Samsung and Google to announce a pure stock Android Galaxy S4 "Google Edition" at tomorrow's Google I/O. While only rumor at this point, this could be the next best thing to having a "developer" edition of the Galaxy S4. Would you buy one?

Rumor: Google set to unveil Google Edition Galaxy S4 at I/O

According to Russell Holly of Geek.com, Google is gearing up to make a huge announcement tomorrow at I/O, completely out of left field. While we won’t see a new Nexus phone unveiled just hours from now, Holly is citing sources already at the developer conference that say we will see a “Google Edition” of the Samsung Galaxy S4 running stock Android.

Hardware wise, the Galaxy S4 is an absolute beast of a phone. A high-end processor, 5-inch full HD display, and fantastic camera are just a few of the hardware elements that make the S4 one of the best Android powered smartphones money can buy. Unfortunately, Samsung’s custom version of Android isn’t for everyone. The Google Edition of the Galaxy S4 would remedy that, not only giving consumers a chance to buy a non-Nexus stock Android device, but one with a removable battery and expandable storage as well.

How the Google Edition of the S4 would be sold, whether through Google Play or Samsung directly, is still a mystery. But supposedly it will work on T-Mobile.

As far as rumors go, this one is pretty out there. It’s strange that we haven’t heard anything about the Google Edition Galaxy S4 before now, some 12 hours until it’s supposed to be unveiled, but Holly and Geek.com have been on-point with Google related rumors in the past. There may be good reason to get excited for this one. Not long now until we know for sure.

    

NVIDIA SHIELD goes on pre-order for $349, ships in June

NVIDIA surprised everyone at CES with the announcement of their mobile gaming device Project SHIELD, and today they finally revealed the launch details. Fans who signed up to receive updates by clicking “Notify Me” on the SHIELD website will have an exclusive opportunity to pre-order starting today for $349. Pre-order for the general public will open on May 20th, and retail launch partners include Newegg, Gamestop, Micro Center, and Canada Computers. NVIDIA said SHIELD will ship “in June,” but they did not provide a specific date.

We were told that SHIELD would not be cheap, but the $349 retail price seems like a good value compared to other high-end Android devices with 5-inch displays. SHIELD will be the first product to ship with NVIDIA’s new Tegra 4 chip, so it will be the fastest Android device we have ever seen. The open platform gaming system also has access to one of the largest ecosystems of games, including NVIDIA Tegra Zone, Google Play, and Steam (with optional GeForce game streaming).

It will be interesting to see how the SHIELD sells since it is such a unique Android product. Dedicated game consoles seems to be on the decline, but the SHIELD offers the pure stock Android experience and it is capable of so much more.

Samsung launching the ‘Androidbook’ in coming months? Google also working on TV and SmartWatch

Earlier in April, DigiTimes reported that Google will introduce an Android based notebook later this year, also Intel recently said that there will be a $200 Android notebooks as well. It seems the “Androidbook” is coming to real soon reality as KGI Securities analyst Mingchi Kuo is spilling some beans about Google’s upcoming Android devices.

He said that upgraded version of Nexus 7 is coming out at the upcoming Google I/O event, but along with that, he said that  an Android powered notebook, a new TV product, and a Google SmartWatch is on the list of the products Google will be releasing later this year. Have a look on what he said about the Androidbook:

Android Book – Android Book won't be introduced at the upcoming Google I/O as development of Android 5.0, which is targeted at NB, is incomplete. We think Android Book featuring Android.4x will be rolled out in the coming 3-4 months because some brand vendors, like Samsung (Korea), want to move first. But shipments will be limited as the current Android OS isn't well supported for laptops.

Also Google is working on an Apple TV competitor, which will be coming out a little late because of the transfer to a NVIDIA Tegra chip from TI OMAP.About the Google SmartWatch, it is coming soon and it will work alongside the recently introduced Google Glass.

Elusive White Nexus 4 shows off on leaked video

Here’s what we know: There’s probably a white LG Nexus 4 being released soon. It showed off in some pictures earlier in the week, and got interests piqued. Now, a video has been released that gives us a closer look at the supposed device. Have a look below:

The device made an appearance at a Dubai conference as a demo device, meaning we probably shouldn’t expect a retail release in the near future.

Apple sets sights on Samsung Galaxy S4 in patent infringement lawsuit

Apple currently has a pretty massive “anti-Android” lawsuit going, and they’re looking to add yet another device to their list of culprits. Apple says that:

Samsung recently released its newest smartphone, the Galaxy S4, which began shipping in late April 2013. Based on Apple's analysis of the Galaxy S4, Apple has concluded that it is an infringing device and accordingly intends to move for leave to add the Galaxy S4 as an infringing product. Upon the grant of such motion, Apple will eliminate (without prejudice) one of the Accused Products named herein, so that it will continue to accuse only 22 products of infringement at this stage of the litigation.

They say that they have ‘concluded that it [Galaxy S4] is an infringing device”, and plans to add it to the list of devices that includes the Galaxy Note / Note 2, Note 10.1, Galaxy S2, and Galaxy S3. This isn’t the first time Apple has aimed directly at Samsung for supposed copyright infringement, and this set of hearings is set to start next Spring.

All 4 major US carriers now part of ‘It Can Wait’ texting campaign

We all know how dangerous texting and driving is (I’m looking at you, corporate bigwig in the fast lane in 8AM traffic). Now, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have joined AT&T in their “It Can Wait” anti-texting-and-driving campaign. The new co-operative initiative, something practically unheard of in the mobile world, will launch on May 20th with a co-branded campaign. The platform will allow users to hear real stories of people who’s lives have been impacted by the ramifications of texting and driving. We’re looking at some pretty heart wrenching stories, such as a 5-year-old boy who was paralyzed from the waist down after being involved in an accident with a young woman who was texting while driving in 2010.

According to a study commissioned by AT&T, up to 49% of people have admitted to texting during their commutes, compared to a lower 43% of teenagers admitting it. Remember, folks, the consequences of texting and driving are very real, and very dangerous.

Android support for Blackberry Enterprise Management Suite announced in BEM 10.1

If you’re part of a corporate environment, chances are pretty hefty that you’re familiar with Blackberry’s Enterprise Management Suite. Now, however, Blackberry has announced that along with Enterprise Service 10.1, there will come support for Android devices. In other words, your company will be able to roll out and manage Android devices just as easily as it can with Blackberries.

Highly anticipated NVIDIA Shield starts preorders on May 20 for $349, set to ship in June

NVIDIA made quite a stir at CES this last January with the announcement of what they called “Project Shield”,  a new gaming device powered by Android. Well, now it seems they’re dropping the “project” status, as NVIDIA has announced that prospective gamers can preorder their device starting May 20th for $349.

From what we see, official preorders will start on that date – however, for those eager to get their grubby paws on a preorder slot, they can head to NVIDIA’s site to sign up for email updates for NVIDIA about Shield using this link. Doing this will be allowed to do their preorder starting today. As mentioned, all preordered units are set to ship in June, which is also when full retail availability will start.

Also, if you use an NVIDIA graphics card in your gaming desktop (GeForce GTX 650 or higher) you’ll also be streaming titles using Steam. The device itself will come preloaded with  Sonic 4 Episode II, and Expendable: Rearmed. In the Play Sotre, you’ll see Dead Trigger and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In addition, NVIDIA has five new titles set to go for Shield: Broken Age and Costume Quest from Double Fine,Flyhunter: Origins from Steel Wool Games, Skiing Fred from Dedalord Games and Chuck’s Challengefrom Niffler.

If you’re wanting to see the device before buying, however, brick  and mortar shops like Micro Center, GameStop, and Canada Computers will be on board for launch day. As far as online buying when the time comes, you’ll be looking at NVIDIA’s official site, as well as Newegg.
