Talk Mobile Cloud Week Recap: The best things you said
Aug 22nd 2013, 18:19, by Talk Mobile

Talk Mobile Clouds week dove head first into the world of clouds, bridging the internet, mobile, and desktop computing in one fell swoop. It was less about the individual features of each cloud service and more about how these clouds fit into our lives, how they can improve our digital lives, and where they're going in the future.

As always, your feedback is tremendously important to us and continues to help shape and refine Talk Mobile. We're more than half-way through Talk Mobile 2013, but we still want to hear what you think. So there are comments below for you to do just that. Tell us what's great, tell us what sucks - we want to hear it all!

Talk Mobile has always been about elevating the discussion - not just what we write about, but what you in the community are talking about. The Mobile Nations community has definitely stepped up to that challenge, taking on our questions, our statements, and each other in broad and spirited debates about the state of mobile. And really, that shouldn't be a surprise, given how awesome you all are.

Moto X review
Aug 22nd 2013, 17:31, by Phil Nickinson

Moto X

Motorola is back with one of the best designed and built phones we've seen in a while — and it's customizable. (Eventually with wood!) But it's got one seriously disappointing feature, too.

Once a year or so you get one of those smartphones that’s supposed to change everything. Maybe it’s so full of features it’s hard to know where to start. Maybe it beats the price of every other phone available, but it’s just not a mainstream device. Maybe it does one or two things extremely well but lacks in other areas.

Moto XFor many, Moto X is supposed to be that phone in 2013. The rebirth of Motorola, under Google’s umbrage. Android for everyone. Pick your platitude, attach the “Moto X” name to it and watch the excitement build.

Thing is, it’s just a phone, folks. Moto X is a damn good phone, too. It’s comfortable. Familiar. Beautifully designed. And deceivingly simple. It alleviates some concerns we’ve had with other devices — battery life, namely — while falling short in other areas. But at the end of the day, does it really represent some sort of paradigm shift in the Android smartphone space?

We’ve spent three solid weeks with Moto X as the only phone in our pocket. Will it ride out the rest of the year there until the Next Big Thing?

Let’s dive into it — this is the Android Central Moto X review.

HTC One now available on Verizon Wireless, $199.99 on a new two-year contract

htc one coming to verizon

All that waiting seems to have finally paid off, as the HTC One is now available on Verizon! You can pick it up today for $199.99 on a new two-year contract or, if you’d like to avoid all of those contract hurdles, you can get it for $599.99 outright.

The HTC One is only available in 32GB and silver through Verizon. So your choices are very limited. If you want different colors, you’ll have to go with another carrier, such as Sprint who holds the exclusive on the red HTC One.

Verizon’s HTC One is actually running Android 4.2.2 while AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile versions are still on 4.1. Of course, that shouldn’t be a problem for long, as an HTC exec said all U.S. and Canadian models should be updated to 4.3 by the end of September. Then again, that might take a bit longer with Verizon in the loop now.

It’ll be interesting to see just how well the HTC One will sell on Verizon after the carrier launched it so late in the device’s life cycle. It’ll probably sell well, but with a few top tier devices about to launch (e.g. LG G2, Moto X, and etc) it’ll be interesting, that’s for sure.

Still not sure about purchasing the HTC One? Be sure to check out our full review (video below).

What do you think about the HTC One on Verizon? Are you excited or did they launch the device way too late in the One’s life cycle? Let me know in the comments!

Chromecast back in stock with Best Buy with three-month free Netflix promo [Update]
Aug 22nd 2013, 17:09, by Chris Smith

Chromecast

Google's Chromecast is back in stock with Best Buy, with purchases still bundled with three months of free Netflix streaming.

Announced alongside the new Nexus 7 in late July, the Chromecast has been quite a successful device. The device is still not available directly from Google – the Play Store has a September 3 ship date for the Chromecast – while Amazon currently lists out of stock.

Interested buyers ordering the Chromecast from BestBuy.com right now will have it shipped to their door in one business day and, more importantly, get to enjoy those three months of free Netflix.

The Netflix bundles were quickly sold out once Google started selling the device, with some reports revealing that up to 250,000 units with Netflix promos may have been sold in the first days. However, that number has not been confirmed, and from the looks of it, Best Buy still has access to Chromecasts-plus-Netflix bundles.

On a different note, the Chromecast's abilities have been greatly increased since being announced, with the developer community coming out with all sorts of interesting tricks for the device – more recently, an Android app that lets you stream local content has been released in beta version.

[Update:] And they’re gone! The available stock has already been sold out.

New Nokia Lumia 1020 commercial pokes fun at Samsung vs iPhone rivalry
Aug 22nd 2013, 16:53, by Bogdan Petrovan

nokia lumina 1020 ad samsung apple

Want to make your product stand out? Easy, just make fun of the incumbent market leader and position your own product as hip and fresh. Apple did it to great effect with the Mac vs PC series, then Samsung took it to the next level with its ongoing series of Galaxy vs iPhone commercials.

Nokia seems to be gunning for the same approach, except they target two players at once – Samsung and Apple. After the spot it launched in April had wedding goers go at each other throats in the name of smartphone allegiance, Nokia is revisiting the topic with this Lumia 1020 commercial:

The ad includes the obligatory reference to taking pics with an iPad (seriously, why do people do that?) but also to the software features that Samsung loves so much to tout (Drama Shot, bump to share, etc.) Naturally, the Lumia 1020 emerges as the superior option, that the laidback, good-looking people use.

Regardless which side you're on, good natured ads like this serve to remind that fanboyism isn't cool, don't you agree?

Motorola Skip Setup app for Moto X now available in the Play Store

Late last week, Motorola introduced Motorola Skip, which is a small clip that you can clip to your belt or shirt that will unlock your Moto X with a single tap. This is especially important for those of you that use a security lock screen such as a PIN or pattern, which I highly recommend. It costs only $20, and they include three Skip dots, which is the same thing but in sticker form to leave in different areas of your house.

In order to use Skip or Skip dots, you have to pair your phone to each Skip and Skip dot. This ensures that somebody else with another Skip or Skip dot won’t be able to unlock your Moto X. Motorola just released the Skip Setup app to assist you in this pairing process. Hit the break for download links, and remember, all custom Moto X orders will receive a Motorola Skip (and three Skip dots) for free for a limited time. Be sure to see our Moto X guides to help you get the most out of your new phone.
