HTC One S hits T-Mobile stores on April 25 for $199.99

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 03:08 AM PDT

No big surprises here, but T-Mobile subscribers will finally get that dream phone that has been rather lacking in the carrier's lineup as of late. That's right – HTC One S has been officially announced by T-Mobile, making the HTC One S the first of the One series to reach the eager hands of US customers, after they were first announced way back in February.

HTC One S will not only become T-Mobile's flagship device, but it will also be the first on the carrier to ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4. From the phone's 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 4.3-inch Super qHD AMOLED display, 16GB internal storage, to its unibody aluminum case, everything just scream high-end. Not to mention the HTC One S's 8MP rear camera and ImageSense chip, which critics have lauded as one of the best in the market right now.

According to T-Mobile, the HTC One S will be available for purchase starting from April 25 on the carrier's stores across the US. The only thing that's getting in the way between you and the HTC One S is $199.99 (with the standard 2-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate). It's worth to mention that T-Mobile will include a special version of the popular game "Where's My Water?" with 10 extra levels special for the phone.

Seeing that AT&T has just moved up the release date of the HTC One XL, making the phone available on May 6 for the same price as the HTC One S, you may want to dismiss T-Mobile's finest offering. But really, apart from the extra screen real estate, the Super IPS LCD2, and the higher res front camera, they are all but one and the same, at least in specs. Plus, you'll get the bragging right of having one of the slimmest phones in the market now, thanks to its 7.95mm body (it's 8.9mm for HTC One XL).

Draw Something gets new “drawsome” features

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 02:40 AM PDT

draw something

Draw Something, the app that has united millions of iOS and Android device owners in a world-spanning doodling frenzy, has received some major updates yesterday. So what has OMGPOP, now owned by Zynga (after splashing out $180 million) added to the game?

As far as cosmetic changes go, the updated Draw Something has a new snazzy intro and nicer graphics. In terms of functional enhancements, the biggest change is the fact that players can now leave comments to others once they finished their masterpiece. You can say sorry in advance for your potentially terrible depiction of Kate Winslet or brag about it, if you’re a better than average doodler.

Social sharing was high on the wish list of many players and it's something that the updated version of Draw Something has. You can now share the pictures on Facebook or Twitter – a feature that gamers have been gagging to have since forever. The pictures you drew can also be e-mailed or saved as your phone's wallpaper.

OMGPOP has tweaked the game's mechanics as well, as you're now allowed to undo the last line you drew thanks to the "easy undo" function. There's also a new option that lets you refresh an image simply by pulling it down. For Draw Something fanatics who felt that the game's 99-streak limited their creativity, the developers has increased the streak to 999 in the latest version.

Along with the new update, OMGPOP’s CEO said that there will be a dozen or more celebrity names added to the game's list of words to draw. According to him, "Every week, we rotate a bunch of new words through the game and take out older words. We look at music charts, TV, movie releases, and the like to take the pulse of what's popular and include it in the game."

The updates will no doubt please the 50 million people who've downloaded Draw Something since its availability, just two months ago. Did you know that over 6 billion drawings have been created in OMGPOP’s top-smasher?? Go ahead and share one of your best creative moments with us below.

Best Android apps for poets and poetry lovers

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 09:00 PM PDT

“Yet if hope has flown away, in a night, or in a day. In a vision, or in none, is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream.”

Those were the resounding words of the great Edgar Allan Poe. Poetry is an art of words. Moreover, it is a spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions. From time immemorial, poets have captivated our hearts, fondled our imaginations, and have kept us going through hard times.

Today's new generation of poets have adapted the best of what technology has to offer in their work. Whether it’s the latest Android smartphone or tablet, coupled with the best apps in Android’s infantry, poets–both amateur and professional–are keeping the art alive.

So, if you love poetry, we’ve got something for you. Today, we bring to you the best Android apps for poets. You can read and access loads of poems using these amazing apps from Google Play Store.

POETRY from Poetry Foundation

One of the most popular poetry apps on the Google Play Store is POETRY from Poetry Foundation. Developed by the Poetry Foundation, one of the world’s leading authorities on poetry, POETRY features a huge collection of poems from every poet in the world. The app lets you search for poems by title, line of verse, or simply by the name of the author. What we personally love about this app is the Shake to Change feature, which brings a new poem on the screen with just a shake of your Android device. The Save feature allows you to bookmark your favorite poems for later reading, and the share feature allows you to share your favorite poems with your friends on Facebook and Twitter. T.S. Eliot, Pablo Neruda, Lucille Clifton, Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, César Vallejo, and Heather McHugh are just a few names whose entire collection can be browsed via this app, thus, turning your Android tad into a poet’s den.

Love Poems

As the name suggests, the Love Poems app is a ready-to-access doorway to bring that spark back in your love life by way of poems. The database has a lot of quotes, sayings, and everything love – mostly contributed by the users of the app themselves. With the Love Poems app, you can browse hundreds of love poems and thousands of love quotes in a single tap. The collection is ever-expanding, so you are never at a loss for a quote or two, or a poem, at the right time. Perhaps the best feature of this app is the share feature, which allows you to share your favorite poem or quote in your social networking account. There’s also the SMS feature which allows you to text your poem or quote directly to your loved one’s smartphone. Yes, it’s cheesy and corny. But, strangely, we love it! If you're a hopeless romantic, a true poet all the way, then the Love Poems app for Android is for you.

Poet's Pad – Creative Writing

The Poet's Pad – Creative Writing is an amazing little poetry-writing app that turns your Android device into a poetry writing pad, literally! Just scribble down your thoughts and poems, and the auto-save feature automatically saves all your stuff for later reference. And that is just the basic feature. Poet’s Pad features a dictionary, a thesaurus, rhyming words to achieve that perfect poem, and even an idea generator – just in case you have run out of them. Plus, the email exporter allows you to email your finished poem to anyone in your contact list at a touch. You can even export your poem via email. Furthermore, the theme-based idea generator will give you just the right kind of idea for your mood. That’s because it’s an emotion-based idea generator. These are the few reasons why this app is so popular. The Poet’s Pad for Android is a golden pot for poets.

Hundred Greatest Poems

An awesome collection of poems from only the best poets in the world, the Hundred Greatest Poems app is a great choice when you want the perfect poem for the right occasion. You see, we usually have our way with words, but sometimes, the water just runs dry. So, before you lament over the prose, let the Hundred Greatest Poems app help you. There is a poem for everyone in this app. There are funny poems and there are serious ones as well. There are poems for kids too, and poems for adults of course. In short, it’s an app for all ages. The Hundred Greatest Poems app for Android has a wonderful collection of poems. This app is a must-have for poetry enthusiasts. With this app, you’ll never be short of poems again.

Tang Poetry

If you’re fascinated by Chinese poetry, there’s an Android app for that. The Tang dynasty of ancient China has produced such fine pieces of poetry, so much so that it deserves a whole app for itself. Introducing, the Tang Poetry app for Android! The Tang Poetry app has a collection of the best 300 poems from the Tang dynasty. These poems are more than just poems – they teach us about life and moral values as well. You can search and filter poems by keywords, author, and styles. To our relief, there’s an option to choose between English and Pinyin, thus making this a language app as well. This means that you can read the poems in authentic Chinese, or you can convert them to English for easy sharing and understanding (we prefer the English mode for now). Also, an added feature is the special narration of poems by the famous Chinese broadcaster Xia Qing.

Poems – Shakespeare FREE

William Shakespeare is undoubtedly one of the greatest authors and poets to ever live. And it is no surprise that there exists an app that is exclusively made for him and his work. The Poems – Shakespeare FREE app has the entire poetry collection of the legendary English playwright. The Poems – Shakespeare app has a lot of cool features that makes this app one of the best poetry apps out there. You can listen to the poems on your Android device with the voice narration feature, or you can browse through the extensive collection of poems from the prince of poets. You can also customize the app via the options menu. You can change the text color, font, and background color, and you can bookmark your favorite poems and share them with your friends on Facebook and Twitter, and even copy the poems to a memory card. All these features are free. So, go grab it now.

Gedichte von Goethe FREE

Goethe is another famous poet from Germany. Considered too, mostly by his followers, as the prince of poets, von Goethe is the supreme genius of modern German literature. The Gedichte von Goethe FREE app is a tribute to the great writer. The app has his entire collection, and you have the option to read them in the original German language or convert them into plain English for better understanding. There are over 1000 poems by Von Goethe in this app and there are a variety of themes as well, under which the poems have been categorized, few of which are lyric poetry, verses, prose, sonnets, poems, ballads, lays, world literature, universal literature, and love poems. The app is fully customizable with the option to change the text size, font color, and background color. You can copy the poems to external memory card as well. Overall, this is the best app for all von Goethe fanatics.

Poet’s Corner

Poet’s Corner is the perfect app for the aspiring poet. With a large community of amateur and experienced poets, this is the place where you should be sharing your poems. It’s also the best avenue to get the perfect reviews and suggestions for improvements by experts who are more than happy to help you out. You can post your own poems and read stuff that others like you have posted. And to help you out, the app has got some really amazing features, like Free Form, where in you can just write whatever will come to mind, with no rules or whatsoever. Then there’s Haiku, the syllable-based poetry writing, where you have 3-line poems with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 again in the third. Then there are couplets, odes and love poems. The user interface is simple and easy to use, and all poems on Poet’s Corner are posted as anonymous to protect your identity. Poet’s Corner is one of the best poetry apps on the Android platform.

All Poems (FREE)

Another great Android app for poets is the All Poems (FREE) app. If you’re looking for variety in your poetry-writing, and if you’re looking for a long list of poets and their corresponding works, then this app is for you. Surprisingly, this app has a lot of poems to choose from. It has a huge collection of poems written by some of the best poets in the world. Technically, we love the offline feature of the app. You can add and store your favorite poems, share them via SMS, email, Facebook, and Twitter. For faster searching, you can also browse by theme or keywords. The app is pretty easy to navigate and the quality is good too. The App Poems app is all about variety and it is a definite must-have for all poetry lovers out there.

Thinking and Poems

The Thinking and Poems app is another highly recommended app for poets. Now available in Google Play, this app is a motivational booster and a great app for giving you inspiration. Essentially, the Thinking and Poems app delivers positive poems and quotes daily, so that you can win your day through positive thinking. Yes, it works. With so many problems that we have to face almost every day, we need a good source of inspiration. Apart from our faith, using apps like these is a good way to keep your productivity high in the office. What’s more is that you can share those encouraging thoughts and poems with your friends on Facebook. What could be more than to help yourself while helping others at the same time. Gmail Attachment Download: Full control over where to save email attachments

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 07:00 PM PDT

One of the most common problems that many users have experienced in the past and even up to the present is the inability of the Gmail app to support different file formats and downloading attachments. While most people are happy with the way Gmail handles MS Word, MS Excel, and PDF files, not quite a few are too happy about the way it deals with ZIP files and other less popular formats such as 7Z (7-Zip).  The Gmail Android app doesn’t even  let you save attachments to a custom location on your phone, whether in the internal memory or external SD card.

Despite Gmail's shortcomings, there is always a workaround, thanks to an application known as Gmail Attachment Download.

Gmail Attachment Download is developed by Poofinc Studios and since its release on the Google Play Store, it has been received warmly by many Android users praising the app's usefulness in those sticky situations.  Failed download notifications that you often receive when downloading a file from your Gmail app will be a thing of the past.

The best part of Gmail Attachment Download is that it doesn't show up as an app icon and it works like plugin, much like those found on Google Chrome where you just have to install add-ons or extensions to make your life easier.

The app is relatively easy to use as you only need to download and install the application on your phone.

To make it work, all you need to do is simply press the View/preview button in your Gmail application and select Gmail Attachment Download when you are prompted for a selection. Once that selection is done, the plugin will automatically run in the background and you are given another set of options for where your attachment should be saved.

Select the appropriate location; it can be your internal memory or external storage. After which input your desired file name and click the Save file button. Once that is done, your attachment will then be automatically saved to the folder you specified.

If you're constantly using your phone for reading mail and downloading attachments on the fly, then the Gmail Attachment Download application is a must-have tool for you.  According to the developer, the application supports other email clients, too.

Before you head out into the open, don't forget to grab your copy of the Gmail Attachment Download for free from the Google Play Store. There is also a paid version if you feel the application is worth the investment.

Google Glasses Infographic – Check out these awesome potential real-life applications

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 07:39 AM PDT

We've seen Sergey Brin wear a prototype of it on the street. We've watched numerous parodies of it on YouTube and how the technology was ridiculed by the likes of Jon Stewart (he's old, so he probably doesn't get it).  We've also seen people who just can't wait until the real thing comes out so they made their own version, which may as well represent the view of a good chunk of our readers.

Yes, Google Glasses is the buzz word on everyone's lips. Come on, it's practically a PC (of Android flavor) on your glasses, which lets you double nod instead of double click. How can it not be a cool thing?

Rhetorical question aside, the whole thing just doesn't feel complete without an – wait for it – Infographic of Google Glass and all of its potential applications and uses. We say all, but there are only nine things listed here. The Terminator vision is a cool one, but predicting the end of tablet and smartphones  – well, that's a rather bold prediction. We'll say no more and let you read the Infographic, which was produced by the good folks at Seetio.

What are some potential uses that you can think of? Are you as excited as we are?

Opera Mini 7: Smoother, faster, and improved browser for Android

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 07:25 AM PDT

Your Android phone carries pre-installed applications called stock apps. Your phone carries a stock keyboard, a stock camera app, and a stock web browser. But, if your Android phone already has the required stock applications, why would most users prefer third-party applications on their phones? The answer is simple. Third-party apps offer more enhanced features compared to stock apps. One of the famous third-party apps for web browsing is the Opera Mini web browser.

The newest version of Opera Mini will let you enjoy a newer and faster browsing experience on the web. The updated browser features support for OpenGLES hardware acceleration, more RTL text support, Android Beam compatibility, more Speed Dial tabs, improved tabbed browsing, and an enhanced user interface.

One of the features of Opera Mini 7.0.1 is the support of OpenGLES hardware acceleration. This feature allows the browser to load websites faster, promotes smoother scrolling, and enhances the browser's performance. You can now browse webpages filled with pictures and hardcore graphics smoothly and easily with this neat feature on board. Aside from hardware acceleration, the new Opera Mini now supports RTL text for Arabic and Hebrew in its user interface.

If you own an Android phone running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with support for Near Field Communication (NFC), you might want to consider using Opera Mini as your mobile browser. The latest browser supports Android Beam, a feature that can be found on some phones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and utilizes the phone's NFC chip. With this browser, you can now utilize your NFC chip to instantly beam websites to your friends.

Opera Mini's improved Speed Dial allows you to add more websites. Speed Dial is like a visual bookmark. Tapping a saved Speed Dial will let you instantly browse to its assigned page. Click the box with a plus sign to add a new Speed Dial. From there, you can select from the list of suggested URLs or type in the website's URL. Press the Manage button to rearrange or edit your Speed Dials.

For better multitasking, Opera Mini also offers enhanced tab management. Click the Tab button at the bottom to display the tabs. To add a new tab, just tap the box with the plus sign and you will be directed to your Speed Dial page. Tap another tab to switch to another webpage.

Other new features in the latest Opera Mini are the Exit button and the Find-in-page search option. To activate the Exit button, click the button with the Opera Mini logo to open the main menu. From there, go to Settings > Advance > Exit Button. You can also access the Find-in-page search option on the main menu. The updated browser also includes fixes for bugs from the previous version of Opera Mini.

Several of the great features from previous versions have been retained:  Opera Turbo, Opera Sync, and many more.

For a faster and smoother browsing experience, use Opera Mini 7.0.1 on your Android Phone. You can download Opera Mini web browser for free from the Google Play Store.

Which do you think is better, your stock Android browser or the Opera Mini web browser? What web browser are you using on your Android phone?

Toshiba Excite 7.7 quad-core AMOLED tablet hits the FCC, are you ready to be excited?

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 06:56 AM PDT

Let’s be honest, Toshiba didn’t exactly hit it out of the park with their last batch of Android tablets. This time though, the guys at Toshiba have rethought their whole marketing strategy for this market niche and are bringing to market a fresh new line of "exciting" products.

The Excite 7.7, 10 and 13 were all unveiled last week and are set to hit the market in the next couple of months, targetting technology fanatics concerned about specs, raw power, style and cool looks.

The first of the trio we suspected to be made available is the 10-incher, as it's one of the easiest to market. After all, everybody likes 10-inch tablets, right? Despite this though, the beloved 7.7 AMOLED Quad Core has already been caught sneaking through the FCCand might be coming earlier than expected.

And – if the success of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the rave reviews it has received are to serve as any indication, Toshiba might have a hot little tablet on their hands.

Codenamed AT270, this little guy will most definitely be marketed as the Excite 7.7, or simply the Excite 7, and is truly and simply… exciting! With a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor under the hood and a 7.7-inch AMOLED multi-touch display with a scratch-resistant surface, this looks positively dreamy.

Weighing in at just 380 grams (13.4 ounces), the Toshiba Excite 7.7 might just be the perfect combination of raw performance and AMOLED goodness i have been craving for. I mean, to have an 0.3-inch thick tablet is one thing, but for that same gadget to come with a quad-core chipset, an eye popping AMOLED display and 1 GB of RAM is truly amazing!

The rest of the features are themselves not too shabby, with the running of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, dual 5 MP/2 MP cameras, 32 GB of on-board storage, a microSD card slot, USB 2.0 and microUSB 2.0, as well as WiFI 802.11 b/g/n connectivity and micro HDMI.

Set to cost around $500, the Toshiba Excite 7.7 is clearly not a gadget oriented to consumers on a budget, but will draw some attention from those of you who can afford to look their best and own the best possible technology devices out there.

If you are eager to grab a 7.7 inch AMOLED tablet, then the Galaxy Tab 7.7 still remains a viable choice, albeit still more expensive and with inferior specs. Thankfully, we can all rest easy knowing that the Excite 7.7 will be coming soon, and is set to hit stores on June 10th. That's almost two months from now, which makes for an excruciating wait, but then again the Excite 7.7 truly looks like something worth our patience. Also, that release date is not set in stone, so stay tuned as we bring you more updates on this micro beast of a tablet! AMOLED and quad core might be too much to pass up folks.

What do you guys think, will this little guy look in reality as good as it does on paper? And can the Excite 7.7 make more technology geeks interested in 7-inch tablets these days? Let us know your opinions in the comment section below!

Paying with smartphones to outpace credit cards & cash by 2020, experts say

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 05:51 AM PDT

Cash? Forget it. Credit cards? How dated. More than two thirds of technology insiders believe that paying with smartphones will overtake both credit card payments and cash payments by the year 2020. Incredible as it may sound, Near Field Communications (NFC) technology is expected to build enough inertia over the this decade to cement its role in our daily lives. Is this possible? Read on. Governments love this stuff!

nfc-mobile-payments

The survey – conducted by the Pew Research Center and Elon Univeristy – noted that most companies already involved in financial services market will try to resist the shift towards NFC technology to avoid losing market share. That being said, there are signs that some major players are on board. Visa’s recently announced "one-stop" NFC-based mobile payment solution is one notable exception to the obvious recalcitrance that major, established financial institutions would have. On the other hand, there are a few big companies, as well as a few unique initiatives, that support NFC payments. Google Wallet uses NFC technology, as does ISIS, the NFC mobile payment system backed by several mobile carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. Apple is expected to come up with a payment system of their own by the end of 2012, one that is expected use NFC as well. An alternative to NFC technology is perfectly showcased by Square's "Pay with Square", a payment app that relies on geofencing technology rather than on NFC.

Video of Pay with Square

“There was a relatively strong notion that it’s something that may not happen really quickly due to the reluctance of incumbents to cede their place in the market,” one analyst noted.

Unfortunately, the NFC universe is not perfect by any means at its current state. One example on this topic is the recent finding that Google Wallet can be hacked, something that doesn’t exactly make people trust NFC payments more than credit card payments. However, if the technology insiders interviewed by the survey turns out to be right, the reluctance of the general public to use mobile payments over credit cards or cash will slowly but surely fade away by the end of the decade. Given the importance of the financial transaction market, I'm sure the battle has only begun, so it would make sense to expect a lot of twists and turns regarding the future of mobile payments.

What do you guys think? Will mobile payments take off and represent the main method of payment by 2020? Or are credit cards the best conceivable method for purchasing something? Drop us a line in the comment section below! It's free, naturally!

Beware of fake Instagram app that contains malware

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 04:51 AM PDT

Instagram has been in the news a lot recently. It launched on Android only a few weeks ago and enjoyed over 1 million downloads on its first day on Google Play. Then Facebook decided to buy the 13 person company for $1 billion! Naturally, the Facebook purchase rocketed the app to even greater popularity with the  acquisition being covered by the mainstream media.

When a cyber criminal sees something popular, especially on a mobile device, it becomes a very tempting target and Instagram has been no different. A Russian group has created a fake Instagram web site which offers downloads of the app directly from the site (rather than from Google Play) and, in doing so, is attempting to infect devices with malware.

Tests carried out by Sophos have concluded that the fake app doesn’t even try very hard to copy the genuine Instagram app but instead tries to connect with some Russian mobile networks in an attempt to create money by sending background test messages to premium numbers.

Creating dummy apps infected with malware is a popular technique used by cyber criminals. Recently a fully working version of the insanely popular Angry Birds Space was found with with a variant of the DroidKungFu malware. DroidKungFu contains its own embedded version of the GingerBreak exploit allowing it to silently root the infected device and install itself without any user interaction.

Curiously, the fake Instagram app has several embedded pictures of this man. Is this the app creator? If so, then dumb isn’t the right word. Could it be a sworn enemy of the app creator who is trying to get the man in trouble? Or is it just a random photo? We may never know.

As always, you should be cautious about what you download and from where you download it. Malicious apps create millions of dollars for cyber criminals and they will use almost any scheme possible to try and convince you to download an app infected with malware.
