HP and NVIDIA introduces two Tegra-4 powered tablets

HP-Slate7-Extreme-small-650x483

Just last month, we heard that HP is working on a tablet that will feature the new Tegra 4 processor and will be known as the HP Slate 8 Pro. Today, HP and NVIDIA decided  to partner up and announced the Slate 8 Pro along with another tablet – HP Slate 7 Extreme. Both tablets have two things in common – They both are running on NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor and are boosted by our favorite operating system, Android.

HP Slate8 Pro Tablet, Snow White with Android Screen, Front

Slate 7 Extreme features a 7-inch display that has a resolution of 1280×800. Also it has bass-reflex port speaker powered by NVIDIA’s PureAudio tech, along with a stylus – which is powered by NVIDIA’s DirectStylus technology. On the other hand, Slate 8 Pro features an 8-inch 1600×1200 display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel camera on the front for video chatting. It features a microSD card slot, and also has micro-HDMI and micro-USB port.

Both of them will be available in market this holiday season. So, are you planning to grab one? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

eReatah tackles reading with subscription service
Sep 19th 2013, 19:56, by Scott Webster

Looking for a new alternative to reading books on your Android smartphone or tablet? Consider eReatah, an upstart service which employs a subscription method as opposed to buying individual books.

Pricing starts at $14.99 per month (two books) and goes as high as $24.99 for four books downloads per month. When you consider that something like 70% of books are priced around $10 (or higher), the average cost with eReatah is definitely cheaper.

ereatah2I had a chance to speak with the eReatah team yesterday and they advised that any books you purchase under the plan will be yours to read, even if you cancel your plan. It’s essentially the same as having a magazine subscription; just because you cancelled doesn’t mean you cannot go back to the stuff you already own.

The library of books is already 90,000 strong and growing quite rapidly, however it’s not the full breadth you might find with others. It’s worth pointing out, though, that the entire catalog of Simon and Schuster are available immediately.

Indeed, the app looks great on both Android and iOS, and all of your typical features are present. Highlighting, searching, fonts, brightness, animations, sharing, and other details are found throughout. What really makes the service stand out, in my opinion, is the recommendation engine.

You’ll have to see it in person but I think you’ll appreciate the manner in which it learns you and your habits. Think in terms of how Netflix knows your movies and show preferences and can offer up recommendations and you’ll understand where it’s going. In fact, one of the guys who helped put this together comes from the Ensemble team. Another cool, semi-useful, feature is the ability to pair any two books together to see what their “baby” would look like. This is a unique way of discovering your next read and something that helps separate them from others.

You’ll find that eReatah operates as a beta service right now but everything I’ve come across feels fleshed out. Take a look at their website, read up on Google Play, and give it a shot. If you like it, and recommend it to others, you can earn $5 credit every time!

Google makes Quickoffice available for free to everyone
Sep 19th 2013, 20:14, by Scott Webster

Good Guy Google announced on Thursday that it is making Quickoffice free to anyone and everyone. As part of Google’s portfolio for the last year, it has grown and matured new features. But, seeing that not everyone is using Google Drive for documents and files, Google recently decided to make Quickoffice mobile apps free for business customers. Today, however, it is available to all.

You can get the free Quickoffice app on Google Play and in the App Store. Simply sign in with your Google Account to start editing Microsoft Office Excel, Word and PowerPoint files on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet. Quickoffice is integrated with Google Drive so you can safely and easily store and access your files across devices.

Those of you who sign into your Google Account from within Quickoffice before September 26 will earn an extra 10GB of Drive storage at no cost. Said storage will be available for a two year period.

HTC One Case Review Madness Week: Speck CandyShell Grip
Sep 19th 2013, 20:00, by Justin Marden

We love to bring you reviews of all kinds of accessories. This week, we've got quite a few HTC One cases to play with, so we'll be bringing you a few reviews every day. We're calling this the HTC One Case Review Madness Week. So what are we waiting for? Let's go!

The hits just keep coming, and today we’ll take a look at Speck’s CandyShell Grip. The Grip is essentially like the original CandyShell, but with the added comfort and support of rubberized grips on the back, hence the name.

The CandyShell Grip follows the same basic design as the CandyShell, with one major difference. Speck incorporated lines of rubberized material (the same material that comprises the inside layer of the fused hybrid case) to give users a stronger grip. This was a great touch on Speck’s part, as one of the issues that I had with the CandyShell was the lack of a strong grip.

In addition to the added rubber grooves, Speck has included another color option with the CandyShell Grip. You can get the Grip in Black/Slate, White/Black, Pool Blue/Deep Sea Blue, and Raspberry/Nimbus Grey. This gives users a nice range of colors to choose from, which is always nice.

The lines themselves are placed in a smart way, and the design is both functional and visually appealing. They’re spaced apart enough that the color of the plastic shell shows through. This gives a nice contrast, except on the Black/Slate version, where both the lines and the case are black.

The rest of the case is fairly similar to the original CandyShell, with a two-tone design. The internal layer is rubberized silicone, which is fused with the hard plastic outer layer. That being said, because there is a small amount of extra rubber material on the back to create the grip, this case does weigh a tad more than its mostly plastic counterpart. But when it’s on the device, the difference isn’t noticeable at all.

I do have to admit that Speck improved the volume buttons a bit on the Grip. The CandyShell’s volume button covers were a bit hard to press, but the Grip fixes that with rubberized volume button covers that have more give in them. It’s a small improvement on the original, but it’s an improvement nonetheless.

While the CandyShell Grip isn’t much different from the regular CandyShell, I’m impressed with Speck’s initiative to give users more grip where they ask for it. I’d personally choose the Grip over the original CandyShell, both for the added grip and the contrast in colors. And at the same price ($34.95), where can you go wrong? So if the CandyShell Grip is more appealing than the CandyShell, you can grab one directly from Incipio.

Quickoffice3

In a blog post today, Google has announced that Quickoffice is now free to download for iOS and Android.  Google also concedes that not everyone has "gone Google" yet, and the '.doc' holdouts don't make it easy for those who have.

While Quickoffice has been available for free to Google Apps customers for some time, today marks the coming out party for a wider audience. Anyone with a Google account will be able to download Quickoffice for free.

Speaking of free, Google is also giving those who download the app by September 26th an extra 10GB of free Drive storage for two years.

Google acquired Quickoffice in 2012, which was originally designed to thwart Microsoft's proprietary treatment of Office documents. The app, which has been slowly making its way into Drive, is meant as a very crude viewer/editor for Office docs and spreadsheets. Quickoffice will only work with files stored in Drive, and those who may currently be using Quickoffice Pro or HD will need to download and use the new Quickoffice.

The app will also give users the ability to create .ZIP folders, as well as view Powerpoint files and charts in Excel spreadsheets.

The app can be downloaded from the Play Store, and even comes with a handy widget for quick access to your favorite files.

Google makes QuickOffice free for all, dishes out 10GB of free Google Drive space

quickoffice

Google hit QuickOffice fans with some really good news today — it’s free! No strings attached, no questions asked, you can go and download QuickOffice from the Google Play Store (and on iOS) without paying a dime. To top that off, Google is offering 10GB of free space for two years for anyone who syncs their Google Drive account with QuickOffice. You’ll have to do that by September 26, 2013 if you want to take advantage, though, so don’t take too long to do that (even if you aren’t planning on using QuickOffice much).

We’ve been wondering when Google would look to flex their muscle with the app after buying it back in June, and I guess we finally have our answer. You might be wondering why Google would have such a big interest in QuickOffice when they have Google Drive.

The main reason is that Google Drive doesn’t handle all Microsoft Office documents. The internal editor can only fully handle documents that were created with Drive. We fully believe Google is working to integrate QuickOffice with Google Drive, but for now this is the two-pronged solution they’ll be offering up to everyone. Get over to the Google Play Store for your download if you’re interested.

While the Motorola Moto X is still relatively fresh from its release across multiple carriers, the selection of cases is still pretty minimal.
