HP Slate 7 Android tablet
A render of an unconfirmed HP-branded smartphone has hit the web, suggesting that the computer maker may be ready once again to market its own handsets.
The render below, obtained by Phone Arena, shows us a device that seems to run stock Android, while looking rather iPhone-y. Naturally, it can't be confirmed at this time, so take it with a grain of salt, while we wait for HP to unveil a new smartphone of its own.
Except from the image, which could have been easily manufactured, there aren't any details available about this handset. We don't have specs and features and there's no rumored launch date for it. Not even a commercial name is available at this time.
The company who purchased Palm for webOS only to see it die shortly after, is now ready to bet big on Android. The HP Slate 7 is an Android-based 7-inch tablet that was unveiled back in February at MWC 2013 and which is already available in various markets. However, sales must not be that great considering that the device has recently received a price cut.
As for its smartphone plans, HP was rumored more than once to be working on Android handsets. Just recently, an HP executive said that it's not too late to hit the mobile game, and that "when HP has a smartphone, it will give a differentiated experience."
That said, nothing is clear about HP's smartphone plans at this time, but while the company is working on a unique smartphone experience, others will actually launch new devices very soon, some of them quite interesting.
