Google Drive mobile app updated; Brings forth Androids card UI

Google Drive for mobile devices has been updated and brings forth a new UI as well as some useful tools. Here’s what you can expect with the update:

- New grid view makes it easier to find your files
- New quick preview lets you view photos and other files from within the app
- Scan documents, receipts and letters for safe keeping in Drive; then search by contents once uploaded
- Download a copy of files to your local device (Honeycomb+)
- Spreadsheet editor now supports changing fonts, colors and cell alignment
- View properties of files from within the editors
- Bug fixes and visual improvements

Google updates Play Magazines user interface as part of design streamline

Google has been trying to streamline their apps’ user interface to go along with the “cards” look we first saw in Google Now. Google Play Music and Play Books have already been updated over the past few days, and now Play Magazines follows with their new UI. The white background with purple accents fits very well into  Google’s new simplified design style. Aside from the new UI, bug fixes are also included in the update, version 2.0.

I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of Google’s apps updated to match. You can download the updated app from the link after the break.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 smartphone headed to Cricket on June 7th

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 smartphone is in the midst of a global assault on its consumers, so it should come as no surprise that wireless carrier Cricket is the latest brand to carry the sweet device. The popular prepaid carrier confirmed it will offer the device from June 7th to customers for a smooth $599.99 outright or $55 down (plus monthly payments) for qualifying customers. Additionally, for customers that take advantage of the Galaxy S 4′s release, Cricket will offer for a limited time, double the monthly full speed data speed allowance for its 4G LTE Android Muve Music Double Data service plans, compared to its standard 3G rate plans. Or of course, customers will be able to take advantage of its other traditional plans that start at $45/month, which is a pretty sweet deal.

SAN DIEGO – May 22, 2013 – Cricket Communications, Inc. today announced the upcoming availability of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone builds on the success and innovation of its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S3, and provides a suite of new innovations that will change how customers interact with a smartphone. The Galaxy S4 uniquely makes advanced technologies and features easy to use by integrating them into the way individuals use their phones every day. The Galaxy S4 will be available at Cricket company-owned stores, dealers and at www.mycricket.com starting June 7, 2013 for $599.99 (MSRP). Qualifying customers can put $54.99 down at purchase plus monthly payments.

“The Galaxy S4 redefines the smartphone and we are very proud to offer our customers the highest level of wireless technology on the market,” said Matt Stoiber, senior vice president of devices for Cricket. “Cricket’s three smartphone rate plans start as low as $45 per month1 and give customers value-packed choices for the plan that’s right for them with unlimited music included.”

The Galaxy S4 is the first device to enable consumers to control the device with touch-less features including scrolling or turning a page and viewing documents within a file folder or a link on a web page. It enhances memorable moments with innovative camera features that captures progressive action and easily removes unwanted people from the photo. The Galaxy S4 also enhances the TV watching experience with the new Samsung WatchON™ service that simplifies searching and recommends TV, movies and sports according to personal tastes. With WatchOn and the built in IR blaster, the Galaxy S4 also functions as a remote control for home theater equipment.

The Galaxy S4 combines the simple and visual interface introduced with the Galaxy Series Camera with a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera to take professional looking photographs with a smartphone. The front-facing 2-megapixel camera on the Galaxy S4 allows consumers to capture special moments in unique and new ways with Dual Camera shooting mode. Dual Camera mode takes pictures with both the rear and front cameras simultaneously to enable the photographer to be in the photo as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is available on Cricket’s 4G LTE Android Muve Music Double Data service plans that offer, for a limited time, double the monthly full speed data allowance offered in 3G rate plans. The $50 4G LTE Android Muve Music Double Data Rate Plan allows 2GB of full-speed data; the $60 plan allows 5GB of full-speed data and the $70 plan offers 10GB of full-speed data.

The Galaxy S4 is also available on Cricket’s 3G all-inclusive smartphone rate plans start at $50 for unlimited talk and text plus up to 1GB of full-speed data per month. The $60 smartphone plan contains up to 2.5GB of full-speed data per month and the $70 smartphone plan offers up to 5GB of full-speed data per month. With the $60 and $70 plans, customers can use their device as a hot spot to power additional wireless devices.

Cricket 4G LTE service is now available in Philadelphia, Phoenix, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Laredo, Corpus Christi and the Brownsville-McAllen-Harlingen market, Texas in addition to existing 4G LTE service in Las Vegas and Tucson. The company’s LTE service now covers approximately 21 million potential customers.

GoldGenie offers Samsung Galaxy S4 plated in gold, platinum, or rose gold

However, if it’s just not quite premium enough for you, GoldGenie is offering gold plated versions of the S4 at a very premium price. There are three 24ct. options to choose from – gold, platinum, and rose gold.

The phones obviously aren’t cheap. The gold plated comes at around $2564, the platinum at $2654, and the rose gold at $2609. GoldGenie ships the phones in cherry oak finished boxes along with a limited edition certificate to show off. GoldGenie assures that their phones are  ”sim free and unlocked to work on any network in the world.” So, who wants one?

Surprise!!! Samsung secretly working on fingerprint protection technology behind the scenes

Samsung is a brand that prides itself on bringing innovative technology to its devices, so it should come as no surprise that it is bringing fingerprint technology to its devices. The gang at SamMobile got a tip from a Sammy insider showcasing some Galaxy S III firmware from the SecSettings .apk file. Within the file is clearly the early components of some sort of fingerprint tracking system. When Samsung plans on releasing its newfound technology remains to be seen, but there will be no doubt it’ll certainly generate excitement and buzz in the meantime.

Hi Hey Hello musical short film from Samsung released

You may be aware that Samsung has been spending more on marketing lately than they have on research and development. Their latest video released to YouTube is another example of how that strategy is playing out. The 5-minute video titled “Hi Hey Hello” is based on a song by the same name from The Chicharones and follows the budding romance of a young couple. Director Joseph Kahn clearly had a directive from Samsung in producing the video – highlight the Samsung Galaxy S 4. He does this by putting the device in the hands of male lead who uses many of Samsung’s latest features like Dual Shot, Smart Pause, Drama Shot, Sound & Shot, Air Gesture, and Group Play/Share Music to attract his female lead’s attention. You can check out the video, which includes astronauts, after the break.

Google passes IBM to become second most valuable brand, still behind Apple

According to the 2013 BrandZ list of top global brands, Google ranks second, valued at $113.669 billion. Although the company is still short of Apple’s value of $185.536 billion, they still passed by IBM, who currently rank third at $112.536 billion.

One notable name is Samsung, which is currently ranked at number 30, having jumped up a whole 25 places. This can clearly be pointed to their increased advertising on their Galaxy line and exploding sales figures.

Google’s second-place ranking shows steady growth for the company, but their spot behind Apple says that they’re still the company to beat. Google looks to continue closing in on Apple in the current year.

HTC Desire 600 Dual-Sim shows up in benchmarks, mid-range device headed for Europe

HTC has been keeping the spotlight on its HTC One, but that doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten about the mid-range market. The latest device in the Desire line has popped up in some benchmarks and goes by the lengthy name of HTC Desire 600 Dual-Sim. It sports a 1.2 GHz, unspecified processor, a 960 x 540 screen, and Android 4.1.2, and appears to heading to European markets only at launch. Unfortunately, we can’t get any other specs from the benchmark, but hopefully we’ll see HTC keep putting that Ultrapixel camera on devices other than its flagship phone. Then again, they keep the Ultrapixel marketing for the One line of devices. We’ll find out soon enough, either way.

Qualcomm previews next-gen 2,560 by 1,440 Mirasol display

With the kick-off of SID Display Week 2013 in Vancouver came some pretty neat new concepts from Qualcomm. The company demoed a 1.5-inch panel embedded on the top of an “always-on” smartphone and on the face of a smartwatch.

Perhaps the most interesting display was a 5.1-inch panel with a spectacular 2,560 by 1,440 (577 ppi) resolution. While up close, the images seem much more crisp than on the current top-of-the-line displays, the colors don’t quite pop like they do on other handsets. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. The screen has a 6x power advantage over current LED and OLED displays. This means that your phone could go days without charging. But don’t get over excited, because Qualcomm says that this technology is still a few years from mass-production. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what else the future brings for smartphone technology.

Sprint announces the Kyocera Hydro Rise smartphone

Hot of the heels of its unique Hydro smartphone, Sprint has announced the brand-new Hydro Edge for the general public. Developed by Kyocera, this new Jelly Bean-powered toy features a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon chip, a 4-inch impact resistant display and a 5 megapixel camera . Additionally, this new device will be fully waterproof and have a Smart Sonic Receiver unit.

And now for the news prospective customers have been waiting on: the Hydro Rise will land in Sprint and Boost Mobile stores sometime this summer. Unfortunately, Sprint hasn’t come out with the exact release date or the pricing just yet, but we should expect to receive further information on the Hydro Edge as we get closer to whenever it is the phone’s release date will be.
