OtterBox Defender Series case review - multi-layer protection and a locking holster clip Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:53 PM PDT The OtterBox Defender Series case for the HTC One X offers three solid layers of protection in a tight, compact package. Beyond the usual hard plastic/silicone skin hybrid set-up, there’s also a screen protector integrated with the inner case. This means no more futzing around with sticky screen protectors, and having to line things up perfectly or squeezing out air bubbles. The case comes with a clip-style holsters that rotates a full 360 degrees while keeping your phone securely in place - face-up or face-down, whatever works for you. |
Motorola preparing another Jelly Bean update for the Motorola Xoom WiFi Posted: 28 Aug 2012 03:41 PM PDT Look, lets be honest here. The Motorola Xoom WiFi is pretty much a device like the OG Droid that refuses to die. Aside from the Nexus 7 and the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T, it's the only tablet to have Android Jelly Bean on it and now, Motorola has sent out invites for yet another update for it: Thanks for joining the Motorola Feedback Network. We are inviting owners of the Motorola WiFi Xoom (U.S. only) to participate in an early preview of a new software release, and provide feedback. If you are not currently using a Motorola WiFi Xoom, please excuse and ignore this email. So yeah, there you have it. Another Jelly Bean update will soon be rolling out to the U.S. Motorola Xoom WiFi. As of right now, there is no indication of what changes it will bring but we'll be sure to let you all know as soon as we know. Thanks, Chad! |
Gogo inflight Wifi coming to Canada next year Posted: 28 Aug 2012 01:26 PM PDT We're more than a year out from when we actually need to write this post, but whatever. When it comes to Canada, our motto is better get while the gettin's good. (At least that's what our Canada motto would be, if we actually had one.) Anyhoo. Gogo, the company that brings you that sweet, sweet Wifi in the sky here in the States, will begin work later this year to bring that same nectar over the Canadian skies. Work starts on the ground with the construction of cell sites later this year. The whole thing's expected to be up and running by the end of 2013. So, yeah. We're a little ahead of ourselves. There's no need yet to fire up the Gogo Android app anytime you cross the border. But trust us, it's never too early to get excited about Wifi at 35,000 feet. Source: Gogo |
Plume for Twitter updated with UI improvements and Facebook picture sharing Posted: 28 Aug 2012 12:22 PM PDT One of the top Twitter clients on Android, Plume (formerly Touiteur), has received a notable update in the Google Play Store today. The UI has been streamlined and now follows a similar metaphor to that of the latest Google+ app, which has a hidden side panel with less-used functions such as search, favorites and trending topics. This is a good addition, as a vast majority of users will be happy with just seeing their timeline, mentions and direct messages on the main screen. It gives Plume a bit more of a minimalist look that a lot of people are looking for in a Twitter client right now. The latest update also changes the UI to "better support 7-inch tablets" -- which we're going to go ahead and translate to "updated for Nexus 7". Plume has also added two pieces of functionality in the way of automatic draft save/restore and Facebook picture uploading. Drafts are important if you accidentally hit the back button after straining over a perfectly crafted 140 character tweet, and the ability to upload photos to Facebook can help cut the friction when putting up posts, saving you that extra step of opening a different app for each network (we all know how painful the Facebook app can be). If you haven't tried out Plume for Twitter before, it's been worth a look for a long time now and this update just makes it even better. You can grab it for free at the Google Play Store link above, then remove the ads for $4.99 if you're so inclined to do so. A couple screenshots of the updated phone UI can be found after the break. |

Reality Robotics Kickstarter wants you to be the robot Posted: 28 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT 4 inches high. Wirelessly controlled. Bugdroid. Need we say more?Reality Robotics, the company behind the likes of the nerd-friendly, Android-controlled TankBot, is back with another gadget, this one a little more near and dear to our hearts. A Kickstarter campaign has been launched for BERO -- Be The Robot. There are a number of models of the 4-inch BugDroids from which to choose. They've got tracks for legs, LEDs for eyes, and the headphones pulse to music. Plus there's a built-in speaker that will play music from an included storage card. Very cool. The different models will behave different. They're programmable, voice-activated -- and the whole thing is open-sourced. (Jerry is going nuts already, we imagine.) There are a dozen Kickstarter pledge levels, starting at $35 for a paperweight (basically the shell of a BERO with no electronics), all the way up to a $7,800 pledge that will send you to Hong Kong to see how these little guys are made. (There are only two of those available.) Hit the links below for more, and check out the gallery after the break for more color options. The BERO robots are expected to ship in late November. iOS funcationality will be added later, as well as integration with MP3 players and (possibly) Twitter. Source: Kickstarter, Be the Robot |
Official SkyDrive for Android app now available in the Google Play Store Posted: 28 Aug 2012 10:32 AM PDT It wasn't any secret that Microsoft was working on an official SkyDrive for Android app. In fact, it wasn't all that long ago they let us know it would soon be here and now, if you head on over to the Google Play Store you'll find it readily available for download. It has all the features you'd expect but in case you need a run down:
I've not really used SkyDrive in the past but now that there is an app for it, I'm more likely to go ahead and give it a try. Besides, who can really say now to free storage right? In total, Microsoft gives you 7GB for free so give it a go. |

Firefox for Android brings speedy and powerful update for tablets Posted: 28 Aug 2012 10:03 AM PDT If Chrome really isn't your browser of choice and you prefer Firefox, you'll be interested to know Mozilla has now released the latest update to the Google Play Store. This update targets tablets more so than anything else but it has plenty of all-around fixes included as well:
According to Mozilla, everything in this release is based on speed and performance so you should be able to notice pages opening faster, better panning and zooming and even improved startup times. The update is live now, so get to it. Source: Firefox |
Magisto arrives on Android, aims to take the frustration out of video editing Posted: 28 Aug 2012 09:31 AM PDT There is a lot of devices out there with great cameras for taking video. Chances are, you've taken some videos on your device and now have a bunch just hanging around. I say hanging around because video editing sometimes isn't always easy to do nor is it all that fun really. A new but well known app has now made its way to the Google Play Store and it aims to take some of the frustration of video editing for you. Just shoot and upload video from your device, choose a soundtrack and give your movie a title and the Magisto movie maker will automatically edit your movie for you.
We've yet to give it a go here but if you're looking to learn more or see it in action, you can jump below to view the video as well as read the full press release from Magisto. If you're having great results with it, drop a comment and let us know. |
T-Mobile Galaxy S2 software update available through Kies Posted: 28 Aug 2012 08:52 AM PDT For those of you still making use of a T-Mobile Galaxy S 2, it's time to grab your USB cable and fire up Kies as a new update has now been made available for your device. The change log is short and sweet but it certainly is interesting:
Bug fixes are expected but the inclusion of "ISIS/NFC" is the highlight there. As we know it, T-Mobile is a part of the NFC mobile payment group but until now they've not put out any sort of information when ISIS would become active on T-Mobile devices. At this point, it's hard to even know what they mean when they say ISIS support is included so if you managed to get the download installed, let us know in the comments or drop by the Android Central forums and share your findings. Nobex Radio review - a BlackBerry port with its work cut out Posted: 28 Aug 2012 08:44 AM PDT Earlier this summer Nobex Radio made its way onto Android after establishing itself as pretty much the only radio streaming application for BlackBerry. For the low, low price of free, users had access to thousands of traditional radio stations through a categorized, searchable database. No matter what the station, Nobex provided a listing of the songs that have been played recently, allowing you to look back and share particularly good tunes that come up. For $3.99/month, users can get in on the premium service, which provides access to stations outside your country, skips pre-roll audio ads, and a handful of other features. |
Nexus 7 gets a little Google homepage love Posted: 28 Aug 2012 07:51 AM PDT Ah, the big guns. Google today has put the Nexus 7 tablet square in the middle of its homepage. That's a page that gets a wee mount of traffic, as you can imagine. It's also a page that, aside from the infamous Google Doodles, doesn't often get clunked up with anything that might distract from Google's true sole purpose -- search. (You'll recall that the number of words on the page traditionally is limited to 28.) But there it is. "The playground is open," Google says. And the Nexus 7 (read our full review, by the way) is suddenly in front of a lot more eyeballs. Now some will argue that's a sign that the Nexus 7 isn't selling well. That's certainly a possibility. But then again, we have no idea what Google's sales projections are. Others will argue that it's Google promoting its products where it can. And there's precedent for this -- the original Nexus One got some homepage love as well. Hell, so did the original Motorola Droid. This has happened before, and it will all happen again. Still, this is a strategy Google doesn't use all that often. And not everybody's happy about it. As for us? It's a good thing. The more eyes on the Nexus 7, the better. End of line. MetroPCS gets the Coolpad Quattro for $149 Posted: 28 Aug 2012 05:41 AM PDT MetroPCS this morning announced it's carrying the CoolPad Quattro 4G, a 4-inch Android 2.3 smartphone. The Quattro 4G also sports a 1GHz processor, rear 3.2-megapixel camera and a VGA front-facing camera. The phone runs $149, and plans begin at $40 a month. MetroPCS, for a limited time, also is offering a $50 rebate on the second of any two 4G smartphones you purchase. (So if you buy two Quattros, the second would cost $99.) Source: MetroPCS |
Samsung Galaxy S3 gets a new range of colors Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:40 AM PDT Samsung this morning announced four new colors (OK, three new colors and the black one we already knew about) for the Galaxy S3. Officially, what you see here is "Amber Brown," "Garnet Red," "Sapphire Black" and "Titanium Gray." The new colors, Samsung says, follow in the "designed by nature" theme that's surrounded this phone from the outset. Each of the colors is said to "take their inspiration from the Earth's richest materials." (Jerry's hoping for a beer-colored phone already.) Samsung stresses, however, that the availability of colors will depend on your country, retailer and carrier. Source: Samsung |
Apple v. Samsung v. Apple jury foreman: 'It was very exciting' Posted: 28 Aug 2012 03:43 AM PDT We're just gonna let this sit here. Draw your own conclusion. (The hostess seems to be a little excited about all this, too.) That said, you'll also find this line 9:22 in: "The Android operating system, clear and of itself, was not something that infringed." John Lewis will sell Barnes & Noble Nook readers in the UK Posted: 28 Aug 2012 03:36 AM PDT We're slowing starting to get more details surrounding the long-awaited UK launch of Bares & Noble's Nook line. John Lewis will carry the Android-powered Nook Simple Touch and Simple Touch with GlowLight. There's still no word on the Nook Color and newer Nook Tablet, though BN does say the Touch devices will be the "first available." (The new nook.co.uk page still has the more traditional tablets pictured, but it also appears to be redirecting to U.S. content. So take that for what you will.) No word on pricing or availability, other than to expect them this fall. |
LG Optimus G is officially official Posted: 28 Aug 2012 03:12 AM PDT
Well, that didn't take long. Following the leak we saw just a couple days ago, LG has released information regarding the launch of its latest superphone, the Optimus G. The finalized pictures look just about the same as the leaks we saw, which we'd assume considering how quickly the release has come. It's always good to know for sure what you're getting though. The Optimus G is looking to be quite a speedy phone -- assuming LG can step up its software game -- with specs that are top of the line:
LG is saying the phone is set to release in Korea, LTE in tow, next month. A full global launch is expected by the end of the year, hopefully with the appropriate LTE bands for each market as well. Be sure to follow our continuing IFA coverage as we cover all of the latest and greatest in the Android world. Source: LG Newsroom |
Samsung introduces Drive Link driving companion app Posted: 27 Aug 2012 06:48 PM PDT Samsung has just introduced the Drive Link app for its devices. The basic idea of Drive Link is to provide a safe user interface and portal to the most commonly used applications on your phone while driving -- navigation, hands-free calling and listening to music. For navigation, you get full access to the phone's GPS and mapping features, allowing you to speak destinations or pull them up from text messages. Full hands-free calling and text-to-speech message reading are available in several languages. The Music portal gives access to all media stored on the device. If you're looking to do more than all of that while driving, you're probably not staying very safe behind the wheel. Samsung also points out that a device with Drive Link installed can provide the services directly, or even connect to your car's current infotainment system with the MirrorLink protocol, a standard embraced by the Car Connectivity Consortium. Drive link is making its debut on the international version of the Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3), with other devices coming later -- provided they are running Android 4.0 -- and will be available for download via Samsung Apps on your device in 21 countries worldwide, none of which is the good ol' U.S. of A.
