Street View on Google Maps update adds Android 4.0 action and availability in South Korea and Russia Posted: 04 Apr 2012 04:44 PM PDT Along with the Gmail and Google Play Books update, Google has also added some Android 4.0 features to Street View on Google Maps. If you grab the latest update from the Google Play Store you'll now find the Android 4.0 action bar has been added. That wasn't the only addition for this release though as some new locales have been added to the mix. South Korea and Russia now have the capability to download Street View and come across all the funny and sometimes downright weird things found on Street View that we've all enjoyed. |
Hands-on with the HTC EVO 4G LTE Posted: 04 Apr 2012 04:31 PM PDT When we're in New York, we know we're in for a treat, and tonight was no exception: HTC and Sprint held a little gathering tonight in Midtown to unveil their latest collaboration, the EVO 4G LTE. The next big thing to hit Sprint, the latest EVO lives up to the title of "next generation," with future-proof (ha!) specs that will at least keep us satisfied through the summer. This device is very much Sprint's version of the One X, and the specs prove it. Up front you've got a stunning 4.7-inch HD super LCD display with 720p resolution that will blow your socks off. Seriously, everyone, it's really nice. 'Round back you've got an 8 MP camera that HTC swears can replace your DSLR, and if shutter times and handling mean anything, they might be on to something. Underneath the hood we've got a 1.5 Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor pushing along HTC's latest Sense 4.0 (check out our guide here) atop Ice Cream Sandwich, which we expect to translate to pretty impressive everyday performance. Hit the break for our impressions. |
HTC EVO 4G LTE pre-orders start May 7, $200 with contract Posted: 04 Apr 2012 03:19 PM PDT If you're interested in getting your very own HTC EVO 4G LTE (and we can't blame you, it looks like a hot one), you can pre-order one from Sprint on May 7. Checking in at $200 with a two-year agreement, you'll have a phone that Sprint is calling their "new gold standard", and features and specifications like a dual-core S4 CPU, NFC with Google Wallet, and a micro SDcard slot will make just about any Android enthusiast fall in love. We're itching to get one to play with ourselves, and it looks like Sprint has another winner on their hands with the EVO 4G LTE. So, anyone going to be laying down some dollars come May 7? Sprint announces the HTC EVO 4G LTE Posted: 04 Apr 2012 02:41 PM PDT Sprint has unleashed their beast this evening, announcing the HTC EVO 4G LTE. It's an Ice Cream Sandwich device, much resembling the HTC One X, with a few welcome changes -- including micro SDcard and Google Wallet support. The specs are no slouch, with a dual-core Snapdragon S4, a 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 screen, a hefty 2,000 mAh battery, and of course LTE support. Of course, all the features we expect from an HTC One series device are present as well, including the advanced camera hardware and software, Beats audio, and the all-new Sense 4.0. All-in-all, we have a phone very much like the HTC One X, with a slightly different (yet still stylish) look, with a few very important things to differentiate it -- the kickstand, a microSD card slot, Google Wallet, and a dedicated camera button. It looks like Sprint has a real winner on their hands here, and a very worthy successor to the EVO 4G name. Hit the break for the Sprint press release. Specifications | Gallery | Forums |

Samsung Conquer 4G software update now available from Sprint Posted: 04 Apr 2012 01:17 PM PDT A new software update is currently rolling out to Samsung Conquer 4G owners on Sprint. This updated is noted as just a security fix (see: CarrierIQ removal) for the device but one other thing to make note of with this release is the fact that Sprint has removed the Magic, Smoke, Many, Maps, Nexus, Spectrum, Water, and Waveform live wallpapers from the updated labeled as FC17. If you're not seeing the update as of yet, it will be along within the next 10 days due to how Sprint rolls out updates. Source: Sprint |
Samsung Galaxy Note in ceramic white now arriving on multiple Canadian carriers Posted: 04 Apr 2012 12:26 PM PDT Although the Samsung Galaxy Note has been out in Canada for quite some time now, there was no sign of the ceramic white version appearing until a few days ago. Since then, Samsung has issued a press release announcing the availability of the device across Canada with TELUS, Bell and Rogers all having now laid out their plans for launch. TELUS is first out the gates with the white version being available today while Bell will follow up on April 10th with their release. Not one to miss out on the celebrations, Rogers will have their version available " as early as next week” according to a tweet they sent out. The TELUS version is available for $200 with a three-year contact and $750 no-term. Bell will be selling their version for $200 with a three-year contract and $730 no-term. Google's Project Glass shows vision of wearable mobile tech Posted: 04 Apr 2012 09:56 AM PDT Rumors that Google may be working on a wearable HUD-based mobile device have been circulating for a few months now, and today the project has been revealed to the public for the first time. Project Glass is its name, and currently it's being developed at Google's secretive X Lab, or Google[x], to give it its full name. The concept designs and demo video on Project Glass's Google+ page show sleek, stylish glasses that look like something right out of the Deus Ex universe. There's a metal frame for support, with a chunkier, plastic area and HUD (likely where the actual electronics are stored) near the right eye. In an introductory post, the the Project Glass team says it's aiming to create technology which can be "there when you need it, and get out of your way when you don't." A demo video shows off possible uses for the tech, including messaging, navigation, video chat, social networking and photography. At this stage the team says it's looking for feedback and input from the public, and there's no information on any actual products which may spring from this project. When they do arrive, though, it's only natural that they'd run Android in some form or other. We'll be watching Project Glass with interest as Google IO approaches, we're it's possible we'll learn more about this exciting new tech. It's official folks -- we are living in the future. We've got the first video of Project Glass after the break, along with more photos of people with crazy futuristic eyewear. Source: Project Glass |
Gmail app update brings ICS features to Honeycomb Posted: 04 Apr 2012 09:55 AM PDT Google has updated the official Gmail app for Android today, with assorted changes for Android phones and tablets running Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb. The most significant changes are for Android 3.2 tablets -- Honeycomb now gets access to a few handy features which until now have been reserved for ICS. These include swiping between messages, and a shortcut in the top left corner for selecting recent labels. Honeycombers also the ability to customize the way Gmail notifies you about mail with different labels. Google hasn't forgotten that the majority of Android phones are still on Gingerbread or Froyo, however, and for them, this update will deliver performance improvements and a new labels API for third-party app developers. Hit that Google Play Store link and head to "My Apps" to grab your update. |
Dropbox referral bonuses doubled for free and paying users Posted: 04 Apr 2012 08:50 AM PDT Cloud storage provider Dropbox has just doubled the referral bonus it gives users for referring friends to the service. Previously Dropbox referrals resulted in a bonus of 250MB for both the referrer and the new sign-up, but from today that's been increased to a more substantial 500MB. Similarly, the maximum amount of storage users can earn through referrals has been upped from 8GB to 16GB. If you're a paying user, that's doubled again to 1GB per referral, up to 32GB total. There's also good news for anyone who's already referred a bunch of people -- your bonuses from those referrals will also be doubled, so you'll likely see your Dropbox allowance increase a little. Dropbox continues to offer generous amounts of storage for users willing to plug its services to friends, or help with the testing of new features. Recently launched an automatic camera upload feature, and credited testers with 500MB for their first upload, as well as 500MB more for each 500MB of automatic uploads. The company's also partnered with some leading smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung and HTC. The HTC One X and One S launche tomorrow with Dropbox built-in, with an extra 23GB of storage for HTC One users. |

SwiftKey 3 beta starts to make the spacebar obsolete Posted: 04 Apr 2012 07:00 AM PDT SwiftKey -- the Android Central 2011 keyboard of the year -- has declared war on the spacebar. Never mind that its April Fool's joke actually was to introduce the world's longest spacebar. The latest update to SwiftKey -- dubbed SwiftKey 3 -- introduces, among other features, Smart Space. Traditionally, Android keyboards use the spacebar as a means to select a suggested word. Or, perhaps, to put a space in a sentence. Or to insert a period at the end of a sentence. Smart Space takes advantage of SwiftKey's Fluency prediction engine and goes a step further than any other keyboard we've used. You no longer have to put spaces between words when typing. (It does still do the traditional space and punctuation thing, though.) OK, so that's nottosayyouwantotypelikethisforanextendedperiodoftime. But for small groups of words, SwiftKey 3 can take something like "jerryistheneckbeardking" and turn it into "Jerry is the neckbeard king," all without you having to do anything but type the letters. We've been using SwiftKey 3 for several weeks now, and the results really are remarkable. Other additions in SwiftKey 3 are two new themes. There's "Cobalt," which matches SwiftKey's redesign, and "Holo," which was voted on by its VIP community. And we're only half-joking about getting rid of the spacebar. It's actually been made a little bigger in this release. Punctuation has been moved around, too, with the comma, period, question mark and exclamation point all sharing a key. (Some of us aren't too thrilled with that move.) Seven more languages have been added -- Korean, Estonia, Farsi, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Serbian -- for a total of 42. You've really got to try this one out to believe it. One slight catch here -- SwiftKey 3's still in beta, and you can only get it through their VIP community. So hit the link below and give it a shot. It's available for tablets and smartphones. Demo video's after the break. Download: SwiftKey VIP community |

Leaked HTC EVO One photos confirm kickstand and chassis design Posted: 04 Apr 2012 04:44 AM PDT Remember how we told you the HTC EVO One would have a kickstand, a black and red chassis design and HTC One XL-like internals? Well look what's just shown up -- pictures of the HTC EVO One, sporting a kickstand and a black and red chassic. And if the reports from Droid-Life are accurate, the same internals we told you about, too. It's also worth noting that the device in these pictures looks an awful lot like that leaked press photo that was doing the rounds yesterday. The images, which leaked out hours before HTC and Sprint are due to launch the thing at an event in New York City. We'll be there, of course, bringing you full coverage of the latest addition to both the HTC One and EVO families. In addition to a chunky design reminiscent of previous EVOs, we're expecting the HTC EVO One to include a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip, 1GB of RAM, Beats Audio and LTE connectivity. How to install CyanogenMod 9 on your TouchPad - in plain English Posted: 04 Apr 2012 04:25 AM PDT So you took advantage of one of the various fire sales and picked up an HP TouchPad. Cool -- when the price is right it's a great tool and a great toy to play with. We know a good many of you guys grabbed one with the full intention of installing Android on the thing, specifically CyanogenMod. We also know it's a good bit different than flashing a zip file through recovery, and not the most user-friendly operation in the world. The folks over at webOS Nation are here to help. Ryan has gathered all the required tools and information to help you get 'er done, and has one heck of a detailed walk through ready for you to read, read again, ask questions, then try. We know sometimes just listing the steps isn't good enough, and Ryan takes the time to lay it all out and tell you what's going on, which is always a great way to handle tutorials when they have steps that could ruin your hardware. If you're ready to ditch webOS and install some Ice Cream Sandwich on your TouchPad, give it a look. Those fellows over at webOS Nation know their stuff. Late-night poll: How do you use a stylus? Posted: 03 Apr 2012 11:00 PM PDT Call it a stylus, call it an S-Pen, call it what you will -- styli are making a comeback. They used to be standard issue with a smartphone, until a fellow in a black turtleneck who had a huge influence on technology said we didn't like them anymore. But that was then, this is now. Styli are coming back because they're useful in a lot of cases. Whether it's annotating notes, just cruising through the UI, or playing Draw Something, you'll see more and more people using one with their smartphone. So what about you guys? We figure you all have your finger on the pulse of all things Android, so we want to know what, when, and how you use a stylus. Hit the poll up, let us know! |
Instagram app has smartphone users divided, show your support for #TeamAndroid Posted: 03 Apr 2012 10:09 PM PDT So it seems that iOS users on Twitter are in a bit of an uproar, and this time it's because Instagram has made it's way to Android. Yes, it's as silly as it sounds, and no, we're not making this up. There's a clear divide, with iOS users showing support for #TeamiPhone, and Android users pledging allegiance to #TeamAndroid. It's a bit comical seeing how upset some users are, all over an app that makes bad pictures and shares them with your friends. We're not knocking the app, as it pretty much works as intended (some folks want to share bad pictures -- go figure), it's just the way the Internetz-at-large is acting that's a bit silly. We're not going to fight -- we know #TeamAndroid is the shiz. We know that you know #TeamAndroid is the shiz. But if you want to join in the fun and debate a little, here's a picture that should |
Ice Cream Sandwich for the AT&T Galaxy Note leaked Posted: 03 Apr 2012 08:56 PM PDT The folks over at RootzWiki got their hands on a leaked build of Ice Cream Sandwich for the AT&T Galaxy Note (I717). First reports are pretty good, with the few bugs easy to work around. RootzWiki notes the list of features as:
It's the same sort of leak we saw recently for the Skyrocket, which means it's a Windows only affair until someone get's a flashable version out of it. It also hits your flash counter, so be aware of warranty issues if you give it a try. With the unexpected popularity of the Galaxy Note, we're pretty certain a version for folks who would rather flash things from recovery. We have no idea when the official version will be ready for release, so if you are itching for ICS this may be your only chance for a while. Grab it, and follow the directions closely, from the source link. Source: RootzWiki |
More factory images for the Nexus S released Posted: 03 Apr 2012 07:53 PM PDT A few days ago we saw the very first factory images for the Nexus S posted by Google. Previously you had to use a community-supplied image to go all the way back to 2.3.4 and then manually flash the updates. It was a pain, and we're glad that Google and the hardware vendors got it all worked out. Earlier today, three more factory images for the Crespo were released, including 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich for the i9020a. Unfortunately, users of some Nexus S models still aren't seeing any ICS love. The sojuk -- the Korean m200 model -- has a 2.3.6 image available for download, and the Sprint version -- model d720 or sojus -- has the 2.3.7 image available as a "reference only" download. We're not sure what's happening with versions other than the i9020t "world version", but at least the model that works with AT&T is up-to-date. I still love the Nexus S. I destroyed mine (water damage sucks) and am looking to replace it. Yes, I can use just about any Android phone available and really want my Nexus S back. But it's soon out of warranty, and if you're the type that has to have the latest just root the thing and do it. We've got all the help you would need in the forums, and now with factory restore images you could just roll back and relock it if things go awry. Source: Google. More: Android Central forums |
