AT&T’s HTC One X bootloader locked for now Posted: 04 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT For the past few months HTC has been playing it pretty mod-friendly with HTCDev, their portal for all things developer and the home of HTC’s bootloader unlock tool. But those few who have access to AT&T’s LTE version of the One X have found that using the previously posted bootloader unlock simply won’t work – the unlock process returns a failure, and says that the American model isn’t allowed. Without an unlocked bootloader, custom ROMs will be difficult, and custom kernels will be almost impossible. The lack of an unlockable bootloader is a definite problem for advanced Android users. Along with the Galaxy S III, the One X is the top dog of Android 4.0 devices at the moment, and having it off-limits to custom ROM enthusiasts is a major disappointment. Motorola continues to keep their bootloaders locked on Verizon at the carrier’s insistence, and it’s more than enough reason for many Android enthusiasts to avoid otherwise great phones like the DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX. Noted modder Paul “Modaco” O’Brien was the first to spot the inconsistency. There’s been a lot of hue and cry since Paul’s post – most of it not actually coming from him. I’d like so sound a note of caution here: the AT&T version of the One X (known as the “One XL” when it debuts on other LTE markets) won’t be officially released for another two days. In the words of the great Ford Prefect, Don’t Panic. HTC has consistently unlocked all its phones for the better part of a year, including Verizon phones like the Rezound and even the original HTC Dream. Other AT&T phones have been unlocked as well. It may take them up to a few weeks to add AT&T’s One X to the list, but at this point we see no reason why they wouldn’t. Device Info

Kickstarter: Trigger Happy turns Android into a DSLR wizard Posted: 04 May 2012 05:37 PM PDT Professional photographers and enthusiasts know how essential a solid trigger system is for a successful shoot. We’ve seen versions of remotes for smartphones before, but most of them are limited to one or two DSLR cameras, and don’t add much more functionality than a standard button. Enter Trigger Happy, a smash-hit Kickstarter project that received its full funding today. Trigger Happy is a physical cable adapter and app combo that can control pretty much every function of your DSLR. Want a time-lapse photo set? Trigger Happy can do that. Want the perfect combination of exposure settings for a high dynamic range shot? Trigger Happy can do that, too. Just want a better interface for getting those full manual shots just right? Well, you get the idea. The magic happens thanks to a customized adapter and head unit that plugs into your phone’s headphone jack, with swappable cables for different camera standards. The Trigger Happy team plans to make hardware and apps for Android and iOS, and eventually even Windows and Mac. They’re planning to get the hardware out later this month to donators. Funding is over, so you can’t actually pick one up that fast (it got almost ten times its targeted goal!) but they should be available en masse later this year. For another massively successful Android Kickstarter project, check out the Pebble Smart Watch. |
HTC EVO 3D CDMA Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaked Posted: 04 May 2012 04:57 PM PDT There have been a surprising number of Ice Cream Sandwich builds released from the major manufacturers, but I honestly wasn’t expecting to see this one. A generous XDA member has posted the Android 4.0 ROM for the HTC EVO 3D, straight from the source and ready for flashing. This particulate software build is intended for Virgin Mobile’s US version of the phone, but it will work with The Now Network as well.
The leaked ROM is built on Android 4.0.3, so it’s just a little behind the times. And like the other Ice Cream Sandwich updates that we’ve seen from HTC, it feature Sense 3.6, which is noticeably distinct from the Sense 4.0 build seen on the new One family of phones. If you’re OK with a little extraneous branding, you could be rocking Ice Cream Sandwich on your unmodified EVO 3D tonight. Currently there are no obvious bugs in the software – everything seems to be functioning as expected. That said, this is probably not the final release, and if you flash it to your phone you might have to wipe it when the official ICS update is sent out to get back on the official release path. But that’s a small price to pay for some Android 4.0 goodness, right? Those of you who have used HTCDev to unlock your phone will have to find an original RUU before flashing. Of course, you can always try that One S ROM instead… Device Info

Asphalt 7: Heat teased by Gameloft – coming soon to Android Posted: 04 May 2012 04:27 PM PDT With all the craziness that was the Galaxy S III announcement yesterday, somehow we managed to pass up a sneaky post by @Gameloft that has me all sorts of excited. Asphalt 6 has to be in my top 5 or 10 list for best game on Android, and apparently we’ll be seeing Asphalt 7: Heat arrive soon. I have a feeling it will be launching at the end of May alongside the Samsung Galaxy S III.
Shown on screen during the Galaxy S III announcement (although I never saw it) was the image shown above. The first official teaser image for the follow up to the best racing game for Android. Asphalt 7: Heat we can expect even better graphics, intense races, and possibly a Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit style game with the “heat” on your tail as you race through the streets. We have no details at this time on a release date, cars, tracks, levels or anything else other than the teaser image posted above. With Gameloft showing this off for the first time along side Samsung at the Galaxy S III event most likely it will launch as an exclusive on the device, and hopefully arrive in the Google Play store sometime in June. That’s all we know until Gameloft sheds more details. With Asphalt 7, N.O.V.A. 3, and Men in Black all coming within the next month or so from Gameloft this looks to be a fun-filled summer for mobile gamers. |
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on sale for $299 Posted: 04 May 2012 04:24 PM PDT The big news for Samsung tablets today came in the form of pre-orders going up for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 2. The big news there is the lowered price, meeting Apple head-to-head at $399 for a 10-inch tablet. But what if you could get the original (and very, very similar) Galaxy Tab 10.1 for even less? If you’re OK with a refurbished unit and ordering from Wal-Mart, you can pick up a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for $299 – a full two hundred dollars off the retail price.
Sure, the replacement will be here by next week, and that’s probably why this tablet is so heavily discounted. But the Galaxy Tab 2 series adds very few new features to their earlier counterparts: aside from a slightly redesigned case, MicroSD card slot and Ice Cream Sandwich, the only major difference is the TI OMAP processors in place of NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core. The gray Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the 16GB version, which includes a 10-inch, 1280×800 screen, 1Ghz dual-core processor, and Honeycomb. Samsung has promised to upgrade the 10.1 to Ice Cream Sandwich, but hasn’t been particularly forthcoming with a date – though the more adventurous among you can try out the many Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs available, including CyanogenMod 9 and AOKP. Hey, it’s already refurbished – what do you need with a warranty anyway? Quantities are probably limited, so hurry if you want it. Device Info

Men in Black 3 Game for Android teaser video revealed Posted: 04 May 2012 04:05 PM PDT Men in Black III is set to be a popular movie this summer and along with it we can expect an awesome game for Android thanks to Gameloft and Sony. Earlier we reported that they’d partnered on a mobile game, and today Gameloft has released the first teaser trailer of MIB III for Android. We even get a few glimpses of some actual gameplay, or so we think.
The video from @Gameloft is short and sweet, and hints that the game is coming to Android and iOS soon, but after giving us a glimpse of some actual in-game footage they proceed to tell us “what you have just seen is NOT the Men in Black 3 game by Gameloft, this is just an experiment.” Pretty cool preview although the game looks a bit like the Sims if you ask me. The Men In Black game for Android will be a freemium title. Meaning it will be free to download and play but users can also make in-game purchases to go farther, unlock levels, or buy guns and such. From the few screenshots I was able to snatch and post below you can clearly see power-ups and share to social network features — all of which will probably earn you gold to buy more weapons. The Men in Black 3 game for Android by Gameloft will be available May 25th, the same day as the blockbuster title hits theaters nationwide. I wonder if this will actually be what the game looks like. Who is excited for the movie? And if so will you also play the game? |
Adobe Flash Player 11 updated with ICS video fixes Posted: 04 May 2012 03:19 PM PDT Today Adobe is pushing a quick and stealthy update to Flash Player 11.2 in the Google Play Store that is fixing some problems with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Although they’ve claimed to be dropping support, today’s update will fix some problems specifically related to Android 4.0 ICS, but you’ll have to dig for a change log from Adobe.
The what’s new section on the Play Store doesn’t reveal anything new as the version of Flash will vary from device to device (as will the changes) but the official change log at Adobe.com shows security patches and fixes for a critical security flaw on Android 2.3, 3.0, and 4.0 with the rest of the changes and improvements being related strictly to Android 4.0 ICS. Nothing too exciting folks but here’s the list:
The main changes are related to video pausing, and seeking (fast forward) on Android 4.0 ICS where users would see black bars instead of actual video for a few frames, as well as frame delays while seeking through video content. While the changes are minimal anything to make video playback smoother and easier is a plus right? Now I can continue watching anything and everything I want on my Galaxy Nexus. |
Some AT&T customers getting HTC’s One X early Posted: 04 May 2012 02:56 PM PDT Hey, you. Yes, you. If you’ve already paid for and pre-ordered the HTC One X from AT&T, I want you to go to your mailbox right now and check it. There’s at least a small chance that your brand new ICS phone is waiting for you. A small number of users at Android Forums have got their phones in their hot little hands right now, two days before the AT&T launch date. That’s two days worth of playing, modding and tinkering that they wouldn’t have had otherwise.
The rest of us can pick up an AT&T One X in retail stores on Sunday, May 6th, or (if you’re not into this newfangled pre-order” business) order it straight off the AT&T website. The One X costs $199 for those who are willing to sign or renew a two-year contract, or $549 if you’d rather buy it outright. If you aren’t convinced by our quite positive review, some AT&T retail stores have demo units on display right now. AT&T’s One X gets a couple of changes from the international version, most notably its LTE connection in addition to HSPA+. It also swaps out NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor for a Snapdragon S4 dual-core, and lowers the integrated storage to 16GB (still no MicroSD card). For all that it’s still one of the best phones available in the United States, so if you’ve got the money, the time and the inclination and you haven’t done so already, go pick one up on Sunday. Archos G9 tablets receive firmware update to solve WiFi issues – again Posted: 04 May 2012 02:51 PM PDT Archos has issued another round of firmware updates for their mildly popular Archos G9 80 and 101 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets. the Archos G9 line might not be the best hardware around, or the nicest, but for a great price they are impressive tablets that run a pretty stock version of Android 4.0 ICS. More details on yesterdays update are available after the break.
The update started rolling out yesterday and will fix a slew of bug and performance should be steadily improved. According to the change log provided by Archos you can expect better WiFi, GPS improvements, as well as less random reboots. Here’s the full list of changes with the firmware update:
As a reminder, version 4.0.6 is the internal build name from Archos themselves. This is not Android 4.0.6 folks, you’ll still be on Android 4.0.3 after updating to the latest firmware — confusing I know. Archos has stated that the new firmware is rolling out now for both the Archos G9 80 and larger 101 tablets and users should be getting it as we speak. Feel free to manually check for updates if you’d rather not wait, then report back in our comment section below with thoughts or if you see any new problems. Device Info

Oracle vs Google lawsuit verdict will arrive Monday Posted: 04 May 2012 01:19 PM PDT It looks like the Oracle vs Google lawsuits might finally be coming to and end here shortly, or have at least reach some sort of verdict. After reports yesterday that the jury was struggling to agree on a verdict new reports today are claiming they’ve finally come to terms on all arguments but one. Read on below for further details as they become available right from the courtroom.
Reports from CNET have stated that the jury has reached a verdict on all parts of the lawsuit but one, and that Judge William Alsup has been updated on the situation. After hours of deliberation and the jury not being able to come to terms on all counts. It looks like we’ll be waiting a little longer before hearing what the final decision is on the case. According to The Verge the Judge has just laid down the law. Judge William Alsup will allow for one final day of deliberation (technically all weekend) and Google will learn their fate from the lawsuits bright and early on Monday morning. At this time it is unknown what part of the case is still in question. This has been an interesting case, and has revealed all sorts of interesting details (linked to below) and we will be sure and update come Monday morning with all the details. |
Rockstar Games Max Payne delayed again Posted: 04 May 2012 12:57 PM PDT It looks like RockStar Games has been pretty busy with their next game for Android. After the hugely successful Grand Theft Auto III release they are now bringing Max Payne to Android. It was originally coming April 26th, then last week suffered a delay. Now things are looking like next week or later for a release on the Google Play Store.
Those looking to seek revenge Max Payne style, only on their Android phones and tablets will have to play another day. Last week Rockstar Games took to Twitter answering questions and stating that the game would be available this week. Then followed up saying it will be released this week “or so” and now we know it was the latter part of that statement that was accurate. Rockstar Games is busy making sure their newest game for Android, the popular shooter for Xbox and PS2 will run absolutely amazing on mobile devices, especially Android. We are hearing they’ll even be supporting the Transformer Prime and its Tegra 3 quad-core processor and will have graphical tweaks for the devices that can handle the improved graphics — just like the update to GTA III. It appears to still be delayed another few days because it’s not available on the Google Play Store and Rockstar hasn’t made any announcement or comments over on Twitter. We’ve reached out for launch info and will update when we hear more details or a possible release date. |

Motorola Cliq 2 update to Gingerbread finally available Posted: 04 May 2012 11:30 AM PDT Good news folks, the 5 people that still own the Motorola Cliq 2 on T-Mobile are finally getting an update for the aging handset. Apparently Motorola and T-Mobile have decided the phone deserves an update and are finally delivering the social phone Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Only this won’t come over the air and users will have to manually install the update.
The CLIQ 2 was released in January of last year and was showing its age back then, and in today’s technology world is quite dated. We heard the update was coming back in February but was apparently delayed an additional 2 months because it’s finally available this week for those interested. Who’s excited? If you’re still rocking the Cliq 2 after almost a year and a half, you’ll be happy to know that you can download Motorola’s update software for Windows (only Windows at the moment) and update the Cliq to Gingerbread should you choose. Hey, the phone will have a better connection, and battery life and browser performance should be much improved with the new update. If you still have the Cliq 2 you’ll want to check out this update soon, or possibly upgrade to the new HTC One S because it’s awesome. [via PocketNow] |
