According to a Billboard source, YouTube is entering into the subscription music service business. The service, which is possibly just months away, would be much like Spotify, having both free and premium options. Also included in the service would be video component that makes YouTube what it is. The premium option would allow subscribers to pay around $9.99 a month to gain access to a wide array of music. The real standout feature of the service would be the ability to store music for offline listening, and ads would be removed completely. Billboard is also reporting that availability could extend all the way to Google Glass (which had some music files found in a recent APK teardown). The service may even appear alongside the rumored YouTube app redesign.
The only question coming into play would be — what about Google Play Music All Access? Google only launched that service in May and has seen incremental, but much welcome, updates. It’s possible that All Access could have been a stepping stone for this new YouTube service. Successfully obtaining deals with major labels would allow that task to be out of the way by the time this new service launches. Maybe we’ll see them merge at some point? That’s a long shot, but only time will tell how this one will play out.
