Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Reference Found in the Play Store Posted: 21 Jun 2012 03:50 PM PDT It looks like we’ll be seeing the next version of Android, expected to be version 4.1 codenamed “Jellybean”, at Google I/O next week. An astute XDA member was purchasing a Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play Store, and noticed the description read: “The latest smartphone from Google, soon the first phone with Android 4.1 jell….” Which is either a slip-up on the Goog’s part, or an intentional teaser left for someone to find. Either way, it’s no surprise that the Nexus will be the first phone to receive the next version, as that’s what it’s purpose is. Whether we’ll see a slew of new Nexus devices like we’ve heard rumors of before isn’t clear yet. source: Android Central

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:29 PM PDT While smartphone cameras improved over the last couple of years, I was always reluctant to drop my point and shoot. I became a Dad a couple of years ago so I wanted to make sure I was getting decent photos all the time. I’m far from a photographer, but I always felt even the simplest point and shoot was better, that is, until now. I recently reviewed the One X and called it the best Android phone hands down. It also happens to have the best camera, and during that review, I realized the time had finally come to let my point and shoot go and trust HTC with my family photographs. I really didn’t have any hesitation, but to fully convince myself I decided to make the One X my exclusive camera on my family vacation last week to Virginia Beach. I was excited and my expectations were high. Did it deliver? Hit the break to find out.
Let me first say that although I was always reluctant to drop my point and shoot, I always knew deep down that using a smartphone made perfect sense since it’s always connected. You can instantly share photos via social networks and/or email, and you would always have all your photos in your pocket in case you wanted to show somebody. On top of all that, taking my other camera home and connecting it to my computer (or inserting an SD card) and transferring photos was always annoying to me. Now I already mentioned that I’m far from a photographer and I don’t Instagram, but with the One X I feel empowered. I won’t try to tell you that it’s as good as your typical high end DSLR, but as an average consumer I feel like for the first time, I’m taking pictures with decent hardware. It actually inspires me to take more pictures and try different things I wouldn’t normally do with my old camera. Yes, basic photos come out great with the One X, but the added effects HTC implemented (HDR, panorama, grayscale, etc.) makes me feel more artistic. It forces me to see people and objects differently through the breathtaking 4.7-inch HD display. Of course there are those times where it’s impossible to get a 3 1/2 year old to cooperate for a simple one tap photo, so the burst shooting mode is always handy and allows me to take a great photo when it sometimes appears impossible to do. You can learn more about the HTC One camera features in my One X review or Joe Sirianni’s One S review, but trust me, you won’t find a better camera in a smartphone. Taking great pictures is only the beginning because the connectivity I mentioned earlier makes the whole experience so much more appealing. With HTC’s partnership with Dropbox you get an additional 23GB of storage for all your photos and video (and other files) for 2 years. This is more than enough, but what’s most appealing is that your photos are automatically uploaded so you have access to your photos from any other device. This includes your desktop, your tablet, or even another family member’s device. You can share your folder(s) with anyone so they can see your photos soon after you’ve taken them. For example, after taking a bunch of photos at the beach last week, my wife could quickly look at the photos on her iPad (yes I said iPad) and even delete the ones that weren’t worthy. We had 3 smartphones, 3 tablets, and 2 laptops on our trip and all our photos could be seen from any device. This kind of connectivity is great all the time. Say you go to a party and you take some photos, everyone in your family can see them within seconds if you give them access to your folder. There is one caveat, you would have to allow automatic uploads via 3G or 4G in order for them to be available right away, otherwise they will upload via WiFi when you get home. Either way, it’s still a major convenience even if you don’t share. Having all your photos backed up and available on any of your own devices is empowering. It should also be noted that most Android phones already have the ability to automatically upload your photos to Picasa through Google+, but it simply doesn’t have the versatility that Dropbox has. Now Dropbox can be implemented with most Android phones so I would highly recommend it, but in order to make it complete you need a killer camera. The One X and One S provide that, but I know there are other smartphones that have decent cameras as well. Yes, the iPhone 4S has a great camera and the Samsung Galaxy S III as well, but I favor HTC based on their black levels and overall performance in lower light situations. Yes this article is meant to sell you on the One X, but it’s also about educating you on the merits of finally making that switch to using your smartphone as your exclusive camera because there are some really nice smartphone cameras available today. For hardcore photographers that own a high end DSLR, I understand that a smartphone camera could never replace that. Fortunately most people fall into my shoes, which makes them casual photographers that want to take decent pictures without all the hassles. If you fall into that category, you need to get rid of your “other camera” and get yourself the HTC One X, One S, or something comparable. The HTC One X changed me forever and trust me, it will do the same for you. Not only will you take better pictures, but you will quickly find out that the other aspects of connectivity is something you will wonder how you lived without. At this point you’re probably saying, “Show me some pictures already!!” Here you go: Greyscale Greyscale Greyscale HDR HDR No filters or enhancements Panorama ..and last but not least, a Father’s Day photo with my son after we returned. Burst mode was utilized for 16 shots and this was the best. I would never have gotten anything near as good as this with my point and shoot.

Chameleon adds phone support along with various tablet sizes Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:20 PM PDT As you already know Chameleon is on Kickstarter for the second time and they already received $46,357 in pledges, well over their goal of $30,000 with 12 days to go. In case you’re not familiar with Chameleon, it’s a better home screen for your tablet. Trust me, it gives you more customizations than any home screen period. They just announced they plan on supporting as many tablet sizes as possible, but more importantly they are adding phone support as well. Everyone who backs $5.00 or more will get both versions. How’s that for a deal? With a lot more Android phones in the wild than tablets, this really makes things interesting. You still have time, so hit the source link to get behind this very innovative product. source: kickstarter and for announcement

Foxconn CEO Claims iPhone 5 “Will Put Samsung Galaxy S III to Shame” Posted: 21 Jun 2012 12:44 PM PDT Saying one product is better than the other is one thing, it’s a completely different issue when you’re just being plain out unprofessional and even borderline racial. Foxconn’s CEO Terry Gou just couldn’t help himself to stir up some controversy by highly urging customers to hold off on purchasing the Samsung Galaxy S III and wait for the eventual arrival of the iPhone 5 later this Fall. He even went as far as saying that the “iPhone 5 would put the Samsung Galaxy S III to shame.” If you think that’s bad, Gou gets even more personal by also reportedly called Samsung "a company with a track record of snitching on its competitors" this was a reference to a European price-fixing investigation of the flat panel industry in 2010. He also went on to praise the Japanese: "I respect the Japanese and especially like their execution and communication styles. Unlike the Koreans, they will not hit you from behind." This isn’t much of a surprise as Foxconn reportedly does have an alliance with Japan’s Sharp Electronics Co. What really hit hard and probably made people lose respect for Gou, is that he also reportedly called Korean’s “gaoli bangzi” which can be translated to “Korean country hicks” or “Korean sticks.”
Talk about being unprofessional, right? Trash talking between competitive products happens a lot in this business, but CEO’s never tend to go this far and make it as personal as Gou did. Either way, both the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III will sell astronomical numbers regardless of what he or anyone will say about each device. Each device hits a certain niche and regardless of what the specifications the iPhone 5 will end up having, it won’t affect or hinder the sales of the Galaxy S III whatsoever. Let us know what you guys think about this and if you think the iPhone 5′s pending release will matter in the Android world at all. source: Patently Apple

Highlights from the Samsung Galaxy S III Launch Event [Video] Posted: 21 Jun 2012 07:01 AM PDT If you remember, during a live stream from the Vodafone launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III, it was mentioned that there was going to be a stop in New York City on June 20 during the Galaxy S III tour. That came through as Samsung went all out hosting a party to celebrate the U.S. launch of the most popular Android phone ever. Actually they ran four parties total, three parties during the day for different media guests, and one at night for five hundred Samsung fans. They had guests like former NBA legend Walt Frazier, actress Ashley Greene, and NBA stars Steve Nash, Kevin Love and Stephen Curry. Basically they set up stations demoing many of the cool aspects of the Galaxy S III such as S Beam, Pop Up Video, TecTiles, AllShare Play, Share Shot, and Group Cast. There really wasn’t anything new, but what was most interesting was the way they presented things. They had some really creative stuff set up so people could understand how these features work. For example, by utilizing Group Cast, they would display a picture on five different phones. User would be asked to find a particular animal in the picture and circle it. Winners would get donations sent to the Wild Wildlife Fund in their name. They also set up a bar in which you could order a drink or dish using S Beam. Last but not least they showed off a new Cinema Game, which will hit movie theaters across the country as a marketing campaign for S Beam. It’s a game in which the audience interacts by waving their arms in order to move a 3D Galaxy S III towards flying Galaxy S IIIs to get them to connect (like S Beam). They even brought in Rob the Barista and Peter Bryce. By the way, stay tuned for a really funny video involving those two soon. Samsung is promising that this is their biggest marketing campaign ever and from what I’ve seen they aren’t kidding. Checkout the highlights below. Click here to view the embedded video.

New Mod Allows NFC Actions With the Device’s screen is off Posted: 21 Jun 2012 06:25 AM PDT Although NFC hasn’t completely caught on yet, it can be quite useful if you have the capability on your mobile device. I have found that using NFC on my Galaxy Nexus can be a vary easy way to change “profiles” from work, car and home. I simply tap one of the few NFC stickers I have strategically placed throughout my life and I can go from vibrate to loud, and from WiFi to Bluetooth. The only issue I’ve really had with using the service is that the device’s screen must be on in order to use it, making an unnecessary and sometimes annoying added step when it could just “work” all the time. Thanks to XDA member Geniousdog254, now it can. By using a new NFC.apk, now your device can complete NFC actions while the screen is off. Simply install the modified app over your old NFC app and your all set. Currently, only the Galaxy Nexus line and the HTC One X, the Galaxy SIII, and the Nexus S are compatible but the developer hopes to add to that list in the future. If you want to check it out for yourself just click through the source link below but be sure to come back here to let us know how it works for you! Thanks Dillon! source: XDA
