Samsung unveiled their new Galaxy Gear wristbound wearable devices today at their Unpacked Event. The new accessory is heavily geared toward interaction with the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3, but updates are promised so Galaxy Gear will also work with Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S 4, and Galaxy Note II devices. Samsung CEO JK Shin describes Galaxy Gear as “smart freedom” that lets users maintain connections to the people in their world without having to constantly check their smartphone.
Samsung has beefed up their S Voice app for the Galaxy Gear devices, enabling users to make calls, create calendar entries, or other tasks using voice input only. The devices include a microphone and speaker that will enable a user to answer a phone call just by placing their hand next to their ear in an “air phone” movement.
Samsung also included an app called Memographer on the Galaxy Gear device that takes advantage of a 1.9 MP camera built into the wrist strap of the device. With a quick swipe of the screen, the user can snap a quick picture before the moment is gone. Other apps allow for the quick capture of memos and reminders.
Samsung indicates the Galaxy Gear can last 25 hours on a single charge. This powers the 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen running at 320×320 resolution and the 800 MHz processor. Samsung also packed in a gyroscope and accelerometer so the device can detect movement, whether for control purposes or to record information, like distance traveled when working out.
Samsung’s Galaxy Gear will be available September 25th in six different colors: Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green.
