Google Play Weekly Episode 3: Play Store passes up handhelds, new rules, and more! Aug 31st 2013, 05:46, by Joe Hindy Welcome to this week’s edition of Google Play Weekly! Over the course of the last week or so, we’ve seen some big game releases, some changes to the rules in the Google Play Store, and a new achievement for Google in the world of gaming. It’s been an exciting last 7 days, so check out the video below to hear more about it. Below are the stories mentioned this week as well as download links for the trending apps segment. Asphalt 8: Airborne gets launched to the Play Store to big applause and success. Utter! It’s a voice assistant app developed from the days before Google Now. It’s gotten a huge update and can actually use Google Now. Google Hangouts gets an update geared toward AT&T customers. Also, Google+ got an “awesome” update. The Google Play Store has changed the rules about what apps can and cannot do. It’s a big list and there are some things there people will like. Lastly, Google Play has surpassed handhelds like the PS Vita and Nintendo DS in terms of money. Now, only iOS makes more in the mobile/handheld gaming market than Android. Here are the trending apps. IDC lowers projected tablet estimates for 2013 due to wearable tech and bigger smartphones Aug 31st 2013, 02:45, by Jared Peters According to the latest IDC forecast, tablets may not reach their previously estimated 229 million units in 2013, but it’s probably not because of the reasons most people think. The experts seem to think that when a new wave of wearable tech hits the market, it’s going to have an affect on the tablet market. Not only that, but IDC believes that phones with larger screens are functioning as both phone and tablet for some consumers, which further reduces the need for tablets. Throw in the fact that aren’t very many new tablets that will be available for the holidays and it’s easy to see how the shipments may not be as high as what was originally expected. Now, to put this in perspective, the estimates are still sitting at around 227 million, so total units are only down about 2 million. The bigger picture here is to look at the trends of these tablets, though, not necessarily the shipment amounts. IDC has found that in mature markets, like the US, tablet sales are slowing down and losing market share to emerging markets such as Asia. Once the market gets so saturated, less new devices are going to be sold. Google's upcoming smartwatch has a secret ingredient; the purchase of WiMM labs Aug 31st 2013, 02:20, by Robert Nazarian I’m probably one of a select few that still wear a WiMM One smartwatch everyday. I love it, and so far, it’s the only smartwatch that does what I want. The only downside, and a big one, is that all support was stopped about a year ago. At that time, WiMM Labs, the maker of the watch, Tweeted the following… "During the summer of 2012, WIMM Labs entered into an exclusive, confidential relationship for our technology and ceased sales of the Developer Preview Kit (…) We'd like to thank all of our developers for their interest and willingness to experiment with our platform and look forward to exciting advances in the wearable market." It was never revealed who that “exclusive, confidential relationship” was. Many thought it was Apple, but it was actually Google. How it took so long to get out, I have no idea, but this is really good news. We know Google is readying a smartwatch, and WiMM can only enhance the offering. If you remember, back in XXX, the Financial Times reported that Google’s upcoming smartwatch is in the hands of the Android team, not X Labs. It just so happens that WiMM employees are assisting the team. If you want to get an idea of what the WiMM watch is like, check out  part 1 and part 2 of my review. I actually owe a third part in the series, but the closure kind of soured me. Galaxy Gear and/or Galaxy Note 3 teased by Samsung UK in Facebook contest Aug 31st 2013, 01:53, by Chris Smith Samsung Mobile UK has posted an interesting teaser on its Facebook page, offering users the chance to win "what will be unpacked" on September 4 in Berlin, Germany. So far, we know that the company will unveil the Galaxy Gear smartwatch and the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. But what is Samsung teasing on this particular occasion, the Galaxy Gear or the Galaxy Note 3? Here's what the page says: WIN WHAT WILL BE UNPACKED This September, Samsung will reveal something new and groundbreaking to the world. We're giving you the chance to win it as soon as it's released! Enter now for your chance to be one of the first to get your hands on the next big thing. All you have to do is 'like' this page. Then you can enter the prize draw! The Galaxy Note 3 isn't necessarily all that "new and groundbreaking" considering that we're simply looking at a next-gen Note version. So is the Samsung teasing the Galaxy Gear? Then again, can the Galaxy Gear be "the next big thing," or is Samsung teasing the Galaxy Note 3? Or is Samsung going to unveil any other products on September 4? Whatever the case, what's certain is that Samsung Mobile UK will offer what's going to be unpacked for free to one or multiple winners (that's not clear either at this time). Samsung Galaxy Note 3 tipped for Sept. 16th release, at least on Three UK Aug 31st 2013, 01:25, by Andrew Martonik Sony Xperia Z1 also expected for Sept. 24th launch We were already all but certain that the Galaxy Note 3 would make its debut at Samsung's IFA 2013 presentation, and a leaked carrier inventory system screen shows us Samsung doesn't have much longer to announce the device. The image you see above, given to Engadget, is purportedly from carrier Three UK and shows the upcoming releases for a few different devices including the Galaxy Note 3 and Sony Xperia Z1 (aka "Honami"). The Note 3 is pegged for September 16th, with the Xperia Z1 coming right after on September 24th. We can't be sure that the release dates will be these exact days for all carriers and regions, but given that we dive right into IFA next week and a major UK carrier is ready to sell the phones quickly thereafter, we have to assume they'll be on sale quickly. Sony NSZ-GU1 Google TV spotted at the FCC, sort-of looks like a Chromecast Aug 31st 2013, 01:15, by Chris Smith A fresh FCC filing reveals a new Sony Google TV version – model number NSZ-GU1 – which sort-of looks like a Chromecast, but that doesn't mean it will necessarily offer similar functionality. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the FCC application, but it looks like the available documentation has been updated to offer plenty of images and even a user manual. We’ll also add that the device is yet to be unveiled by Sony. According to the information available, the NSZ-GU1 will use a MHL/HDMI port to connect to a TV, just like the Chromecast does, but the device is expected to offer Google TV features. The entire thing looks rather strange, especially when compared to the Chromecast, which is a much simple-looking dongle that's almost hidden away once connected to a TV. The NSZ-GU1 measures 109 x 42 x 22.5 mm and weights 70g. Comparatively, the Chromecast is significantly smaller, measuring 72 x 35 x 12 mm and weighing only 34g. When it comes to specs and features, the NSZ-GU1 will offer a low-power Marvell De3108 SoC, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of memory, 720p video support Wi-Fi b/g/n, USB support, IR support and Bluetooth 3.0. Considering that the NSZ-GU1 has already hit the FCC, we would expect it to be launched in the near future, although we don't have any release dates or pricing details for you at this time.
