Mid-range Samsung Galaxy Core for Asian, European markets leaks

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 10:18 AM PDT

samsung_galaxy_core

Although Samsung probably would like to see anyone buying a Samsung device run out and grab one of their top devices like a Samsung Galaxy S 4 or a Samsung Galaxy Note II, they know that realistically there will be many people looking for something a little less expensive even if it means giving up some ground on technical specs. In response to that market segment, information about a new mid- to lower-tier device dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Core has been uncovered. The GT-I8262 model which has not yet been officially announced is expected to hit the Russian and Chinese markets in mid-May and may eventually find its way into some other European and Asian markets.

The Galaxy Core is certainly not going to overwhelm anyone with the hardware it makes available. Reports indicate it will have a 4.3-inch 480×800 display, 768MB of RAM, and will be powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. The device will have the benefit of accepting a microSD card to beef up the 8GB of onboard storage, handy if users decide to take advantage of the cameras, including a 5MP front-facing camera. While not the most powerful device by a long shot, it will come loaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Galaxy Core does appear to be dual-SIM capable, so that will be a nice bonus for buyers. Estimates are that it will be available for 12,990 rubles ($417 USD).

NY Times rolls out app for Google Glass users

nytimes_google_glass_app

For most people, the opportunity to get a Google Glass device is still about a year away. There is a relatively small set of early adopters, mainly people who have agreed to be beta testers and developers, who are already getting their devices or will be soon. For those individuals, the NY Times is rolling out an app that will make their news available via Google Glass. In the case of the NY Times, there is not really a specific app to install. Instead, users have to connect their Google Glass device to their Google account using a special web site. The process is similar to sites that let you sign in using a Facebook or Google+ account. Once connected, the NY Times will deliver breaking news alerts and top news on an hourly basis to your Glass device. Users will have the option of having article summaries read aloud.

If you are one of the lucky ones with a Google Glass device already, hit the source link to get connected with the NY Times. If you don’t have Google Glass, you can go through the motions of linking to your Google account and you’ll be ready a year from now when you can finally buy your own pair.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 to hit mass production stage in late May

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 09:04 AM PDT

qualcomm-snapdragon-800

Qualcomm’s insanely powerful Snapdragon 600 chip has found a home in many flagship devices, including the HTC One and some models of the Galaxy S 4, and as far as benchmarks and performance goes, it blows everything else out of the water. At this point, it really doesn’t seem like a mobile CPU could get any better. Well, according to Qualcomm, their Snapdragon 800 chip is going to be better. The next flagship SoC is slated to hit mass production in late May, although there’s no word on when it will appear in consumer devices.

The Snapdragon 800 bests the 600 by featuring new Krait 400 architecture, which can maintain a steady clock speed of 2.3 GHz and packs Adreno 330 graphics, which is capable of 4K, 30 FPS output. Needless to say, the Snapdragon 800 is going to be hard to top.

Intel to power Android Notebooks, says they’ll be priced as low as $200

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 08:54 AM PDT

Androidbook_concept

We’d heard reports about Android-powered notebooks that would be shipping later this year, and Intel has taken the stage to shed some more light on those Androidbooks. According to Intel, these new notebooks will be very aggressively priced, coming in at just $200, and many of them are definitely going to be running Android instead of Windows 8. And yes, these are touchscreen PCs that Android can completely take advantage of, complete with Intel’s Atom CPUs that have performed extremely well in benchmarks.

Intel’s executive vice president, Dadi Perlmutter, said many of these notebooks will likely be “convertible” notebooks; they can essentially be a tablet or a laptop, depending on what the user needs in a particular circumstance. Perlmutter did also say there will be higher end Android notebooks running on Intel’s Core line of processors, as well as the cheaper Atom processors.

How to set up and use WatchON along with the IR blaster on the Samsung Galaxy S 4

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_WatchOn

Just like the HTC One, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 features an IR blaster along with a companion app to see what’s on TV and get recommendations. Samsung’s version is called WatchON and doesn’t appear to be as robust as HTC TV, but it gets the job done. WatchON lets you control your TV as well as a cable or satellite box through the IR blaster at the top of Galaxy S 4. You will need to go through an initial setup, but soon after, you will be able see your TV guide on your GS4 and get recommendations based on your interests. Just tap on a show or sporting event to get more information and once more to change the channel to that particular program. We put together this hands on video showing you how to set it up as well as some of the features from the WatchON app. Skip on past the break to see how it works, and don’t forget to check out our other Galaxy S 4 guides.

Samsung smartphone market share hits new record for 1st quarter 2013

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 07:54 AM PDT

Strategy_Analytics_Q1_2013_Smartphones

Samsung shows no signs of slowing down according to Strategy Analytics. They released numbers for the 1st quarter and Samsung hit a new record in terms of smartphone market share. They sold 69.4 million smartphones, which equates to a 33.1% market share, 4.2% higher than the 1st quarter 2012. Most of that increase came at the expense of Apple, which was at 17.9%, down from 22.8%. Apple could be peaking…

Woody Oh , Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said, “Apple grew just 7 percent annually and shipped 37.4 million iPhones worldwide in Q1 2013. Apple’s global mobile phone marketshare is approaching a peak. Apple will need to launch new models, or partner with additional major carriers like China Mobile, if it wants to expand significantly beyond its current ceiling of 10 percent global volume share.”

Google Glass easter egg aleady exposed

Google_Glass_Easter_Egg

Google and easter eggs go hand in hand so it’s no surprise that one was uncovered within Google Glass. If you’re lucky enough to have one of the Explorer Editions of Glass, you can go to Settings and Device Info, View Licences, and tap the touchpad nine times. When completed, you will see a bunch of images of the entire Project Glass team. Apparently team member, Mike LeBeau snuck it in as a tribute to his colleagues.
