Samsung seeks injunction against LG Display to prevent use of stolen technology Posted: 05 Sep 2012 03:58 PM PDT A story that sounds like the plotline from an industrial espionage thriller with hidden thumb drives, secretly taken photos, and corporate spies, entered the Seoul Central District Court when Samsung Mobile Display, a subsidiary of Samsung, filed a request for an injunction against LG Display. Samsung alleges LG used or passed “leaked” information on to third parties after Samsung's own employees or former employees stole the information when given access to a plant to inspect for equipment defects. The technology in question involves Samsung's OLED screen technology, especially a forthcoming 55-inch AMOLED TV screen. Samsung alleges LG had access to 18 "confidential technologies" and 21 other items of detailed information related to the technologies. In addition to the injunction, Samsung is asking for 1 billion won (≈ $880,500 USD) for each instance where LG used the technology or passed it on to a third party. Samsung currently controls about 99% of the world OLED market. LG claims they use a different technology for their display screens and therefore have no need or interest in Samsung's technology. Neither Samsung nor LG Display provided any comment or response to the filing. source: c|net

Original Samsung Galaxy Note to get Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III features via software update Posted: 05 Sep 2012 02:05 PM PDT With the launch of the Galaxy Note II just around the corner, the last thing we’d expect for the original Samsung Galaxy Note – besides a full 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade – is feature-rich update. However, an update is indeed rolling out today for the international version of the Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) packing a host of features and UI enhancements plucked straight from the Galaxy S III and Note II. The update is still based on Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), however the updated features themselves are the stars of the show here. International Note owners will now get to enjoy features like “Pop up Play” (mentioned in the Galaxy Note II link above), a Note II-style 3D gallery, the Galaxy S III launcher, and S Cloud contact backup just to highlight a few. This official update to version XXLRQ can be grabbed either over-the-air or through Kies for unlocked Galaxy Note devices in Germany. Other territories should follow suit with the update in the coming weeks. source: XDA Forums

Motorola unveiled two special devices this afternoon in New York City. The flagship of the two by far is the DROID RAZR MAXX HD, which comes with an HD (1280 x 720) display. It has the same 3300mAh battery found on the original RAZR MAXX, but the screen size is bigger at 4.7-inches. Other notables are a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera, and 2MP front camera. It will come with 32GB of storage and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Next up is the DROID RAZR HD, which is essentially the same phone, but with a smaller battery, 2530mAh. It will only be offered with 16GB of storage, but you will get your choice of white or black for the body. The RAZR MAXX HD on the other hand, will only be offered in black. Hands on with the DROID RAZR M [Video] Posted: 05 Sep 2012 01:10 PM PDT Motorola just announced the DROID RAZR M smartphone and we immediately got some hands-on time with it. As you can see, the device is incredibly compact while in hand, yet the display really pops out thanks to the enormous real-estate available on the phone’s 4.3-inch screen. Also highlighted is Motorola’s Quick Settings access function, which aims to simplify a user’s settings on the phone. The other highlight is Ice Cream Sandwich operating in smooth, buttery fashion that’s complimented with the now default Chrome Browser and Amazon apps pre-loaded. All of those features are literally crammed into a compact manner of Corning Glass and Kevlar goodness. For those of you itching to grab one of the hottest phones of the year, it’s available for pre-order today at 5:00pm either on Verizon’s website or in Verizon stores, but in the meantime, check out our hands-on video below to get a good feel of the full-screen phone.

Motorola Announces The DROID RAZR M, DROID RAZR HD And DROID RAZR MAXX HD Smartphones Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:00 PM PDT
Motorola has formally announced the three newest additions to the DROID RAZR family: the DROID RAZR M, DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD smartphones. Each smartphone has unique characteristics and features that aims to set it apart from the rest of the competition. Right off the bat, the DROID RAZR M is a device with a special 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display and almost no bezel, which effectively makes the device a full-screen smartphone. The device will feature Android Ice Cream Sandwich and be available on Verizon’s network for $99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate) and “coming soon” to other Asian Pacific markets. The other stars of the show also possess noteworthy features. The DROID RAZR HD is identified as the “most compact HD smartphone in its class”, while allowing for outstanding battery life. Motorola claims users of the device can watch up to 10 hours of movies and TV shows or 6 hours of surfing the web. Meanwhile, the DROID RAZR MAXX HD one-ups the DROID RAZR HD. Motorola highlights the device will provide 32 hours of performance, including up to 10 hours of YouTube HD content or 8 hours of web browsing. Very mpressive indeed. The DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD will be “available soon” in the Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and Latin America. Each device will feature Gorilla Glass, Kevlar and Google’s Chrome Browser as the standard browser preloaded. And yes… each device is confirmed for the Jelly Bean update. We know you all are itching for more details, so be sure to hit the break for the full press release from Motorola.

Dennis Woodside of Motorola is highlighting the success of the Motorola brand. He starts by highlighting its history developing the mobile phone as we know it by describing the DynaTac, which was a 2.5 lb device that allowed for 20 minutes of actual talk time in 1973. He also talks about the big bets for Motorola: speed, power management (knowing how to get the most power out of thin devices) and of course, Android (turn-by-turn nav, multitasking, etc.). Any questions that the new Motorola devices are intent on revolutionizing the smartphone… again? After all— “the new Motorola starts today”.

Motorola is already seeing a heavy hand from Google as Chairman Eric Schmidt is giving the keynote at the Motorola event today. He continues to highlight the success of the Android ecosystem by confirming there are “1.3 million Android activations” per day in reference to Android smartphones, while adding Android tablets are also growing at a tremendous pace. Looks like Google is saying any remaining or lingering doubts about Android’s success can now be put to rest.

We don’t need to live in suspense anymore gang. After anticipating what was thought to be a breakthrough device with a certain edge-to-edge screen at the upcoming even, we now know what Motorola has concocted for consuming pleasure: the DROID RAZR M and DROID RAZR HD smartphones. The DROID RAZR M smartphone is confirmed to only have a qHD display, while the DROID RAZR HD will almost certainly have a larger screen (along with ColorBoost technology, perhaps?). So now that the cat is out of the bag, it shouldn’t be too much longer before we know the complete details of each device headed to Verizon stores. source: evleaks (Twitter)

Nokia send out mysterious tweet, hints at possible Android hardware Posted: 05 Sep 2012 10:02 AM PDT Nokia may be dedicated to Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, but the Finnish company sent out a rather interesting tweet earlier today, hinting at the unlikely possibility of new Android hardware. The tweet reads: “Breakfast in New York on a big day for us! Today we dine on Jellybeans” Does this mean the company is going to unveil an Android handset at its New York City event today? Probably not. But, with the company losing valuable market share and its Symbian platform quickly (and painfully) dying out, it would make sense. Instead, it seems as though the company is teasing us Android fans. Even if Nokia doesn’t announce some new Android-based hardware in the Big Apple today, we’ll be there for Motorola’s press event. So, stay tuned for the latest coverage. Source: Twitter
