Android grows to nearly 80% of smartphone market as Apple dips Aug 8th 2013, 16:54, by Scott Webster Android, as a platform, has grown to reach nearly 80 percent (79.3%) of the smartphone market, according to a new International Data Corporation (IDC) report. The same time frame (Q2 ’12) saw Android leading the industry with 69.1 percent of the market. So, who did Android steal a bit of the pie from this time? Vendors shipped a total of 236.4 million smartphones in 2Q13, up 51.3% from the 156.2 million units shipped in 2Q12. Second-quarter shipments grew 9.3% when compared to the 216.3 million units shipped in 1Q13. In terms of share percentage, Apple, BlackBerry OS, Linux, and Symbian gave up ground. Of these, only Apple actually shipped more devices in the comparative time frame. Suffice it to say, losing market share and volume is not something that leads to long term viability.
