Posted: 27 Feb 2012 04:00 PM PST In the era of data caps, throttling, and falsely advertised "unlimited" data plans, quite a few users have to keep track of their monthly data usage. ICS has a nice data usage chart, along with a few alert options, to help with this. But in reality, the average user doesn't know the difference in 20MB and 200MB when it comes to mobile data. Just how many web pages can a user load with x amount of data usage? Onavo aims to help with this, as they've just introduced Onavo Extend, an app exclusively made for ICS devices, both smartphone and tablet alike. Onavo Extend builds on Onavo's existing data usage monitor, adding a few spiffy new features, like the utilization of Google's WebP image format, which creates massive data savings on images, without sacrificing the quality of those images. Users can navigate between the last week and the last month of data usage, to see how everything is broken down. While it's exclusive to Ice Cream Sandwich, the app itself does have a very sleek look to it. So without further ado, ICS users can download Onavo Extend for free from the Android Market by using the box below. Not on the latest version of Android? You can still try out Onavo's Data Usage Monitor app. How do you track your data usage? Do you worry about going over every month, and being throttled or charged overage fees? Posted: 27 Feb 2012 02:02 PM PST We've seen some amazing products this year at Mobile World Congress from companies like Huawei and HTC. Now it's time for Asus to shine at this mega event with their new offerings, as they told us. The first thing Asus did was change the name of their tablet line to "Transformer Pad," and they introduced the Infinity Series under this line. The Infinity Series offers high end tablets with either Tegra 3 or Snapdragon S4 processors. Asus introduces two new tablets at MWC under the name “Transformer Pad” originally appeared on AndroidGuys. First, we have the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity 700 series, or just the TF700T for short. As far as the specs go, users can either get it with a Qualcomm MSM 8960 Snapdragon S4 processor with an LTE radio, or the Tegra 3 version, which is available in Wi-Fi only models. 3G/4G versions will feature S4 chip. So basically, if you want a Tegra 3 version, you'll have to live without those 4G speeds. Other goodies include an 8MP f/2.2 camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass 2 display, 1GB of RAM, and an HDMI port. In true Asus style, the tablet comes with its own keyboard dock as well. The next tablet is the Asus Transformer Pad 300 series, which is actually the TF300T, a tablet we saw a few weeks ago. Asus is calling it a "stylish and affordable" tablet. It's packing an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a 10.1-inch 1280x800 IPS display, and it will be launched in WiFi and LTE versions as well. It has a battery life of 10 hours, which can be extended to 15 hours with the optional keyboard dock. Asus will make it available in red, blue, and white. With that being said, we're fairly impressed with Asus and what they've brought to the table at MWC, but we want to hear from you. Are these tablets what you were hoping for? Posted: 27 Feb 2012 02:00 PM PST After the announcement of two new tablets, Asus decided let the cat out of the bag and introduce the Asus Padfone, which was introduced by them last year. It's the first device to feature a phone/tablet hybrid form factor. We reported that Asus would be launching it at MWC, and here it is. Let's start with the smartphone itself, which comes with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display, Snapdragon's new dual-core S4 chip along with an Adreno 225 GPU, Ice Cream Sandwich, an 8MP rear camera with an LED flash and f/2.2, a VGA front-facing camera, and decently-sized 1520mAh battery. It will be available from 16 to 64GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD). Now, the optional 9.2mm thick Padfone tablet will, according to Asus, increase the battery life nine-fold. It comes with a stylus, which doubles as a Bluetooth headset for receiving calls, which we thought was pretty awesome. The tablet can also dock into a keyboard, much like the Asus Transformer line. Asus plans to market and sell several accessories that extend the usability of the Padfone into infinity and beyond.Asus announced that the Padfone will ship in April, but was mum on pricing for the devices and accessories. More on this as it develops. So, are you looking forward to the Padfone? How much do you think Asus will charge for a phone that docks into a tablet, that docks into a keyboard? Posted: 27 Feb 2012 01:14 PM PST A few hours ago, a leaked shot confirmed that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Note 10.1 at Mobile World Congress, but we didn't know that it will be announced along with the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi Player. The tablet is part of the Galaxy Note family, featuring Samsung's S Pen stylus for drawing, note-taking, highlighting, and more. Samsung announces Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy S 4.2 MediaPlayer originally appeared on AndroidGuys. Aside from the S Pen, the Note 10.1 is nearly identical in terms of specs to the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 that was announced yesterday. We're still trying to figure out what Samsung is trying to do here by introducing tablets that aren't much different from their predecessors. Moving along, Samsung is also keeping an eye on their media player line, as they introduced the Samsung Galaxy S 4.2 Wi-Fi MediaPlayer. It comes with a 1GHz processor, 4.2-inch WVGA screen, 2MP rear camera, and a front-facing VGA camera. It will be launched in 8GB and 16GB versions, and both will feature microSD expansion up to 32GB. It's running on Gingerbread, sadly, but it has Android Market support to make up for it. This player will be an amazing device for people who are looking for a media player for fun and entertainment. No word on launch dates for either of these devices, but we don't think it'll be that far off. So who's excited by the Galaxy Note 10.1? Anyone planning to grab a Galaxy S 4.2 MediaPlayer? Posted: 27 Feb 2012 10:12 AM PST One of the dangers of entering the tech market with a new product is the necessary adaptation that other manufacturers or developers will have to make to support your product. This is especially true in the processor market, where many software and firmware companies of entrenched themselves in developing for what already exists. Fortunately, Intel is already a well-known manufacturer with a great lineup of upcoming hardware, and it appears that they're going to get the backing that they need. Gameloft, arguably one of the biggest game developers on mobile platforms, has announced that its more beloved HD games will be brought over and optimized for the Intel-based smartphones and tablets. These include (so far) Gameloft bringing its most popular HD games to Intel smartphones and tablets originally appeared on AndroidGuys.
What do you think of Intel's chipset? Will it be a good contender to the old guard that's already settled in? Let us know in the comments! Posted: 27 Feb 2012 06:54 AM PST Thus far, this Mobile World Congress is proving that Chinese handset makers are not second-tier mobile phone companies. Huawei introduced a sexy tablet and three new smartphones, one which is world's fastest phone according to the manufacturer. Now another famous Chinese brand, ZTE, has officially announced the phone we all were looking forward to. ZTE intros the quad-core, Android 4.0 “Era’ originally appeared on AndroidGuys. We expected that ZTE would bring a quad-core to MWC, and here we are a few days later with a ZTE Era. You may remember that it appeared in wild only a few days ago with Tegra 3 and Icera HSPA+ modem. Good news, all these goodies are still there...and more! Introduced as ZTE's first quad-core phone, it comes with a 4.3-inches display with 960 x 540 pixels resolution, 8GB of internal memory with microSD card slot, and there is HD Voice and Dolby sound processing as well for your entertainment. The device is only 7.8mm thick and ZTE will be bringing it out by second half of this year. Well, that's an impressive piece of work by ZTE. Anyone looking forward to this Tegra 3 monster? Posted: 27 Feb 2012 06:34 AM PST It's hardly even a story anymore that Android is now father of all the mobile operating systems. However, we still love to document the platform's growth and share the occasional milestone. You'll remember that just 2 months ago at Q42011 conference call, Andy Rubin confirmed that more than 700,000 Android devices activated each day. Andy Rubin: More than 850,000 Android devices activated daily; 450,000 apps in Market originally appeared on AndroidGuys. Andy is back with some new numbers, and just like every time the numbers are increasing...rapidly. Rubin happily confirmed that more than 850,000 Android devices are activated each day and, as of today, there are more than 450,000 apps available in the Android Market. Crazily impressive, no? As a reminder, at last year's MWC, Eric Schmidt shed some light on Android, he told us that 350,000 devices are activated daily and 150,000 apps are in the market. When compared to last year figure, that's an increase of total 250%. I am pretty sure that these numbers will be keep increasing and increasing, so Android fanboys, what are your thoughts about it? Tell us in the comment box below. We've been anxiously anticipating the "1 million per day number" for Google IO later in June and this certainly has us feeling like we're on pace for the figure. Posted: 27 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST We've just gotten a tip about a potential privacy issue with the SoundHound app, a popular music service that users can download from the Market. Apparently, the app transmits a user's exact location, along with unique device IDs and Google account information back to SoundHound's servers, and potentially to third-party servers, when the app starts. This also occurs when the device is rebooted, provided that the user has a SoundHound widget on their homescreen. Now I don't use SoundHound on any of my devices, but this is a major privacy issue. Not only does this affect users that have installed SoundHound, it also applies to devices that have the service preloaded. One reason this is a big issue is that SoundHound does request GPS access in the Market, but fails to notify users that it'll be forcibly transmitting their location to remote servers. Now, there is a note in the description that says:Note: Location is used to store where songs were discovered. It can be disabled from the Options menu. While this is true, it completely contradicts itself, because users have to open the app to disable this feature. In opening the app, they enable the transmission of their data, which defeats the purpose. SoundHound's own privacy policy confirms that they reserve the right to share this information with third parties: When you use the SoundHound applications, your mobile device supplies a unique identifier, which we use to associate search results, your bookmarks, and other information with your device. We improve the relevance of information provided in the applications using location information provided by your device, which you can choose to turn off. If your browser supplies location information (determined by your browser settings), we may use that information to improve the relevance of information provided by the web site. Content provided by advertisers and other third parties may be personalized in a similar manner.Furthermore, this transmission of personal data also contradicts another clause in its privacy policy Consistent with the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), we will never knowingly request personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of thirteen (13) without requiring parental consent. Any person who provides their personal information to SoundHound through the web site or applications represents that they are 13 years of age or older. So, if you have SoundHound installed on your device, this might be something you should look into. There's no logical reason that the app should collect and transmit personal data like this without the user's consent. It's inevitable that this will happen, because users have to open the app to disable it in the first place. Something fishy is definitely going on with SoundHound. We've submitted an inquiry to SoundHound about this issue, but they have yet to respond. More on this as it develops. Does this concern you? What other apps do you think could be transmitting your personal data without your knowledge? Sound off in the comments! Thanks to Simon for the tip!
