Verizon planning to end life of Droid DNA, prepping for arrival of HTC One Posted: 19 Jun 2013 03:03 PM PDT Multiple sources are reporting that Verizon is currently flagging the HTC Droid DNA and the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE for “close out,” and retail stores have been running promos and sales to clear out remaining stock of the two devices. Just speculating here of course, but this is probably due to the upcoming launch of the HTC One for Verizon— they need to make some room and clear out old phones from the same manufacturer. Although no firm launch date has been confirmed for the HTC One on Verizon, we’re expecting it to come very soon. This recent move will leave the RAZR HD and RAZR M as the only Droid-branded phones left on Verizon. Of course with the recent hype from @DroidLanding tweeting about an augmented reality game possibly leading to the release of a new Droid device, more Droids could surely be on the way. And for those of you worrying that you won’t be receiving any more upgrade support for your DNA, you may be in luck— remember, the Incredible, Rezound, and Thunderbolt all received upgrades long after their EOL. Of course no promises here, but there is some hope. Source: Droid Life

New App: ‘Rockmelt’ news reader released to Google Play Posted: 19 Jun 2013 02:41 PM PDT Rockmelt, a news reader for Android, was recently released to the Google Play Store and immediately received rave reviews. The application offers an interface much like the one provided in Google Currents, and features a stream of news stories categorized by themes/interests or specific news sources that you can “follow.” Content is gracefully placed on the screen and the interface is simple enough for even the biggest smartphone newbies to understand. The search feature allows users to search for specific news sources instead of just picking categories, which will help readers narrow down their selection of incoming content. And of course there are plenty of social media features, allowing users to post content directly to Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Check out a video, a screenshot gallery, and the link to the app in the Play Store after the break. Click here to view the embedded video.

Dolphin Browser updates to v10, brings new UI and Web App Store Posted: 19 Jun 2013 01:47 PM PDT One of the original third party web browsers for Android was Dolphin Browser. Since it was originally released, bigger browsers like Chrome and Firefox have surpassed it in popularity, but Dolphin still hasn’t given up making updates and improvements. Today Dolphin’s developers updated the browser to version 10, bringing quite a few new features. There’s a brand new, cleaneruser interface. Another nice addition is the new “Web App Store,” in which users can add popular web apps to their homescreen via shortcuts. Also, version 10 introduces the “Dolphin Key,” which enables gesture and swipe shortcuts to the menu or tab list. Also, Flash support has returned. After the break, you can find the change log and download link.
What’s in this version: +New UI design

Rugged NEC Terrain officially announced for AT&T Posted: 19 Jun 2013 01:25 PM PDT Details of the NEC Terrain leaked a few months ago, but today AT&T made things official. As you can see from the picture above, the unique thing about this phone is that it has a physical QWERTY keyboard and is candy bar style – something we haven’t really seen in smartphones in years. Also, it is very rugged – water-resistant, dustproof, and shockproof. There’s even a dedicated push-to-talk button. The Terrain is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor at 1.5 GHz and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. A 5-megapixel rear camera and 0.3-megapixel front camera comes along as well. Since the keyboard takes up much space, the Terrain has just a 3.1-inch display. You can get the NEC Terrain beginning June 21 through AT&T Business Solutions for $99 with a two year contract. Insiders claim Samsung not interested in Facebook phone Posted: 19 Jun 2013 01:03 PM PDT Yesterday when Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg met with executives from Samsung to pitch a new Facebook phone, we concluded such a collaboration was improbable. New reports today from unidentified insiders close to the discussions indicate Samsung is unlikely to take up Facebook’s quest to become the “second Google.” The insider hints that Samsung already sees Google as a rival in the smartphone market and does not want to “nurture” yet another competitor. The sense of Google being a rival, instead of a partner, appears to stem from the belief that Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility last year has the two titans on a collision course for market share. Besides not opening any new financial doors for Samsung, a partnership with Facebook to produce a new handset could have a negative impact on Samsung. After being widely panned, Facebook’s Home launcher could be seen as a downgrade relative to the image Samsung is trying to present. Samsung is also working on initiatives like Tizen, which would probably give it much more control over the user experience than what they would achieve in a partnership with Facebook. Samsung has not yet offered any official word regarding the nature of the meeting or their response to Zuckerberg’s entreaties. source: The Korea Herald

Falcon Pro pulled from Play Store due to token authentication issues Posted: 19 Jun 2013 10:22 AM PDT
After the authentication token issues earlier this week, third-party Twitter app Falcon Pro has been pulled from Google’s Play Store. On Monday, Falcon Pro reached its limit of 100,000 users, who were each given an access token. Once that 100,000 limit was reached, new users could no longer get tokens to access the app, thanks to official Twitter third-party app rules. As a workaround, developer Joaquim Verges released a new version of the app that revoked all previous tokens so users would have to log in again, which would free up unused tokens and pirated apps. A few months ago, this solution worked to get around the token limit, but according to Verges, the limit was reached within 24 hours. To keep anymore people from buying the app, the developer has pulled the app from the Play Store. As a courtesy to those who bought the app, Verges has uploaded the last available version as a Google Drive link until he can figure out another workaround for that token limit. Hopefully this won’t be the end of this fantastic Twitter application. source: Android Authority

NVIDIA announces plans to expand business model to address growth in visual computing demands Posted: 19 Jun 2013 10:05 AM PDT NVIDIA announced via their blog today that they are preparing to take things in a new direction by licensing their GPU cores and visual computing patent portfolio to other manufacturers. NVIDIA notes that during recent years, as PC sales have been in a decline, sales of other computing devices have been increasing. Going along with this changing landscape, consumers are demanding faster, crisper, high definition displays that produce vivid images no matter what device is currently in use. Driving those displays are the GPUs and NVIDIA is in a good position to capitalize as they have been a long time leader in the GPU market for PCs and more recently, they have been successful in the Android device market with their Tegra line of chips. As NVIDIA notes though, trying to meet the demands of every part of the expanding market, which will be in the billions of units range for all types of devices, is not practical. They can get their technology into more parts of the market by licensing their intellectual property to other manufacturers and realize financial benefits in the process. The first step will involve the Android device market, which NVIDIA describes as “an unprecedented opportunity” due to the explosion of Android devices, by licensing their Kepler architecture. Kepler supports DX11, OpenGL 4.3 and GPGPU capabilities using only a half-watt of power to operate. This makes “it scalable from smartphones to supercomputers.” Kepler is already the base architecture for GPUs like the GeForce line, Quadro and Tesla and will be used in the next generation of Tegra chips codenamed Logan. NVIDIA will eventually license rights to their visual computing patent portfolio so others can develop their own GPU devices. source: NVIDIA

LG ready to start mass production of flexible displays Posted: 19 Jun 2013 09:34 AM PDT LG Display has announced it will start mass production of flexible OLED displays for smartphones during the fourth quarter of 2013. The flexible displays will support ultra high-definition and besides the benefits of being flexible, will be very thin as well. According to LG’s official statement, “We have completed the development of our first flexible displays. We will mass produce flexible displays from the fourth quarter of this year.” The production facility in Paju is expected to be able to produce 12,000 sheets on a monthly basis, though it is not clear how many devices could be produced from a single sheet. The first “customer” for the flexible displays will be LG Electronics, the majority stakeholder in LG Display, which plans to release its first flexible smartphone later this year. LG is hoping flexible displays will become more than a niche item in the mobile market. If so, they are prepared to sell their flexible screen technology to other smartphone manufacturers. LG also anticipates the flexible screens will help the company break out of the current business cycle for traditional displays, helping the bottom line. Along with flexible displays for smartphones, LG is working on OLED TV screens that will support ultra high definition quality. Meanwhile, Samsung continues to work on their flexible screen technology. With this announcement though, it appears LG has gained the upper hand in being first to market as we thought might happen. The two companies are also engaged in legal battles related to alleged industrial spying related to OLED screen technology. source: Korea Times
