SwiftKey Flow Beta Updated To 4.0.0.61

SwiftKey’s take on the swipe keyboard, SwiftKey Flow, has been in public beta for about a month now.  An updated beta was all but guaranteed as the version it replaces, 4.0.0.54, had a limited license for use set to expire January 7, 2013.  Today’s release, 4.0.0.61, has a relatively short limited license, expiring on January 30, 2013, and comes with a host of improvements. The short beta window could be an indication SwiftKey is nearing the end of beta testing or is at least prepared to quickly launch another updated version.

The update brings performance and battery improvements and addresses a few bugs causing force closing and memory leaks. It will also allow for “flow” in landscape on tablets. NFC Business cards from TapMyBiz are high quality and perfect for high impact networking

NFC business cards aren’t new, but they never took off because they have always been credit-card like and who wants to carry a bunch of those around? Well a company called TapMyBiz is the first to offer a true high quality paper-like business card with an NFC chip embedded in it. It just so happened that I needed to order more business cards for CES so I figured I would give it a shot. I was shocked at how awesome the quality was. They will easily fit in a wallet and since I will need to carry a bunch of them to the show, I have no problem doing it since they are no thicker than your typical business card.

TapMyBiz will program each card to do whatever you want it to do when someone touches their NFC enabled phone or tablet to it. It can automatically add your contact information to their device, go to a website, open a video, head to a Facebook Page, or whatever you can think off. You can even set it to place a phone call or even a Skype call. If you ever want to reprogram any or all of your cards to do something else, you can easily do it with most of the NFC tag apps that are available in the Google Play Store.

You would think that a product like this would have a slow turnaround time, but they are able to produce and program your cards within 3 to 4 days. Ordering your card couldn’t be easier as their site offers free templates for designing your own. Of course, if you need any help, they offer 24/7 customer support. Right now they are a little limited in the style card, but come February, they will offer more sizes and different styles like rounded edges. That’s not all because by mid-year they will be offering greeting cards, flyers, and posters.

ASUS Nexus 7 Dock Set To Ship On January 16th

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for those of you Nexus 7 owners looking forward to that elusive docking station, but it appears the shipping date has been pushed back just oh-so slightly. According to the listing found at online retailer B&H, the Nexus 7 dock has been revised to show a January 16th shipping date— which still technically falls in line with the originally expected mid-January ship date, but still gives a minor reason for concern considering there are many of you out there who were hoping for the dock arriving as early as on the 15th (or even possibly before that).

The good thing is that at least the 16th is only a few weeks away… let’s just hope owners of the tablet won’t need to wait beyond that.

HTC’s New Year’s Resolution: Bring Unique Products To Market

HTC isn’t blind. The Taiwanese manufacturer can see the gap between itself and some of its competitors is growing. They’ve responded by promising to focus on bringing “unique products” to market in 2013. Judging by their declining sales numbers, HTC needs to do something. Chief Executive Officer Peter Chou believes innovation and not marketing is the key to an HTC rebound.  He said, ”Our competitors were too strong and very resourceful, pouring in lots of money into marketing.”

HTC needs an angle, a market strategy for success despite being squeezed between Apple and Samsung. Sammi’s Galaxy S III topped the iPhone to become the best selling phone of 2012 Q3. The iPhone 5 did its thing. Chou said, ”Although we don’t have as much money to counter, the most important thing is to have unique products that appeal to consumers.”  HTC’s One X was well received in 2012 but failed to generate traction and certainly did little to threaten the iPhone or Galaxy S III. HTC is in a tough spot and they know it. Now let’s see what they do about it.

Samsung Galaxy S IV prototype may be on way to CES 2013

More rumors and leaks today as we inch closer to CES 2013 next week. The subject of the latest speculation is Samsung’s Galaxy S IV device, which will likely become one of the most anticipated devices for at least the first half of 2013. Earlier today SamMobile received what appears to be a legitimate picture of the Galaxy S IV. The rendering suggests a much smaller bezel, which may be part of Samsung’s plan to bump up the screen size while keeping the overall device size closer to the Galaxy S III dimensions. Noticeably absent is a physical home button, suggesting on screen buttons will be used for the device. This latest picture appears consistent with the render we reported on last week.

According to sources, Samsung is planning to show an early prototype of the Galaxy S IV to a small group of executives and partners during CES 2013. Unfortunately for the public, this will all occur in private meetings, probably under heavy guard, to prevent more details from leaking. Tipsters suggest Samsung’s Vice Chairman Jay Lee will be leading the closed door session.

Google’s Dan Morrill unearths early Android mascots

With the start of a new year, Google’s Dan Morrill is doing what many people have been doing this week, the annual ritual of cleaning out stuff. In his case, he was cleaning out some old files on his server when he came across some artwork he created back in 2007. At the time, Android had not yet launched and Dan was doing developer relations work for Google. One day with some spare time, he decided to crank out some images for a slideshow he was working on for an internal developer launch. Depending on what you think, we were all blessed or cursed that Dan’s work was supplanted by Irina Blok’s bugdroid design.

Besides the discovery of what almost was in terms of the Android mascot, Dan shared in the comments to his Google+ post that robots were almost used as the naming scheme for Android releases. However, the team soon realized most of the recognizable robot names were trademarked, leading to the confectionary based convention we all know.

Corning Announces Gorilla Glass 3 Ahead Of CES Next Week

Ladies and gentlemen, Corning has formally announced its brand-new Gorilla Glass 3 to the masses. Recent Samsung Galaxy S III Update Fixes More Than Just The Sudden Death Issue— Also Fixes Major Security Exploit

You folks remember about a subtle, but very important utility update for the Galaxy S III that was released a few days ago? Well apparently, it does more than just fix the sudden death issue. SamMobile reports that the same update (I9300XXELLA) fixes a well-known security vulnerability found in the Exynos chip. Basically, the vulnerability essentially gave root permissions to any app (again with emphasis— any app), with the result being no control over the permissions from users of the smartphone. Fortunately, it has been identified that the recent update the has actually patched the security vulnerability. Additionally, the update contains new bootloaders which should help to alleviate any sort of possible sudden death issues with the smartphone.

As of now, only owners of the GT-I9300 variant in the UK have received the update, though we’re hopeful that the rest of the GT-I9300 owners out there will get the update sooner than later.

Acer’s rumored Iconia B1 will launch as Iconia B this month for $150

We first spotted Acer’s affordable 7-inch Iconia B1 tablet last month, where it was rumored the device would launch globally at a staggering $99 price point. Well, new information has leaked out today suggesting the device would in fact launch as the Iconia B this month. The tablet is slated to make its world debut in India for 7,999 INR, which equates to around $150 US, a bit more than originally rumored.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Acer Iconia B  runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and sports a 7-inch 1024 x 600 display, a 1.2-GHz dual-core MediaTek processor and 512MB of RAM. Users will also get 8GB of on board storage with expansion available through the included micro SD slot.
