Samsung Stratosphere 2 dummy units now hitting retailers Posted: 08 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PST While not one of the most groundbreaking devices to be released this year, Samsung’s long-rumored Stratosphere 2 is expected to serve as a relatively decent entry-level handset on Verizon. A couple of images have revealed that dummy units for Samsung’s upcoming QWERTY slider are officially making their way to retailers across the country, signaling a launch that may not be too far off. The device is expected to feature a 4-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. As with all new devices released on Verizon, the handset will have access to the carrier’s nearly-completed 4G LTE network, boasting impressive data speeds. Pricing still remains up in the air, but we’re assuming $99 would be the sweet spot for what you’re getting here. Source: Droid-Life

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 04:45 PM PST Google has just announced the impending availability of Play Store Music and Movies for Google TV users in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada and Australia. Beginning November 13th, users in these countries will be able to rent or purchase movies, as well as browse hundreds of thousands of songs via Google’s official marketplace. This news will undoubtedly come as a much welcomed addition to the company’s vast array of content. There’s still no official word on why it took this long for the content to make its way to other countries, though we’re sure it had something to do with pesky licensing agreements. So, what shows, movies or music are you looking forward to? Source: Google+

Sony Xperia T gets James Bond Skyfall theme Posted: 08 Nov 2012 04:40 PM PST Sony has been pretty determined in advertising the Xperia T as a James Bond phone, and I’d say they’ve succeeded. Xperia T owners can take it a step further now with a complete 007 theme pack, thanks to XDA forum member ruwsoft. The theme pack includes ringtones, images, and all kinds of small changes to really get that James Bond feel. It’s a simple installation, but the phone must be rooted. Aside from that, it’s a painless installation; download file, unzip file, drop the .apk in the phone’s system/vendor/overlay/framework/ folder, and reboot. Quick and simple. Hit the source for download links and the post on XDA. So who’s planning on flashing this and running around in a tuxedo for the rest of the night? source: XDA

Symphony replaces sheet music with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 Posted: 08 Nov 2012 04:33 PM PST We’ve seen Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 used for some pretty interesting things, but Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra may have just taken the cake. The symphony is among the first to entirely abandon paper-heavy sheet music in favor of an electronic substitution. The orchestra recently acquired 100 Galaxy Note 10.1s, courtesy of Samsung, to aid them in their symphonic endeavors. Loesje De Vriese of Samsung says the addition of the tablets will inevitably save the orchestra nearly 25,000 euros ($32,000) in paper and adhesive alone, while reiterating the importance of the device’s touch and stylus input for musicians. With the Note 10.1, members of the orchestra can make notations on their electronic sheet music, allowing them ease-of-access and complete freedom over their own playing styles. Additionally, the custom software gives the conductor the ability to make alterations to the music, automatically sending the changes out to each musician’s tablet. Verizon to finish LTE buildout by middle of 2013 Posted: 08 Nov 2012 01:21 PM PST In comments made today at the Wells Fargo Securities Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo indicated the carrier was on schedule to complete the deployment of its LTE network by the middle of 2013. According to Shammo, this is about six months ahead of schedule and will result in the LTE footprint matching the 3G footprint. Shammo indicated the LTE network has been well received by customers with 14.9 million postpaid LTE devices in customer hands. Shammo said 35 percent of Verizon’s overall data was traveling over the LTE network as of the end of September. The LTE network already covers 250 million people, about 80 percent of the U.S. population. For comparison, Verizon’s competitor AT&T will not reach the 250 million mark for its LTE network until the end of 2013. On a related note, Shammo commented that adoption of Share Everything data plans are still higher than expectations with at least 13 percent of the customer base now on one of these plans. According to Shammo, customers average 2.6 devices per account on a shared data plan. source: FierceWireless

Samsung Galaxy Express on AT&T available November 16th for $99 Posted: 08 Nov 2012 12:47 PM PST Yes, you’re reading that title correctly. Samsung is releasing yet another device rocking the ‘Galaxy’ tag. I have nothing against Samsung as a Samsung device is my daily driver, but really? Why not just call it the Mini-Mini? Although not too much of a surprise seeing as we caught wind of this device back in September, it just seems like we’ve been bombarded with Galaxy titles this fall. This device at least makes a little sense as it fills the entry-level, first-time smartphone buyer segment. Samsung now seems to have a well-rounded portfolio as it were. Strike while the iron’s hot, as they say. The Galaxy Express will have a 4.5-inch screen backed by a 1GHz dual-core processor and a 2000 mAh battery powering Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. A 5MP camera and the ability to run on AT&T’s LTE network will round out the package. I realize this is for first-time buyers and $99 seems a little high these days on contract, as there are certainly other deals to be had out there.

Featured Android Game Review: Expendable Rearmed [Arcade & Action] Posted: 08 Nov 2012 10:09 AM PST Originally created by Rage Newcastle, Expendable Rearmed launched on the PC and the Sega Dreamcast in 1999. Gamers quickly embraced this arcade action shooter because of its addictive gameplay, and now this classic game just became available for your Android phone or tablet thanks to Retrobomb. The game is set in AD 2463 in the distant worlds deep in space. Things were going okay until the G’neng came, which is a malevolent bio-mechanical alien race. You are the head of a clone army with expendable units, and your job is to rid of these aliens. You will start near home, work your way through different colonies, and with a lot of work you just might make it to the enemy home world. If you like shooting things up, you will love Expendable Rearmed. It’s a total shootfest as you simply shoot at anything that moves, and even if doesn’t move you can blow it up. You will have your choice of various weapons which include Flame Throwers, Mini-Guns, Phantasm orbs, Alien weapons, SpiraCannons, Heat seaking missiles, grenades, and the almighty railgun. I am not familiar with the original, but this version looks to be as good if not better than it. The best experience will be with a Tegra 3 device, but you don’t need a Tegra to play it. It’s also compatible with Snapdragon, Adreno, Mali and SGX hardware. If you’re lucky enough to have a Tegra 3, you will get enhanced effects such as gorgeous water effects, masses of extra particles and advanced extra shadowing. If you’re looking for a new console-like quality game, Expendable Rearmed might a good choice. The only issue I have is the controls as I had a hard time aiming my shots. It desperately needs Bluetooth controller support in my opinion. My understanding is that it will be compatible with the Sony Xperia Play with an update soon, but that’s too limited. Hopefully they will open it to more controllers, but on the other hand, a lot of you might not find the same issue I did. It’s available now in the Google Play Store for $2.99. Check out my quick hands on video, Retrobomb’s game trailer, and hit one of the download links below. Let us know what you think. Features: * IF IT MOVES… SHOOT IT * * IF IT DOESNT MOVE… BLOW IT UP * * CONSOLE QUALITY * * NO LOADING TIMES * * WEAPONS GALORE * * FABULOUS SOUND * * ACHIEVEMENTS AND GLOBAL HIGHSCORES * * RENDERING EFFECTS FOR TEGRA 3 *
