest ad for their Butterfly reveals multiple color options for the device. The 2 minute video shows red, white and black colors for the phone in all its elegance. Sadly, the device is still available only in Asia, but we get the DROID DNA in the United States minus the microSD slot. If HTC wants to gain more ground, they should really push for devices such as these to be available world wide, don’t you think? Either way, check out the video after the break!
