Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Now On 1.2% of Devices, Ice Cream Sandwich On 20.9% Posted: 05 Sep 2012 07:12 PM PDT
It’s that time again, the beginning of the month when Google officially updates their Android distribution chart. So, what do see? Well, a lot of devices finding themselves updated with Ice Cream Sandwich apparently. Last month, ICS was at nearly 16% and as of right now, has jumped all the way up to almost 21%. That’s a pretty big leap due in part to older devices finding themselves updated from Gingerbread (which fell to 57.5%, from the previous month’s 60.6%). Jelly Bean hasn’t been advancing quite as quickly, up now to 1.2%, a small increase over last month where it debuted at .8%. We’d expect that number to continue and rise as more devices are updated (and hopefully released) with the latest Android firmware. |
T-Mobile’s UNLIMITED Unlimited 4G Data Plan Is Now Live – Time To Modify Your Plan Posted: 05 Sep 2012 06:22 PM PDT
Isn’t it silly that we can’t just say “unlimited” and have it mean what it says? In any case, T-Mobile’s recently announced unlimited Unlimited Nationwide 4G data plan is now live on their official site. The new plan offers unlimited data without fear of data caps, overages or throttling. Now there’s nothing holding you back from consuming all the lewd content the web has to offer. T-Mobile customers who have already spoken with a CSR’s today have indicated that they were able to switch to the new plan without extending their current contract. Sounds almost too good to be true, but I’m about to call into T-Mobile myself and see if I qualify (without having to pay extra or extending my term). Cheers, everyone! [T-Mobile] |
Amazon Phone Reportedly Being Announced Tomorrow Alongside New Kindle Fire and E-Reader Posted: 05 Sep 2012 05:16 PM PDT
Tomorrow, Amazon will mostly announce their brand new Kindle Fire and Kindle e-readers to the world. But if you though that was all they had up their sleeve, wait until you hear this. According to sources at The Verge, it seems Amazon could have something their very own “one more thing” moment planned for tomorrow’s press event and will involved the unveiling of a Kindle phone. Sources say the device is still very early but will run on the same modified Android 4.0 OS as its bigger brother. With that, we can’t be sure sure if they will have a hands-on with the device, or if it will remain behind glass. We wont have to wait much longer to find out. I’ll be up bright and early tomorrow morning bringing you guys the latest of what I admittedly thought was going to be a snooze-fest. Now, with the possibility of a Kindle Phone… things just got interesting. |
Sprint’s Leaked Playbook Reveals Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G Receiving Jelly Bean Starting Tomorrow Posted: 05 Sep 2012 04:06 PM PDT
Good news for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G owners on Sprint. A Phandroid tipster just sent us the above leaked image from Sprint’s employee Playbook confirming that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is due to rollout tomorrow, September 6th. This will bring the software version up to FH05 for Galaxy Nexus users, and JRO03R for those with the Nexus S 4G. By now, you already know exactly what to expect with Jelly Bean, so mark it on your calendars, folks! It’s also said that you wont be able to pull OTA on your own, and will instead have to wait for Google to push out the update to your device. But I’m sure that wont stop you from trying. Cheers! Thanks, _epic! |
Intel Powered Motorola RAZR M Launching In The UK on Sept 18th Posted: 05 Sep 2012 03:52 PM PDT
Well, the folks Pocket-Lint got word from Motorola that the plan is to release the UK version of the device that will swap out the Qualcomm chip, in favor of an Intel one. Expect everything else about the RAZR M to remain the same when it becomes available in the UK on September 18th. |
Photoshop Touch update brings more languages, effects, higher resolution editing, and more Posted: 05 Sep 2012 03:30 PM PDT Mobile photo editing buffs will probably be happy to know that Photoshop Touch has gotten a very sizable update in the Google Play Store. A quick download will net you two new languages — Russian and Brazilian Portuguese. Other new features include two new effects — shred and colorize — the ability to edit photos in up to 12 megapixels, smoother performance in the tutorial browser and file picker, new gestures for zooming, a pixel nudging mode for more precise editing, and more. $10 is not a bad price to ask for one of the most deep editing apps in mobile. Find it in the Google Play Store here. |
Motorola Droid RAZR M unboxed [Video] Posted: 05 Sep 2012 03:22 PM PDT You can pre-order it starting tonight, but for the general public the Motorola Droid RAZR M won’t be available until next week. Luckily, I’m not the general public and Motorola was kind enough to hook Phandroid up with the handset ahead of its launch. At $99, the M is the cheapest of the RAZR family yet it packs specs that are hardly outdated. On top of that, this handset doesn’t feel like a plastic toy. This phone features the same durable construction as other RAZR devices, including a Kevlar backing, and has some decent heft. Motorola and Verizon aren’t including any bells or whistles in the package, but the RAZR M by itself should suffice. We’ll be back with a more in-depth review later, but for now satisfy yourselves with this quick unboxing video. |
Rumor: HTC working on a 7-inch Flyer 2 Posted: 05 Sep 2012 03:00 PM PDT The original HTC Flyer was introduced to the world with some incredibly bad timing. It wasn’t a bad device, but with some Honeycomb-infused beasts on the horizon its Gingerbread base put a lot of people off from buying it. It seems they could be ready to introduce a true sequel to the device as Phone Arena is reporting that they’re readying a new 7 inch tablet. It will supposedly sport an HD display and will be powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, a Qualcomm S4 processor. It’ll also have a 3 megapixel on the back, a 1 megapixel on the front, and it’s poised to be as thin as a screw. HTC faces stiff competition from both Amazon and Google, both of which have attacked the tablet space with 7 inch variants of their own starting at $200. HTC will need to price this thing aggressively if they want any chance. Otherwise, their knack for advertising is going t have to come in mighty handy to convince anyone that they should go with them instead of these other two major players. Would you give HTC another shot for $200. |

First Look: Motorola Droid RAZR HD and Motorola Droid RAZR M [VIDEO] Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:49 PM PDT The Motorola Droid RAZR HD is the flagship model of a new RAZR lineup for Verizon that debuted today and also includes the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD and Motorola Droid RAZR M. All three devices center around a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and speedy Android optimizations, but the selling point of the RAZR HD is right in the name: its gorgeous 4.7-inch HD display. Spec-wise, the RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD are nearly identical, with a smaller 2,500mAh battery being the only difference better the non-MAXX and MAXX version. Holding true to its name, the RAZR HD is a skinny handset that makes even last year’s model look a bit bulky (the MAXX HD carries some added girth). Overall, the device is an improvement in every area, from software to hardware. The design is sleek and futuristic, the OS experience is clean, and everything really pops on the display. Check out our first-look video, which also includes footage of the RAZR M. Though smaller and priced more affordably, the RAZR M doesn’t cheat users in terms of power. We’ll have a bit more in-depth coverage on that device later (Motorola was kind enough to offer us one as a parting gift). The RAZR M is available next week for $99. The RAZR HD will be available closer to the holiday season in both black and white color options.

First Look: Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD [VIDEO] Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:41 PM PDT Motorola has just launched the successor to their Droid RAZR MAXX released earlier this year for Verizon. Though it won’t hit shelves for a few more months, the Droid RAZR MAXX HD is a worthy successor and should be a hit over the holidays. Featuring a nearly identical spec sheet to the Droid RAZR HD save for a battery capacity in excess of 3,000mAh, the MAXX HD offers all day battery life, tons of power, and a beautifully crisp 4.7-inch display. With all the same stylings including a durable Kevlar backing and Gorilla Glass display, it’s hard to imagine anyone wouldn’t want to choose the MAXX HD over the standard model. It’s only a hair thinner, and you can notice a difference in weight if you really are looking for it, but the extra size is hardly noticeable. Still, the RAZR HD is no slouch in the battery department either. Some new features such as a quick settings menu accessed by swiping all the way to the left and Chrome as the default browser add some value to Motorola’s customized interface running over Ice Cream Sandwich (a Jelly Bean update is planned), but with Google running the show at Moto these days, we still wish we could see a transition to stock Android as the norm. Check out the video above for a quick rundown of all the specs and features you need to know. We’ll be back with a full review closer to launch. |
Global versions of new RAZR phones inbound Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:37 PM PDT It’s easy to forget that today’s announcements didn’t just pertain to Verizon’s upcoming crop of RAZR devices. Alongside their US-exclusive DROID variants Motorola has confirmed that we’ll be seeing global versions of the Motorola RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD, and RAZR M, as well. While those of us in the US will likely need to import them to use on GSM carriers, customers in Europe, Asia, South America, and Canada will likely be able to grab these through contract plans as well as full price purchases. We can’t say for sure where, exactly, it’s going yet, but at least we know they’re coming. |
Motorola promises developer phones, Jelly Bean, and an incentive for those left behind Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:22 PM PDT Motorola has just announced that most of their smartphones released in 2011 — and likely all the ones released in 2012 — will be receiving Jelly Bean by the end of this year. That’s great! Seriously, it is. While all the other folks are banking on using Ice Cream Sandwich as an intermediate update to hold folks over, Motorola will instead be funneling all of their assets for update development into Jelly Bean. Waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich before going over to Jelly Bean could have meant a wait well into 2013. But unfortunately a couple of Motorola’s devices released that year are technically unable to handle Jelly Bean. For those users, they’re offering a $100 credit to anyone who trades their incapable 2011 Motorola smartphone in toward an upgrade to some of Motorola’s newest offerings. It’s a lot more than we could have asked for, and for that we thank Motorola for giving users a way to enjoy the latest and greatest without having to pay for it themselves entirely. Finally, Motorola has made a commitment to bringing out developer devices for those who wish to tinker with Android. While its bootloader unlock tool should be available for select smartphones coming out this year and beyond, developer edition devices will be ideal for those who want a certain phone that a carrier is blocking bootloader unlocks for. These devices tend to be offered off-contract, but Motorola hasn’t released anymore details as to how they’re going to handle this program. And those were just a few of the many exciting announcements Motorola made in New York City this week. Don’t forget that they also announced the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and its MAXX variant, as well as the Motorola DROID M. Hit those links for more detailed information on those announcements, and let us know if you’d be willing to take advantage of the device trade-in offer if your Motorola devices ends up being left out of the loop. |
Motorola DROID M officially announced, available next week for $99.99 Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:39 AM PDT Motorola has officially announced the Motorola DROID M. They’re calling it a compact, affordable smartphone that doesn’t sacrifice power as is normally the case with phones of this size and price. The 4.3 inch display will be ideal for those who aren’t a fan of the ever-growing standard of big screen sizes these days, and a nice 2,000mAh battery should deliver decent usage time. It also has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8 megapixel camera that shoots full HD video, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, NFC, 4G LTE, Android 4.0 (Jelly Bean coming by the end of the year), and more. Verizon is releasing the device next week for $100, but you can pre-order yours today at 5pm eastern if you’re feeling the need to pounce on this one as soon as you can. We’ll be getting some hands-on time with this thing in a bit, but feel free to read on for the full press details.

Motorola officially announces the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:27 AM PDT The Motorola DROID RAZR was an excellent first device for the reboot of Motorola’s storied mobile phone line, and today they unveiled the next step. It’s the long-rumored Motorola DROID RAZR HD, and it has a 4.7 inch 72op HD display that has 78% more pixels than the DROID RAZR, and 85% better color saturation than the iPhone 4S. It also comes with 32GB of storage. Motorola is boasting 16 hours of talk time thanks to the 2,500mAh battery, but there’s also a MAXX variant — the same phone, except with a more beefy battery inside. They’re promising 27 hours of audio streaming over 4G, 10 hours of constant video playback, and 21 hours of continuous talk time. Other specs include 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB RAM, an 8 megapixel HD camera with a 1.3 front-facing camera, a microSD card slot, and the other usual bits and pieces you come to expect. Verizon couldn’t give us a solid release date to rely on but have assured us that it will be out before the holiday season. Read on for full press details, and be sure to stick around a little bit later as we deliver our hands-on impressions from New York City.
