Will Google and Dish Network disrupt wireless industry? Posted: 16 Nov 2012 08:39 AM PST It could be a few years off, but Google and Dish Network may be looking to disrupt the wireless industry. How so? By partnering to launch their own wireless service that will “rival the networks” of dominant players like Verizon and AT&T. A new report out of Wall Street Journal advises that the two companies have been getting a bit cozy with each other and could be three to five years away from deploying a network. Of course all of this is subject to FCC and other regulations and should only be considered a rumor at this stage. Seeing as how things are coming from “people familiar with the matter” and neither Google nor Dish have said anything, it’s just speculation. Rumor or not, the idea of Google becoming a service provider is not all that far-fetched. The tech giant is already in the first stages of rolling out a broadband service and, thus far, things sound promising. Given that everyone knows the focus is on mobile, Google would be silly to not consider partnering with some industry players to push the agenda forward. Sony gets chatty about forthcoming flagship smartphone Posted: 16 Nov 2012 06:37 AM PST With around two months to go before the International CES kicks off, Sony has already started chatting up strategy. Mobile sales head Dennis van Schie recently spoke to Financial Times Deutschland where he indicated their upcoming flagship handset will compete with with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S III and Apple iPhone 5. Based on recent rumors and leaks, the Odin seems to be the most likely candidate for the moniker of Sony flagship. The specs are right but we fear the overall availability could hurt Sony’s chances of grabbing a bigger piece of that pie. They have yet to hit the United States with a large rollout or mult-carrier release, something at which both Samsung and Apple have become adept. As we see it, there are two parts to any potential success for Sony. First, they must deliver a top of the line hardware set with the most recent version of Android in a timely manner. Second, they need the help of multiple wireless providers. Anything less than that and Sony won’t be “competing” with Apple or Samsung.
