Hulu Plus optimized for smattering of Android tablets

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 12:57 PM PDT

Hulu today announced that they have optimized their HuluPlus Android application for a limited number of tablets. Joining the HTC Flyer and Vizio 8" tablet are a handful of offerings from Motorola, Toshiba, LG, Asus, and Acer.  The updated and optimized app includes a new-look user interface that Hulu refers to as "trays".  After just a few moments with the app we found it to be intuitive and easy to learn.

Strangely enough we found that our Motorola Xoom was not listed as supported however the ZTE Optik worked just fine.  Of course we were advised that it was not supported the moment we opened it up.  Nevertheless it was showing up in Google Play Store and worked for us in the end.

  • Acer Iconia
  • Asus Eee Pad Transformer
  • Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime
  • LG G-Slate
  • Motorola Xoom
  • Motorola XYBoard 10.1
  • Toshiba Thrive
  • HTC Flyer (previous)
  • Vizio 8" tablet (previous)

Download Hulu Plus for your Android tablet from the Google Play Store.  The app itself is free however there's a monthly recurring $7.99 charge for membership.

Android reportedly earned Google $540M over four years

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 12:25 PM PDT

Google has generated roughly $543 million in revenue from 2008 though 2011, according to reports and estimates. The numbers come from Charles Arthur of the Guardian who based his figures by analyzing a settlement that Google offered to Oracle. While this might sound like a ridiculous amount of money on the surface it's merely a fraction of what Google earns on an annual basis.

The half billion figure is unofficial and isn't broken down by year so it's hard to chart growth in revenue. If you start out with $32M in 2008 and double the number each year you would still only arrive at $480 million. While the number itself might not represent anything significant at this point, the idea of doubling revenue every year certainly sounds good to us.

Droid Bionic 2 spotted in Asurion enrollment form

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 12:04 PM PDT

If the countless delays of the original Droid Bionic weren't enough to keep Motorola and Big Red away from a sequel, they're even more determined than we thought. The Droid Bionic 2 was spotted in an Asurion enrollment form, and we all have a few questions to ask. Since Asurion is a device insurance service, our first thought is that the Bionic 2 must already exist, since there's the option to buy insurance for it.

Of course, there is always the Droid Bionic that was released without a 16GB MicroSD card, which could be the device Asurion is pointing to. If that's not the case, then we'll most likely see some more leaks in the near future. In the case of a Bionic 2, we're not getting our hopes up for a launch anytime before November, based on the history of the original.

So is anyone else haunted by memories of the Bionic's delays with this latest news? Think Motorola should move on to bigger and better things? Sound off in the comments!

T-Mobile making noise around Android 4.0 updates for Sensation 4G, Amaze 4G

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 10:39 AM PDT

T-Mobile has announced, albeit unofficially, that their HTC Amaze 4G and HTC Sensation 4G will be soon seeing Android 4.0 updates.  The news comes by way of T-Mobile support pages for each device and stops short of giving us expected dates for rollout.

HTC has already committed to an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for both handsets so this would not be considered news in and of itself.  The takeaway here is that T-Mobile appears to be readying things on their side and could be ready to pull the trigger.  As of right now, there have been a very low number of smartphones updated to Android 4.0 so we're fully expecting a floodgate over the next few weeks and months.

T-Mobile to release HTC One S on April 22, rumors suggest

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 08:40 AM PDT

It's no secret that T-Mobile will be offering a version of the HTC One S as the carrier has already officially committed to it.  What is a secret, however, is when we'll actually see the smartphone arrive at retail stores around the country.  According to a newly leaked screen shot, T-Mobile will be making their HTC One S available less than a month from now on Aprill 22.  The source of the leak, TmoNews has a very solid track record when it comes to this sort of thing so we're going to assume this one is legit.  As such, we might expect T-Mobile to make an announcement of date and price in the next couple of weeks.

Amazon releases Kindle Fire v6.3 update

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 08:03 AM PDT

Amazon has announced that a new firmware updates is available for their Android-powered Kindle Fire.  If you're among one of the millions of users who own one of these tablets then you'd be wise to check out the update.

There's quite a bit of detail for the update however we're not going to break everything down.  Should you want to read the full list of updates then that's but a link away!

  • Sharing: Customers will be able to easily share favorite passages and notes from their books directly from Kindle Fire, without even leaving the book.
  • Book Extras:  Book Extras make it easy for customers to see supplemental material about the book they are reading, without even leaving the book. Customers can view descriptions of characters, a glossary of common terms used in the book, information on the authors and common locations referenced in the book, and more.
  • Archive of Personal Documents: Customers' personal documents will be stored in the Amazon Cloud and available for re-download at any time from the Documents tab on Kindle Fire.
  • Print Replica Textbooks: Students can buy thousands of print replica textbooks to read on their Kindle Fire and save up to 60% off the list price of the print textbook.
  • Reading View for Amazon Silk: When invoked by the customer, Silk will load the body of the page in a reading-optimized, single screen view (even for multi-page articles). The full page is still available in the background, allowing the reader to easily toggle back to a traditional view to see other interesting features on the page.
  • Movie Rentals: The rental period for movie rentals that are downloaded to Kindle Fire now starts when a customer starts watching the movie, rather than when a customer starts downloading the movie.
  • Additional Enhancements: This update will also bring some of the features customers have requested, including faster re-connect of Wi-Fi after Kindle Fire has been asleep, and general performance enhancements.

If you don't know what version of software your Kindle Fire is running you can quickly find out by going to Quick Settings>More>Device>. If you see "Current version: 6.3," then you are golden, Pony Boy.  If not, then all you have to do is connect to a Wi-Fi network with a fully charged battery.  Tap Sync from this screen and everything else takes care of itself.

Google deploys Android 4.0.4 to select devices

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 07:33 AM PDT

Google announced late yesterday that they have begun deploying a new version of Android to a handful of smartphones and tablets.  According to a post on the Google+ account for the Android team, Ice Cream Sandwich is rolling out to UMTS/GSM Nexus S, Xoom Wi-Fi, and HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus devices.  To be a little clearer, this is not the Verizon model of the Galaxy Nexus nor is it the 4G LTE-capable Xoom. Nor is it the Sprint Nexus S 4G.

We've started rolling out Android 4.0.4, Ice Cream Sandwich, to UMTS/GSM Nexus S, Xoom Wi-Fi, and HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus devices, and we'll be rolling it out to more devices in the coming weeks. Some of you will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich for the first time, while others will be receiving an update to your existing Ice Cream Sandwich experience with stability improvements, better camera performance, smoother screen rotation, improved phone number recognition and more.

It's difficult to say for certain as to when some of these other devices see their Android 4.0 updates but the hardcore users seem to be growing restless.  As for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, new rumors are now suggesting that it will actually see a 4.0.5 update in early April.

Sprint to debut EVO One at NY Event on April 4?

Posted: 29 Mar 2012 06:53 AM PDT

Details surfaced late yesterday which indicate that Sprint will debut their version of the HTC One X in the form of an EVO successor.  Pretty much confirming our suspicions all along, the handset announcement for April 4 will be flagship for each player involved.  As to what the features and details will be remains to be seen, however some early specs have arrived online.  If true, we can expect to see a great battery life, plenty of storage, and a beautiful, large display.  Oh, and the kickstand is allegedly set to return.

Keep in mind that all of this is rumored and unofficial, and actually varies a bit from what HTC is doing with other One models.  Nevertheless, the general takeaway here is that we should expect an EVO successor that draws from the HTC One design.

  • Android 4.0 with 4.0 sense
  • 4.7 inch, 720p AMOLED screen
  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor (Snapdragon S4)
  • 2650 mAh non-removal battery
  • 16GB internal memory
  • microSD card slot
  • 8-megapixel camera with 2.0 front-facing camera
  • LTE connectivity
  • Beats by Dre audio
  • Black and red chassis
  • Kickstand

There are conflicting reports for these specifications, notably in the display size and technology.  Some have indicated that we should look for a Super LCD whereas others are expecting AMOLED.
