Samsung posts Galaxy S III stress test video

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 10:18 AM PST

Ever wonder what type of process smartphone manufacturers go through to make sure their devices will stand up to the test of time, or the elements we all put them through? We’ve seen these before but today SamsungTomorrow has posted a brand new video showing us the Galaxy S III and Note II getting put through the paces. The video isn’t in English but still fun to watch them click the home button 20 thousand times.

While you don’t really learn anything here, it’s nice to see Samsung is testing their home button longevity, bend tests making sure devices can handle odd movements. They even have a little booty machine that simulates someone sitting down on your smartphone and more. That’s just a few of the many tests being performed in this odd video.

Subtitles would be nice, but they aren’t necessarily needed as we know good and well what is going on the entire video. They do bend tests (which made me cringe) drop tests of their own, water tests, and much much more as you clearly saw from the video above. After watching the video it sort of makes sense why they choose to use plastic for their housing. It has a lot more give in some of these circumstances where aluminum or ceramic wouldn’t.

Samsung’s Galaxy S III has sold more than 30 million devices worldwide, and just earlier today we announced that the Note II has already passed the 5 million milestone. There’s no denying Samsung makes some of the absolute best smartphones on the planet. It’s fun to see what goes on behind the scenes in these videos. Oh and don’t follow this videos lead and use your Galaxy S III in the shower. That probably isn’t a good idea.

AnTuTu Benchmark v3.0 released with new UI, DNA support and more

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 09:59 AM PST

We have good news for all those overclocking fans, speed freaks, and benchmark junkies. The popular benchmarking and performance test tool for Android AnTuTu Benchmark has just received a massive update to v3.0 that brings an entire new experience. They’ve added support for tons of popular devices, improved the user interface, and added more testing options and even a compare tool.

AnTuTu 3 now offers a dedicated 2D benchmark, and a 3D benchmark based on OpenGL ES 2.0. They’ve redesigned the logo, and improved the user interface too. While it still looks mostly the same, they’ve made a few tweaks to improve the general look and feel. AnTuTu has added security features so less users can mess with results and tamper with the app, they’ve added tons of new language support and fixed some SD card issues. Here’s the full list:

- New OpenGL ES 2.0 3D benchmark for 3D game performance test.
- Fully new 2D benchmark for 2D game performance test.
- Add compare page to compare scores with hot devices.
- Auto stop the benchmark if detected the app has been modified.
- Redesigned and adjustment app UI.
- Enhance SDCard path detection.
- Fixed some web page auto pop up bug.
- Fixed sometimes get stuck in splash screen.
- Fixed submit score page appear twice after benchmark.
- Update Italian and Ukraine translate.

The update brought support for many brand new quad-core devices like the LG Nexus 4, Optimus G, and the 5-inch DROID DNA. Although the DNA still isn’t recognized here, while the others two are. It looks like the new 2D and 3D tests are more accurate because powerhouse quad-core devices like the DROID DNA are now seeing much higher results across the board. Previously our DNA scores were around 14,000, but now it blazes to the top of the chart hitting 19,117. That’s one of the highest scores I’ve ever seen.

Benchmarks are just one small area of testing a smartphone, but users still love to see the results the latest and greatest devices achieve. It’s nice to see that AnTuTu has added their own compare tool right into the app to easily compare devices, even though the UI isn’t that great. The brand new AnTuTu v3.0 is available right now from the Google Play Store. Get ready for overclocking, and one day, watercooled smartphones.

Apple to add more devices to Samsung lawsuit

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 08:53 AM PST

There was some debate about whether Apple and Samsung would be allowed to add more devices to the existing lawsuit against each other. Recently, in an effort to keep the companies from starting a new suits, a judge ruled that the two companies could add more devices to the suit. Well Apple has jumped at the chance adding a bunch of new Samsung devices that it claims are infringing.

Apple has filed documents with the US District Court for the Northern District of California adding six more Samsung devices to its infringement suit. Apple is adding the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Rugby Pro, and the Galaxy S III Mini. Even though the S III Mini is not available in the US, Apple is claiming that it is through unofficial channels.

Apple first filed the suit in February 2012, and since then, it’s been a constant flood of battles between the two companies. The focus of Apple’s suits against Samsung have to do with user interface technology and product design. Samsung is just one of many companies Apple has been busy going after in the last year. Apple just reached a settlement with HTC over patent claims.

We cannot forgot that Apple has already won that $1 billion judgement against Samsung. Samsung is trying desperately to get that judgement overturned. In the case of this current suit, Apple claims that these new products being added violate the same patents as the previous devices in the suit.

Kindle Fire on sale for $129 for Cyber Monday

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 08:43 AM PST

Black Friday may have come and gone, but the chances to get good deals for the holiday season is still here with Cyber Monday. Amazon is one of the leaders for saving money on Cyber Monday, and it is offering the Kindle Fire for only $129 on Cyber Monday. If you don’t want the “Special Offer” subsidized model, it will cost $144, which is still a savings.

The discount means Amazon's tablet temporarily undercuts Barnes & Noble's NOOK HD and Google's Nexus 7 by $70. The model Amazon has on sale is the updated version of the original Kindle Fire. It comes with a 1.2GHz processor and 1GB RAM, which Amazon claims makes it 40-percent faster than the original Kindle Fire. It also comes with 8GB of storage and a battery good for up to 9hrs.

Obviously, the Kindle Fire comes with Android installed, but it’s tweaked and modified by Amazon for its tablet. This means that it does not get access to Google Play, but rather, it gets Amazon’s own app store. Of course, this is not a top-of-the-line tablet, and Amazon itself has the Kindle Fire HD, but for $129, it’s a tough deal to beat.

As with any good deal, there always has to be a catch. In the case of the Kindle Fire, Amazon is limiting customers to only one per shopper. If you want the sale, you need to use the code “FIREDEAL.” If you’ve been waiting to grab a Kindle Fire, today might be the best time.

Facebook pushing employees to Android devices to improve app

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 08:04 AM PST

It’s no secret that Facebook has primarily provided its employees with iPhones. Presumably, this is why the iPhone app works better than the Android one, and why it receives many more new features through updates. Of course, as an Android user, you are probably well aware of how lacking the Facebook app is for Google’s OS.

Facebook is encouraging employees to switch to Android devices though a program called “droidfood.” Facebook has placed several posters around its offices asking employees to contact its internal helpdesk to switch from an iPhone to an Android device. Of course, it comes down to whether or not Facebook employees are willing to actually make the switch since this program appears to be completely optional.

Facebook wants it employees to report any bugs they stumble upon in the Android version of its app. Facebook also has posters reminding employees of how many more Android devices are in the market compared to iPhones. This is clearly Facebook’s way of telling employees that the problem with the app is unacceptable with the quantity of Androids floating around out there.

According to reports, Facebook employees with Android devices are required to run the recent beta version of Facebook for Android and Facebook Messenger. The beta versions come with the Range Shake bug reporting tool built into the app. It seems like it would be easier to just let end users get access to the bug reporting tool, but as long as Facebook fixes the app, we don’t really care how it gets done.

Nexus 7 3G in stock again in the UK

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:25 AM PST

If you’re in the UK and looking for a Nexus 7 3G, you’re in luck, because the ASUS-built tablet is back in stock. The tablet is priced at priced at £239 with 32GB of storage and an unlocked HSPA+ modem. According to Google Play, the tablet is scheduled to ship 3-5 days.

The tablet is designed to work across most European 3G networks. The HSPA+ model supports pentaband 3G (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz). The tablet does not come with a SIM or data plan. Instead, buyers of the device are able to shop around and find a data plan from one of many carriers that meets their needs. This is great because it doesn’t force a certain carrier on consumers.

The tablet has been unavailable for the past week or so, as demand for the 3G version of the tablet was more than Google could keep up with. Besides just being a really good tablet, the low cost of ownership is certainly a leading factor for its popularity. After all, it comes in at £130 less than the cheapest iPad mini WiFi + Cellular.

While we come with good news for people looking to grab a 3G Nexus 7, we don’t have the same for people looking to snag a Nexus 4. Google still has no estimate for when the Nexus 4 is going to be back in stock in the UK. For people who cannot wait, Three and other UK carriers are offering the device, but the prices are a little higher than Google’s.

Samsung Galaxy Note II passes five million in global sales

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 06:39 AM PST

Turns out, people really seem to like the Samsung Galaxy Note II. In fact, it just surpassed 5,000,000 in sales worldwide. Two million of those sales have come in under a month. Samsung only just announced that the device has passed three million, and in a matter of weeks, it’s added another two million units.

Some critics argued that a device as big as the Galaxy Note II would not be successful, but Samsung is shutting down the critics. Of course, the sales are not exactly at the level of the Galaxy S III, but for a niche device, it is certainly doing well. Only time will tell if Samsung can keep this momentum up, but it definitely shows that there is a market for larger smartphones.

One thing to keep in mind regarding these sales numbers, is that Samsung is probably referring to its sales to suppliers and distributors, so it does not necessarily mean that five million Note IIs are in the hands of consumers. It still gives us a good idea of how much demand there is for the device.

A Samsung spokesperson said, "(Samsung) will do our best to continue to introduce continuous product innovation" when asked about the sales. Samsung is never content to sit back and enjoy its victories, as they are already rumored to be bringing an update flagship to market, which is anecdotally called the Galaxy S 4. Rumors have it that the S 4 will hit in February next year with an updated quadcore processor and 13-megapixel camera.
