Sony looking to launch a water resistant Xperia ZR?

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 12:06 PM PDT

We mentioned it before, and it looks like the rumors were true. According to the Xperia blog, Sony is looking to launch a new Xperia model called the Xperia ZR; code-named Dogo.

As far as the specs, the Xperia ZR will have a 4.6-inch (720 x 1280) display, a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm S4 Pro chipset (we're hoping it is the newer 600 series), 2GB RAM, a 13MP Exmor RS camera sensor, 8GB internal storage, microSD memory card support and a 2300mAh battery. The Xperia ZR will also be water resistant with an IP55/IP58 rating, giving it a higher level of element resistance than the Xperia Z. With that rating it can be submerged in much as 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.

When it comes to looks, sources say the design of the handset looks more like the Xperia ZL than the Xperia Z with its glass body, however it will be pretty thick (about 10mm and weighing around 140g.)

So far we have no details on price or release dates. As always, we will make sure to update you as soon as we receive pictures and more details.

Intel says yes to $200 android notebooks

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 11:36 AM PDT

According to Intel CEO Paul Otellini, notebooks are soon going to be hitting the $200 mark. The catch? They’ll be running Android instead of Windows. Dadi Perlmutter, executive VP and chief product officer for Intel, says notebooks at the bottom end of the notebook pricing spectrum will run Android on the Intel Atom mobile processor.

According to Perlmutter, ”We have a good technology that enables a very cost-effective price point.” As far as the price of Windows 8 laptops, he says that “depends on how Microsoft prices Windows 8. It may be a slightly higher price point.”

We’re not seeing any specifics on what kind of Android notebooks we can look forward to – yet. However, speculation says that they will probably end up being convertible-type notebooks. He also said the up-and-down PC market as of late should stabilize, and even pick back up, by the last half of the year, and heading into 2014.

Perlmutter also said that Intel plans on shipping out data-only multimode LTE chipsets by the middle of the year, as well as multimode voice over LTE and data processors toward the end of the year. There are also plans for Intel to show off a mobile chip that incorporates LTE on the same silicon as the application chip.

Be sure to hit the source link for the full details, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Samsung posts $6.4 billion net profit after Q1 earnings

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 09:21 AM PDT

Even with the heavily-awaited Samsung Galaxy S4 sitting in the “yet to be available” category, Samsung has just posted some big financial news. Their Q1 profits have been released, and with them, Samsung has passed 7.15 trillion Won, or about 6.3 billion US dollars. Their total sales sit at 52.9 trillion Won, a big raise from the already staggering 45.3 trillion Won announced last quarter.

Of course, Android plays a huge part in their sales – approximately $358 billion of their profits come from phones, a lot of which are powered by Android. Samsung Mobile hauled in 6.51 trillion Won, with 68 million units sold.

SIMPLE Mobile, a great alternative to contract plans

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 08:57 AM PDT

I hate bills, especially phone bills, and when I receive one in the mail that includes overage charges I want to scream. Who wants to take time out of their busy and already chaotic day to call customer service to barter a deal that gets rid of excessive charges that weren’t supposed to be there in the first place? Certainly not me!

How it normally goes…

It all begins beautifully. You walk into a shiny new phone store, they talk to you sweetly as you try to explain how you want a plan that includes everything and one that won’t leave you with surprises, and after an hour or so you leave with a brand new toy and plan. You think to yourself, this is finally what I’ve been waiting for. A flat $79.95 a month, no surprises, no sneaky hidden fees.

A month later, you come back to reality and realize you are in the same situation you were in with your previous plan: service fees, roaming fees, credit checks, extra data rates, smart phone charges, and so on. In all honesty lately, the no-contract plan options have been looking better and better to me.

A different way…

For the past 60 days, I have had the pleasure of using a test phone (a Galaxy Nexus) with a SIM card provided by SIMPLE Mobile, and I have to say I am quite pleased. How does it work? SIMPLE Mobile (owned by TracFone Wireless) runs off of T-Mobile’s 4G network, and has about the same connectivity as regular contract T-Mobile users. You use your own phone or purchase one from a retailer such as Best Buy or Amazon, so there are no extra charges for phone type.

It doesn’t matter if you prefer an Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, or Windows phone, they are all welcome! To get started, just sign up online or at a local Simple Mobile dealer and they will send you an activated SIM card. Once you receive the card, all you do is insert it into the phone, go through a couple of activation steps, and you are ready to go. Unlimited talk plans start at just $40 a month (or $25 for 15 days) and they even offer international long distance plans as well for an additional $10 a month.

Of course nothing is perfect. I live in the South, and even though the coverage map says I have 4G capabilities, I never saw it once. But I can’t complain. The $50 plan I am currently using gives me a full 3G or 4G experience, and even while I drove to Ohio I never had any downtime or loss of coverage. Web browsing was flawless, but MMS services did have some problems with replicating messages at times. However, there is an easy fix for that: download a messaging app.

I have included plans and pricing below. Honestly, with full plans starting at just $40 a month and no extra fees or hassles (as well as being able to end my my service at the end of each billing cycle and transfer my own number,) I am quite pleased. If you are in the market for a no-contract plan, I highly recommend you check out SIMPLE Mobile.
