Ever wonder who designed the Android logo and why it looks the way it does? Irina Blok is that person and created the logo when she was a designer at Google while they were preparing Android’s worldwide launch. Blok and her colleagues set out “to create a look for the software — something that consumers could easily identify.” And that’s exactly what they did. The Android logo is one of the most recognizable out there due to its simplicity.
Blok was told to “involve a robot, and so she studied sci-fi toys and space movies — anything that might” inspire her. But the final choice was based on the pictograms found on men and restroom doors.
What is very interesting is that it resembles the open-source software that anyone could change. Block explains ”‘that was pretty daring‘” because many companies choose to protect their trademarks rather than leaving it available to be used and modified freely.
