POLL: Would you switch carriers for a specific phone? Posted: 03 Aug 2012 12:43 PM PDT Have you ever switched carriers just because they offered a specific handset? Did you jump to T-Mobile back in late 2008 simply because you wanted the G1? What about that EVO in 2010? Did you hop over to Sprint in order to grab that 4.3-inch display? We're curious to see if you've ever considered leaving your provider behind because someone else had a "better" phone. Leave your mark on the poll below and then head to the comments to chat with your fellow Android users. Tell us which phone was so compelling that you were forced to switch allegiances.

Samsung’s August 15 event looks awful Galaxy Note 10.1-ish Posted: 03 Aug 2012 11:32 AM PDT Just checked the inbox to find our Samsung invitation for their August 15th New York event. We thought this would be related to a refresh or re-announcement of the Galaxy Note 10.1 and this only confirms our suspicions. You can see the shape of a tablet with a spot where a stylus might slide out from the bottom left. Considering we know the Galaxy Note II is due two weeks later, we're having a tough time conjuring up anything but a Note 10.1 for the 15th.

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT Last month we had the opportunity to meet the folks from ALTAZ USA at CE Week and were fortunate enough to get our hands on their new Micro-Fi Mini Stereo Speaker. A 21st century version of vintage stereo speakers, Micro-Fi seamlessly meshes wood and metal to recreate the look and feel of a classic hi-fi system. The multiple themes of its retro digital interface further re-enforces the homage to a wistful era.
Right away, the attention to detail with the packaging (not pictured) is pretty awesome. In addition to being recyclable paper and environmentally conscious, it appears that Altaz has gone to some great lengths to ensure that all of the boxing and packing supplies are in their place and have a use. We received an early prototype that doesn't come with the standard "docking station" that the newer models will be released with. That's fine by us, as said docking piece is designed to house an iPhone. The build quality on these little guys is really great. They are small, discrete, and add just the right flourish of organic wood-grain to the right set-up. These are much classier than some of the black-molded-plastic speakers I've got sitting around the apartment. I can imagine these being a conversation-starter in some cigar-smoking John Malkovich-esque CEO's office, or at a trendy record store. Great character. With respect to sound, these little beauties pack about as much volume and clarity that the small form-factor will allow. These aren't going to serve as recording studio monitors or replace your TV soundbar, but they do operate fantastically as my laptop's speakers. I do keep a set of speakers in the bathroom to listen to music during showers, but these are just too attractive for that purpose - risking exposing them to steam, etc. If you're in the market for a set of speakers for your PC, laptop, tablet, or Android - get these. Especially if you'd like to add a little "class" to the operation. Lastly, they also sent along a gorgeous stylus. I cant' really weigh in too heavily on stylus-talk, as I typically don't use one - but I must say Altaz's has made me a believer. Substantial, high-quality, and luxuriously designed. Between the speakers and the stylus, my interest in this company's offerings is piqued. I'd suggest you peruse their products as well. What do you think? What has your experience been with Altaz gear?
