LG G2 tips and tricks: Long-press the volume buttons for app shortcuts
Sep 19th 2013, 21:27, by Phil Nickinson

LG G2

The LG G2 brings with it some interesting new features. Chief among them is the moving of the power button and volume buttons to the rear of the phone. Used in conjunction with the "Knock-on" feature for turning on the display, it brings (somewhat) of a sense of normalcy to a very different phone.

But there's a bit of added functionality that we'd recommend you not forget about — and that brings us back to those rearward-facing volume buttons.

A few weeks ago, rumblings of a new, flatter Google logo were making their rounds. The logo refresh had a very sparse feel, with a revamped color palette and less shading across the letters. The font was slightly tweaked as well, giving it a very — dare I say — iOS7 feel.

While a rumor at the time, it's now a reality. Via their blog, Google has announced the refined logo, as well as a change to the navigation bar. Gone is the black bar running along the top of your browser window; you will now be able to find all your favorite Google items via a menu, towards the right of the screen.

The new menu has been available to some Chrome OS users for a few weeks, with your Google+ posting and Gmail displayed outside of the menu, along with (curiously) image search. The menu houses all the other things that would be in the black bar menu, and mimics the Chrome OS app drawer icon.

In a further step toward encouraging more social interaction via Google+, there is a "share" tab, which will allow for a quick post to your Google+ account. Like sharing from within Google's social layer, you can share pictures, videos, or add an event. Mr. Jingles, the Google+ notification icon, is also there to let you know who is trying to reach you.

The changes are set to roll out to users over the coming weeks, and are a nice compliment to the design changed Google has made with many of their mobile apps.

Sony Xperia Z1

The Sony Xperia Z1 can do just about anything you want, from underwater photos and video to live social sharing. To highlight those points, Sony has come up with a new video for the Z1, said to be part of a massive marketing effort kicking off tomorrow.

In the video, Sony craftily showcases both the utility and nuance of the operating system. Functions like Timeshift burst — which acts like a quick shutter on a traditional camera — are nice, but knowing how photo selection works on screen is also really useful.

While the advertising spot focusses heavily on the camera, it also showcases gaming and Sony's Walkman service. As the tagline suggests, it really is the best of Sony, for the best of you.

XperiaBlog notes the ad was filmed in Barcelona, and will see over 25 markets. Availability information for the US remains elusive for the device, though it is available for preorder across Europe.

HP announces four new Android-powered tablets
Sep 19th 2013, 20:14, by Andrew Martonik

HP Slate 8 ProHP Slate 7 Extreme

Four new tablets in three different sizes to fill out HP's Android lineup

Along with a whole grouping of other laptops, tablets and convertibles, HP announced four new Android tablet offerings today covering multiple screen sizes and feature sets. First up are the HP Slate 7 HD and Slate 10 HD, which are your standard run of the mill 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, both with 1280x800 displays, dual-core processors, 9 hours of quoted battery life, Beats Audio and 200MB per month of free mobile data from T-Mobile for 2 years.

Next up is the Slate 7 Extreme, which packs a Tegra 4 quad-core processor but the same 1280x800 7-inch display as HP's other same-sized offerings. You do get a stylus in the box as well, but no special digitizer with the screen to take advantage of features like pressure sensitivity.

Then we come to the Slate 8 Pro, which is a slightly larger device, also with a Tegra 4 quad-core processor inside. The tablet is in a 4:3 aspect ratio with a 7.98-inch display at 1600x1200 resolution, and also packs 8MP rear and 2MP front cameras. The Slate 8 Pro also has an SDcard slot and HDMI out.

Gameloft's Total Conquest brings epic battles to the Play Store
Sep 19th 2013, 20:40, by Cory Gunther

Just a few days ago Gameloft announced that their new game Total Conquest was coming to Android and iOS later this month. Today though it appears that the day is now, because it’s available as we speak on the Google Play Store. Check out their launch video with more details below.

Screen Shot 2013-09-19 at 1.38.20 PM

Total Conquest is an exciting and action-packed strategy game set during the time of the Roman Empire. Not only is it from that time, but you’ll be able to train and control an entire Roman Empire army. How cool is that? We first got a look at the game at E3, but today it’s available for everyone on both Android and iOS.

Don’t call it a Clash of the Clans knockoff either. Total Conquest has tons of options and upgrades. Users will be able to Hire, train and upgrade 10 different unit types, each with a specific role. You can battle players around the world, or enjoy the solo campaign mode like most games. Without saying more, take a peek at their launch video.

Build up that army and fight off the rebels in this action-packed game. Sadly they don’t use Google Games, but you can invite friends with Facebook. iOS users can use the Game Center though. We’re not sure why they didn’t use Google Games to help out.

As expected this is another freemium title from Gameloft, but for those interested you can enjoy it right now from the link below.

Kamcord reveals in-game recording for Android
Sep 19th 2013, 20:26, by Robert Nelson

Kamcord has had in-game recording tools available for iOS developers, and while they have been working towards and Android release, it wasn’t until today that the good news arrived. Simply put, Kamcord has announced a new Android SDK that will allow Android developers to add similar options in their games. This apparently, has been a work in progress with some of the effort going into making sure they were able to allow for recording without any performance hits.

kamcord-in-game-recording-android-540

Time to get to this point aside, what this means now is an available SDK for Android developers. This is still being touted as a beta offering. Kamcord founder Aditya Rathnam did suggest there was plenty of interest from Android developers and has said they expect the first round of games to arrive “in a couple of weeks.” While this SDK will allow developers to set up in-game recording (an additional feature) — there is another potential perk for them.

That perk comes in the form of additional chatter about the game within the social community. You see, aside from recording the gameplay, users playing Kamcord-equipped games are also able to share those videos out on social sites. We suspect the potential will vary from game to game, however this could build up a whole other community for some games.

Anyway, while Android users are waiting for this type of in-game recording to arrive, the folks at Kamcord are touting 1 billion recordings with 1 million of those having been shared out. Otherwise, those developing for Android can sign up to be a part of the release and Kamcord has said this can be integrated in 30 minutes or less. And perhaps more important is that it can be integrated without any performance loss.

Android 5.0 concept video has us dreaming beyond KitKat
Sep 19th 2013, 19:32, by Cory Gunther

Earlier this year we showed you guys some neat Android 5.0 concept images by some creative Android lovers before 4.4 KitKat was official, but today we have something even better. A stunning and impressive video has just appeared with a better sense of design and direction in line with Google, and Google Now, and it has us pretty excited. Even if it’s only a fake fan-made concept video.

Screen Shot 2013-09-19 at 12.12.19 PM

A guy named Craig Tuttle has released a quick and rather exciting video on YouTube showing his thoughts and vision for Android 5.0 Lollipop, or whatever Google might call it. He plays off the KitKat, Key Lime Pie and Android 5.0 thing at the end, but we’re more interested in what he’s come up with. It’s so impressive we’d love to see it in Android.

With the updates to Google Maps, Google Keep, YouTube and more we know Google is headed in this Now “cards” direction, and Craig shows us what a deeply integrated Google Now cards system could look like. His Google Now unified notification pull-down bar is excellent, and so is the new white font. Well, we like everything we’re seeing, so take a peek below.

You’ll quickly notice the Holo-blue colors have been replaced with white, and the entire UI has a white-out or opaque white design. We’ve actually heard this in a rumor or two, but will have to wait and see what Google actually does with Android 4.4 and 5.0 when that time comes.

We aren’t expecting too many major changes with the minor update to Android 4.4 KitKat, but surely 5.0 will bring drastic changes to the look and feel. The Google Now additions seem somewhat realistic, and we thought this was certainly worth sharing with you all. Thoughts?

Quickoffice relaunched by Google, price drops and includes 10GB Drive perk
Sep 19th 2013, 19:13, by Robert Nelson

Back in April Google released the Google Apps edition of Quickoffice in the Play Store. This app was released for free, but the use was limited to those who were paying Google Apps for Business subscribers. At the time Quickoffice remained priced at $14.99 and $19.99 for the Pro and Pro HD versions. Well, flash forward till the present day and Quickoffice has been relaunched and is now available for free — for everyone.

quickoffice-02

The newly launched Quickoffice can be found in the Play Store where it sits with support for tablets and smartphones. Well, provided they are running Android 2.2. or later. In addition to Google dropping the price, they also rolled the app out with a new icon, which bears resemblance to the Google Drive icon. And perhaps a bit nicer, the app also has some new features.

quickoffice-01

Google noted how the new Quickoffice allows the user to create .ZIP folders and also view charts in Excel and PowerPoint files. Of course, the existing features remain which mean you will be able to attach files to emails, open and view PDF files and create/edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. Quickoffice users can also access files from their device and from Google Drive.

Sticking with the connection to Drive, Google has a bonus for those who install the app and sign-in using their Google account credentials before September 26th — free storage. Those who follow up with this will get an extra 10GB of Google Drive storage. This extra free storage will come in addition to the currently available 15GB and Google has said it will be added sometime in the “next few weeks.”
