Samsung on Wednesday confirmed that select older Galaxy smartphones will soon be able to interact with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Specifically, once a software update is in place, the devices will be compatible with the wearable tech. Devices expected to see the 4.3 Jelly Bean update (with support) include the Galaxy S4, S III, and Note II.
"Extending Galaxy Gear compatibility to more Galaxy devices reflects our deep commitment to continuing to deliver enriched mobile experiences to our consumers," said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile division, Samsung Electronics.
A separate software update is expected to soon hit the Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, Mega 5.8, Mega 6.3, and S4 Zoom. Once this non-system update is pushed out the other models will also be able to connect with the Galaxy Gear. Beginning later this month, the timing for each device will vary by market and carrier.
