Cyanogen teases "exciting news ahead" for upcoming Oppo N1 announcement Sep 20th 2013, 17:11, by Chris Chavez Relatively new to the Android smartphone market, Chinese manufacturer Oppo has always been refreshingly developer friendly when it came to their current flagship — the Oppo Find 5. A beautiful blend of premium build quality and high-end specs, Oppo had no problems creating their own developer forums where tech-savvy users can get the support they need to help flash new software builds or custom ROMs. Oppo’s been teasing their latest flagship, the Oppo N1, on their site, where the big reveal is set for Sept 23rd. Moments ago, they updated their Oppo N1 landing page with a special announcement from Steve Kondik, better known around the circles as Cyanogen. In the video, Kondik teases “exciting news ahead”, with September 23th being the date of the big reveal.

PlayStation 4 Android companion app demoed, comes with second screen functionality Sep 20th 2013, 15:49, by Chris Smith Taking the stage at the Tokyo Game Show 2013 earlier this week, Sony has demoed its PlayStation 4 companion app for mobile devices, which will offer second screen functionality to users, among other features. The application will work on Android and iOS devices and will let you control the console by simply touching the "Connect to PS4" button found inside the app. In addition to controller-like features for some of the future PS4 games, the application will also give users access to the PlayStation Network environment, as they'll be able to check out achievements, trophies and chat with friends or accept invites for multiplayer games. Users that will install the app on their mobile devices will also be able to check out the activity of their friends in the "What's New" section and post updates on Twitter and Facebook from within the app. The PlayStation 4 console will launch later this year, so it's actually not really surprising to see Sony introduce an application that can connect a player's game world with his or her mobile experience. After all, Microsoft does it as well for its Xbox – with the SmartGlass app – so we have definitely expected Sony to include some sort of mobile integration for its new gaming console. However, it's not clear at this time when the mobile app will be available for download. We’ll also remind you that Sony already has an official PlayStation app in the Google Play Store. Sprint launches early upgrade program 'One Up' Sep 20th 2013, 16:41, by Edgar Cervantes Sprint is a little late to the early upgrade program game, but better late than never. One Up was made official today and you can all sign up! It’s rather simple. And as we mentioned in this week’s podcast – it’s not a bad deal at all. What is One Up by Sprint? The One Up program allows you to upgrade ever year (12 months). One only needs to pay for the device in 24 equal monthly payments. There is no finance fee or down payment. To top it off, Sprint is offering a 15-dollar discount on their Unlimited Everything plan. This makes up for the subsidy, since you are pretty much paying for the phone without their help. It also helps alleviate some of the hassles of paying the monthly fee. In reality, that now $65-dollar plan will end up being close to a hundred (of course, depending on the device you get). What do I need to do to sign up for One Up? You can now sign up for One Up if you are ready to get your next device, but first you may want to know a few details. The program does have its tricky parts. New customers will, of course, have to go through the usual credit check. Existing customers can sign up right away, but they have to turn in their phone (must have purchased it at least 12 months before). Customers with an available upgrade don’t need to hand their device over. One Up not available on pre-orders. Are you signing up? Tech junkies and gadget lovers are loving these new early upgrade programs, but we know more than a few of you are not as fond of them. Omate TrueSmart Kickstarter wraps with one million in funding Sep 20th 2013, 15:58, by Robert Nelson It may not have been the $10 million plus we saw from the Pebble smartwatch, however the folks at Omate have wrapped up their TrueSmart watch Kickstarter this morning with more than $1 million in funding. They have closed things out with $1,032,352 coming from 4,378 backers. This of course, was towards their initial goal of $100,000. Anyway, as the Omate TrueSmart Kickstarter closed well over that initial goal — there were quite a few bonus items that were added as stretch goals. Some of those items included Sapphire Crystal, 720p video recording, the Flesky Invisible Keyboard, an extra battery, Sonic Emotion Absolute 3D technology and more than a handful of extra clock faces. There were also some options to bump up the amount of RAM, going from 512MB to 1GB. But all those extra points aside, the TrueSmart is intended to arrive as a step above the current line of available smartwatches. Basically, the Omate TrueSmart is more of a smartphone on your wrist as opposed to only being a second display to get notifications. The watch will arrive running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and sporting a 1.54-inch (240 x 240) capacitive display, dual-core 1.3GHz Cortex A7 processor, 4GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 600 mAh battery and 5 megapixel camera. The watch will also have GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and a microSIM card slot for 3G connectivity. Anyway, while the Kickstarter period has come to a close, we now look towards the future to see if Omate will be able to hold to those promised delivery times. Assuming that is the case, developer units should begin arriving in October with other backers receiving their watches in November and December. Otherwise, the folks at Omate have also started to lay out a plan for moving forward. The details here consist of some promotion and plenty of work to get everything finished, built and shipped out to backers. There was also some talk of the Omate webstore opening at www.omate.com along with work on what will arrive as the “ultimate cool” Omate website. As of this writing the Omate webstore has yet to open, but as the folks at Omate have said, “the beginning is here.” Basically, it looks like they now have plenty of work ahead of them. We have seen plenty of leaks over the weeks and months, with some of the more recent showing the handset side-by-side with the Galaxy Note 3. As of today though, it looks like the One Max has been rooted and there is also some detail in terms of the camera features. Not to mention, the source that has shared these latest details was also speaking about the fingerprint sensor. According to details that were provided, that little square on the back of the handset is indeed a fingerprint scanner. The details on the sensor were on the light side, but it does appear as if it works as one would expect and/or hope. The leaker noted that he “spent a few days” with the setup and that the “fingerprint recognition rate is very high.” Otherwise, in terms of the root access, an image of the handset was provided and can be seen above. Perhaps slightly more interesting for some though, the camera features were also shown in a few images. These images can be seen below and are offering a look at a few available options. Some of the camera related goodies will include dual camera as well as Beauty Face, HDR and Panorama. The dual camera setup sounds similar to what we have seen from Samsung with Dual Shot. Basically, this would allow the user to simultaneously capture an image using the front and back camera. Despite some earlier speculation, it would also appear as if the One Max will not have a stylus. But again, this is all rumor and speculation and nothing is official until we hear it direct from HTC. We are expecting the One Max announcement to happen in October and in the meantime, is seems very likely that the rumors and leaks will only continue up until that point in time.
