| College Football 2012 goes live at Google Play Posted: 31 Aug 2012 03:24 PM PDT Perhaps you saw that Neverstill Mobile, parent company of Phandroid, released a nifty little football pick’em app for Android devices. If in addition to the pro game you like to keep an eye on what’s happening at the college level, we are introducing today College Football 2012. The premise of the app is the same premise as another Neverstill app providing a schedule for the NFL season: get instant access to your favorite team’s schedule as well as the schedules of all teams playing week in and week out. It’s a lightweight app that does exactly what it says and nothing more, which is the real beauty of it. You won’t have to navigate some bulky sports app to find dates and times for upcoming games, if the information is available at all. | LG E970 for AT&T clears the FCC Posted: 31 Aug 2012 02:50 PM PDT The LG E970, otherwise known as the LG Eclipse for AT&T, recently made a visit to the FCC. The device has been dubbed a “superphone” after previous leaks revealed a quad-core Krait CPU and 4.67-inch 720p HD display. The filing reveals the band 4 and 17 LTE support as well as approval for bands 2 and 5, though AT&T currently doesn’t operate on the latter pair. Also covered was the Eclipse’s NFC chip and HSPA+/UMTS/EDGE connectivity. Rumors place the phone as launching towards the end of October.

| Google Play ‘End of Summer’ sale sees popular apps marked down to $0.99 Posted: 31 Aug 2012 02:08 PM PDT Google is hopping aboard the Labor Day deals train with the launch of their “End of Summer” sale in the Google Play Store. Twenty apps and games, including among others the popular keyboard app SwiftKey, have been marked down to $0.99. If you’re in the mood for a bit of an apps shopping spree, this weekend looks like the time to let loose. Our guess is the sale will only last through the end of the long weekend, so act fast if you want to take advantage of some killer deals.

| Kyocera Rise now available from Virgin Mobile Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:19 PM PDT Starting today you can pick up the Kyocera Rise from Virgin Mobile in the US for $100 up front. The phone features a 3.5-inch display and full QWERTY keyboard as well as Android 4.0 powered by a 1GHz single-core Snadragon processor. Users get 2GB of internal storage plus a slot for microSD card. The phone carries a 3.2MP camera. A prepaid option, Virgin Mobile is offering the Rise alongside its $35/month unlimited data and messaging plan. Not too shabby. Right now the phone is only available online but will hit retailers next month.

| Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, Galaxy S2 Plus, and Galaxy Premier tipped Posted: 31 Aug 2012 12:35 PM PDT According to new rumors, Samsung will continue to plan its Galaxy line of Android smartphones with the introduction of the Galaxy S3 Mini, Galaxy S2 Plus, and Galaxy Premier. All three handsets fall into the lower tiers of the smartphone spectrum, with the GS3 Mini sporting a 4-inch display, dual-core CPU and 5MP camera. The Galaxy S2 Plus reads as more of a downgrade of the original than an actual improvement, with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLD Plus display and a single core CPU clocked around 1GHz. The Galaxy Premier is said to feature s similar spec sheet, save for a larger HD display at 4.65 inches. The handset will run Jelly Bean. [via DroidDog]

| Leaked Verizon docs suggest September 6 launch for Samsung Galaxy Stellar Posted: 31 Aug 2012 12:06 PM PDT We’re gleaning a few last minute details about Samsung Galaxy Stellar 4G LTE as the upcoming Verizon handset nears its launch. How soon could it be launching? According to newly leaked docs from within VZW, the phone will drop on September 6th. The documents also serve to give a pretty complete rundown of the handset’s specs, which include a 1.3GHz dual-core processor, 3.2MP camera, and Android 4.0. The phone’s “Starter Mode” is also mentioned. The Stellar mixes it up in terms of features, offering a mid-range phone that should retail for about $100 on contract. It’s definitely an interesting 4G LTE option to consider, at the very least. [via Engadget]

| No surprise: Samsung wants US injunction hearings moved up Posted: 31 Aug 2012 11:18 AM PDT A court schedule that pushes the next phase of the Apple v. Samsung patent trial back to December 6th isn’t sitting well with the company that won a majority of its infringement claims last week. Apple is urging Judge Lucy Koh to consider hearing arguments on injunctions facing eight devices at the same time that a decision will be made on the current ban facing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in late September. Surprisingly, the Tab 10.1 was found not to infringe on Apple design patents (though it was found to infringe upon several software patents) and is likely to see its sales ban lifted. Given the timing of the December hearings, Apple faces a situation that could still see Samsung benefiting from holiday sales of infringing devices. If Apple can’t get a ruling on the eight devices in question before then the company is asking that the court delay the September hearing on the Tab 10.1 until the later date, effectively keeping the injunction on the tablet in place. Did we mention that the end of the actual trial was really just the beginning of the long and drawn out legal process that likely will extend past the point that any of the infringing devices are considered relevant in the marketplace. Still, the end result will play a crucial role in Samsung’s mobile business moving forward. [via Electronista]

| Sont Xperia T and Xperia J launching Sept. 5 in the UK, according to retailer Posted: 31 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT According to UK retailer Carphone Warehouse, the recently announced Sony Xperia T and Sony Xperia J will be landing on store shelves September 5th. Sony suggested the handsets could launch shortly after announcement but provided few details. The Xperia T will be the company’s flagship device for the second half of the year, while the Xperia J takes up the entry-level position. Not dated was the Sony Xperia V, which was also announced at Samsung’s IFA press conference. Pricing details were not made available for the two devices, but Carphone Warehouse did reveal that the Sony Xperia Tablet S will retail for £329, though they have not committed to a release date. Rockstar has dropped its price to $.99, and for that price you’re getting one of the most iconic video games of the previous generation of PCs and consoles. Max Payne follows the DEA agent whose name is shared with the title of the game. As he is framed for murder he has to attempt to clear his name while dealing with some of the most evil and intimidating forces in the city, all the while having to deal with personal struggles of his past. | Samsung Galaxy Note 2 confirmed for Three and O2 in the UK Posted: 31 Aug 2012 06:57 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was only announced Wednesday, and we’ve already got information on where it’s headed first in the UK. Three issued a press release confirming their plans to carry the device, while Engadget has gotten confirmation that O2 will also carry it. We can’t imagine the folks at Vodafone and T-Mobile won’t eventually carry it, but they’re not willing to say anything at this time. If Samsung’s planning to push this device as much as they did the Samsung Galaxy S3 then we should expect this thing pretty much anywhere the sun shines. Read on for the short release from Three.

| Huawei introduces MediaPad 7 Lite mid-range tablet Posted: 31 Aug 2012 06:32 AM PDT With announcements regarding its high-end tablet out of the way, Huawei has also announced forthcoming availability of the brand new Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite. As the name implies, this tablet is seven inches in size and doesn’t pack quite the same punch as the MediaPad 10 FHD. It sports a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, and a 3.2 megapixel rear shooter. That is also accompanied by a VGA front-facing camera for video calling. As for its resolution, the press release says we have a “1024 x 600 IPS multi-touch 1080p high-definition display,” so we can’t be too sure what that means just yet. We’ve reached out for clarification, but we’ll go out on a limb and say the former resolution is correct, as is common for this screen size, for the time being. Read on for full press details.

| [Update] Grooveshark missing from the Google Play Store Posted: 31 Aug 2012 06:02 AM PDT Just two days after Grooveshark was reinstated in the Google Play Store, it appears the official app for the music streaming service has gone missing again. If you don’t remember, Grooveshark was originally removed from the Google Play Store because of copyright concerns with major record labels. It was later offered as a third party download up until three days ago when it came back to the Google Play Store. All of us rejoiced, but it appears that was about as short lived as it could get. We’ve reached out to Grooveshark to see what’s going on, and will update this article with any relevant information we can get. | Samsung Smart TVs to finally launch later this year with Google TV Posted: 31 Aug 2012 05:30 AM PDT While Samsung hasn’t been particularly hasty with jumping into the Google TV market, they’re no strangers to smart TVs. They were showing some new smart TVs off in Berlin today, and it looks like they were running Samsung-infused versions of Google TV. They’ll be looking to launch the Android-powered sets later this year, and Samsung will utilize Smart Hub as the central user interface for accessing television apps and services. As you’d expect Samsung has ported some of their apps from the smart TV operating system they currently use to Google TV, so you can expect most of that in these sets. Samsung was reportedly recorded saying Google TV and Apple TV were going to take a backseat to Smart TV, but it looks like they’ve had a change of heart since then. While Google TV hasn’t taken off like we’d hoped it would, another major player like Samsung alongside the likes of Sony, Vizio, LG, and more will hopefully spur some growth. | New processor is what took Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD so long to come, and it’s coming in September Posted: 31 Aug 2012 04:47 AM PDT The Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD has eluded the grips of many for quite some time. It was first unveiled back in February at Mobile World Congress, and after a series of promotional videos, in-the-wild shots, and other rounds it had to make it still has yet to come out about 6 months later. But Huawei’s confirmed that the 10.1 inch, 1080p goodness will be headed to retail starting this September to a variety of markets. It’ll feature a K3v2 Cortex-A9 1.4GHz quad-core processor which features a 16 core GPU. There’s also an 8 megapixel HD rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and more. There will also be 4G, 3G, and WiFi connectivity, as well as a keyboard dock that will give users a VGA and HDMI port when the tablet is safely nestled into it. Those in China are already enjoying it, while users in Germany, Sweden, Russia, Belarus, Korea, Bahrain, and Kuwait will see it starting in September.
