Bad news for Samsung: Apple patent infringements may cost them 88% of profit from phone sales

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 01:13 PM PST

The battle between Apple and Samsung has been going on for quite some time now, and we already know that Apple won a significant case against Samsung regarding patent infringements earlier this year. Well, recently a redacted document from the court case made its way to the public, and in it we find Judge Pender’s recommendations for punitive action against Samsung. Let’s just say it’s not looking pretty for the Korean company. According to FOSS Patents, an blog dedicated to software patent suits, Judge Pender made the following recommendations:

  • a U.S. import ban that would enter into effect after the 60-day Presidential review period following a final ITC decision,
  • a simultaneous cease-and-desist order that would prohibit the sale of any commercially significant quantities of the imported infringing accused products in the United States (this remedy was denied against HTC), and finally…
  • the requirement to post a bond of 88% of the value of all mobile phones, 32.5% of the value of all media players, and 37.6% of the value of all tablet computers found to infringe Apple’s patents-in-suit during the Presidential review period.

According to FOSS Patents, it is highly likely that the recommendations will be implimented, as the ITC staff agrees with the recommendations across the board. It’s too bad these two technology companies can’t just leave this all behind them and put their focus on bringing us newer, faster, better, cooler phones!

Huawei’s Ascend Mate And Its Massive 6.1-Inch Display Smiles Pretty For The Camera, Wants To Go Head On Against The Galaxy Note II

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 10:08 AM PST

It’s no surprise that Huawei is planning on bringing a pretty big device to the masses in the immediate future. After seeing a tease here and another one there, we know that the new device is going to feature some topnotch specs— but we hadn’t seen a picture of what the UI and display would look like… until now. MyDrivers recently got their hands on some actual photos of the device and as you can see, the Ascend Mate sure is a beauty. You can see the device is surrounded by a some sort of a charcoal metallic body that doesn’t look the least bit plasticky, along with the placement of the microUSB, microSD and headphone jack ports. In addition, you can the Ascend Mate’s gorgeous display highlighting the rich and vibrant colors of the customized Android display as well.

Huawei is certainly pulling no strings as it wants to generate major excitement for its new device, while highlighting it will be far superior to Sammy’s massive offering. As of now, all eyes are pointing towards a CES 2013 unveiling— so we won’t need to wait too long to see the cool toy.

Sure, owners of LG’s flagship handset may not be running Jelly Bean just yet, but they do have something pretty impressive to gloat about. The glass covered quad-core powerhouse has been certified as Carbon-Free by the CarbonFund Foundation, assuring its minimal environmental impact. This means that from raw supplies to production, and on to distribution, the LG Optimus G was crafted with Mother Earth’s uncertain future in mind. This installment continues the growing trend from LG, who also has a slew of green refrigerators and other environmentally friendly home appliances.

Well done, LG. Well done.

Samsung to release the Galaxy Note 2 in black

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 07:05 PM PST

A black Samsung Galaxy Note 2? Certainly not much of a surprise, but a great move by Samsung nonetheless. An image of the back side of the Note 2 in black was acquired which prompted this rumor to circulate.

While there’s no official word from Samsung on the validity of a black Note 2, it isn’t far-fetched and we should most certainly expect it to be released sometime next year.

Would you guys pick up a black Note 2?

Apple dropping patent claims against Samsung’s Galaxy S III Mini

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 07:01 PM PST

Apple has decided to drop the litigation it has against Samsung’s Galaxy S III Mini smartphone due to the fact that Samsung isn’t planning on selling the device in the US market. With Apple’s raging pen war against Samsung’s other top devices, this is hardly a win for Samsung. At this point, I’m sure Samsung will take what they can get.

Apparently Apple didn’t see the need in including the S III Mini in the fight as long as the sales wont affect the much important US market.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California is Apple Inc. vs. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al., 12-630.
