Path adds camera lens effects to Android application

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 02:34 PM PDT

Path, seemingly capitalizing on Instagram's recent Android success, has added camera lens effects to its Android application.  The 2.1.5 release of the "smart journal"  now allows for an assortment of lens options, including Ansel, Country, Lomo, and Pro. This feature brings the Android version one step closer to matching the iOS counterpart and works in a manner unlike Instagram.  Rather than applying an effect after the picture is taken, these lenses let you see how things will look, in real-time.

Don't go looking at Path as an alternative to Instagram and other photo editing tools.  This one is much more than that as it allows for sharing of thoughts, music, and other stuff across Path and your favorite social networks.  Take a look at the new features from v2.1.5 alone and you'll get a sense as to how rich the Path experience truly can be.

  • New Design — Path has been re-imagined with a brand new design and new types of stories.
  • Covers — Decorate your Path with a unique and beautiful photo– a wallpaper for your Path!
  • Automatic — A journal that writes itself, Path recognizes when you spend time in a new neighborhood or visit a new city and records it for you automatically.
  • Music — Share what you're listening to with your Path friends.
  • Sleep — Record your sleep schedule with your Path. (Path automatically tallies the number of hours you've slept!)
  • Check-ins — Let your friends know where you are through Place Stories on Path. And if you like, check-in on foursquare too!
  • Private — Keeping any post private is a simple option, or you can just share with your friends on Path.
  • Notifications — Receive better push notifications to your Android device.
  • Sharing — Post easily to Facebook and foursquare directly from Path.

Download Path for Android from Google Play.

Verizon’s shared data plans due in summer, aimed at multi-device users

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 01:36 PM PDT

On a call discussing the carrier's Q1 earnings, Verizon CFO Francis Shammo talked briefly about their upcoming  shared data plans.  Without divulging any secrets or spilling full details, Shammo advised that these options should drive additional growth to their network.   As to how things will work remains unclear at this point, however Verizon suggests it will allow for customers to easily add "other devices" to their plan.

If you look at, though there's going to be other categories that drive the growth of Wireless in the future, as I said, we will be launching our data share plan in mid-summer this year. We believe that, that plan, the way we have it designed, will enable our customers to easily connect other devices to that plan.

What would you like to see come out of Verizon's shared data plans?  Would you pay an extra $10 per month to share your plan's 3G/4G data across smartphones and tablets? Would you be more inclined to buy a device from Verizon if that were possible?

The first Intel-based smartphone to run Android will be hitting the streets in but a few short days.  Arriving in India on April 23, the Lava XOLO X900 becomes Intel's first major attempt to take on ARM in the handset industry.  Pricing for the phone shakes out to be roughly $424 US dollars (INR 22000) which sounds about right to us considering the hardware.

Specs for the XOLO X900 include a 1.6GHz Atom Z2460 processor, 16GB storage, a 4.03-inch (1024x600) LCD display, an 8-megapixel camera, and 3G connectivity. Unfortunately the handset is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Ice Cream Sandwich promised "shortly thereafter". There's no indication just yet that we'll see the XOLO X900 come anywhere near our borders, however a larger rollout is slated for May.
