CyanogenMod's cLock widget makes Google Play debut as "Chronus" Sep 27th 2013, 19:54, by Chris Chavez It was back in February of this year that the CyanogenMod team announced that they would be changing the name of their custom clock widget, Chronus, to that of “cLock”. This was due to the team being hit with a cease and desist letter from someone claiming to own the rights to the name. Today, the CyanogenMod developer responsible for the clock widget is announcing the triumphant return of “Chronus”, this time available to all in the Google Play Store. The app is completely free to download and, similar to apps like DashClock, gives you a nice clock widget displaying the time, along with the weather and upcoming calendar events. The developer promises a paid “Pro” version is also in the works, due out later this year with additional features and functionality. Have at it, folks. [Chronus on Google Play]

U.S. has to wait a little longer for Android 4.3 on the HTC One, exec says Sep 27th 2013, 19:51, by Phil Nickinson Updates for carrier-branded phones not expected by the end of September as hoped This probably shouldn't surprise anyone, but if you've got a carrier-branded version of the HTC One here in the good ol' U.S. of A., you can quit mashing that "Check for updates" button. While the unbranded (and European) versions of the M7 have been or are in the midst of being updated, as is the developer edition, the others look to miss HTC's self-imposed Sept. 30 deadline, according to HTC Exec Jason MacKenzie. The word about a month and a half ago was that they were "working hard" to get Android 4.3 and an updated Sense released to everyone by the end of September.  Lots of questions re 4.3 release for One. We r wrking hard (needs cert) to release 4.3 across all US, Canada skus by end Sept. Android 4.3 update rolling out to unlocked international HTC One owners Sep 27th 2013, 19:25, by Adam Koueider HTC has already been rolling out the Android 4.3 update to the developer and Taiwanese versions of the HTC One, and now unlocked international HTC One owners will be served with the same update. The update will bring improved low light photos, Bluetooth LE and OpenGL ES 3.0 support, Sense 5 enhancements and more. Unfortunately, owners of the US or Canadian carrier versions of the HTC One will have to wait a little longer as HTC’s Jason Mackenzie has tweeted to reveal that the update will “slightly miss” the deadline for the end of September. Mackenzie promises to keep HTC One owners updated, but it’s not quite clear what “slightly miss” means in this case, so it might be a few more weeks before HTC rolls out the update to the rest of the HTC One variants. 3 days left on 4.3 deadline for US/Canada HTC One. T-Mobile's next big changes may include refurbished devices in-store Sep 27th 2013, 19:19, by Scott Webster T-Mobile’s Uncarrier strategy seems to be paying off for the carrier but that doesn’t mean they’re going to rest on their laurels. New rumors suggest a third phase of the Uncarrier initiative may include the stocking of refurbished devices in store. We’re not exactly sure what sort of problems this might cause or how inventory is stocked and replenished but, hey, whatever. T-Mobile could also do away with deposits at the time of purchase, or so says TmoNews. Reportedly, T-Mobile could differentiate between “well” qualified customers and all others. The former would enjoy the perks of not having to fork over some up-front dough. Those making the migration over from MetroPCS aren’t used to paying deposits so this move would keep them from walking. Also getting tossed in the mix is word that T-Mobile may also for free calls to Mexico. Keep in mind that none of these are confirmed by the carrier and may simply be wishful thinking snowballed into whispers. What do you say? Do any of these rumors speak directly to you? Samsung Galaxy S3, Note 2 to get Android 4.3 in November? Sep 27th 2013, 19:34, by Edgar Cervantes Rumors of Android 4.3 soon coming to the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 have been circulating the internet, but now we have a bit of proof. French carrier SFR has released a roadmap table with information about their devices’ upcoming OTA updates. According to SFR, the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 should be getting Android 4.3 Jelly Bean sometime in November-December. Now, we are not sure how long it will take our carriers to catch up. We know how American carriers can be and don’t expect most of them to be on time, but at least we know Samsung is almost ready to get things going. Odds are Nexus devices will be rocking Android 4.4. KitKat by then, but that doesn’t meanNote 2 and Galaxy S3 users shouldn’t be excited. It’s nice to see Samsung hasn’t forgotten its older-generation devices quite yet. Not to mention, it means your devices will be compatible with the Galaxy Gear! [SFR]

Samsung executive says the Galaxy Gear "lacks something special", and I agree Sep 27th 2013, 18:11, by Edgar Cervantes I have said it time and again: the smartwatch market is a sleeping giant, simply waiting for the manufacturer who will do it right. Naturally, we assume that a large manufacturer like Samsung (or Apple) would have the most chances – given their resources and expertise. This was simply not the case for Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, though, a smartwatch that failed to impress me one bit (see our hands-on for more). I am not alone when it comes to this stance. In fact, a Samsung executive is said to agree with me! The executive decided to stay anonymous (of course), but the source is reliable. “We’ve acknowledged that our Gear lacks something special. With more investment for user interface and user experience, Samsung devices will be better in terms of customer satisfaction.” There are many issues with the Galaxy Gear, and this comes from a person who is “overly excited” about smartwatches (just ask other Phandroid bloggers). First and foremost, the device is only compatible with Samsung devices; Android 4.3 Samsung devices, at that. This means that it is Only compatible with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 for now. This is simply ridiculous! We know Samsung holds most of the Android marketshare, but that continues to be one huge “if”. One good thing about Samsung’s name is partnerships, though. The device is set to launch with 70 apps, a number you can’t ignore when it comes to smartwatch support. But that is about the only cool thing about the Galaxy Gear. The camera is not necessary, the 315 mAh battery will give you a full day of battery life at best and the 1.63 inch LED display is bad for daylight use. At this point, I am putting all my attention on the Qualcomm Toq. The company no one ever expected to make a smartwatch totally left Samsung in the dust… Samsung! The Toq will feature a Mirasol display, 2-3 days of battery life, wireless charging, bundled bluetooth headphones, and more. It simply seems to be much better planned for good everyday use.
