Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play Edition have discovered an annoying surprise included in the Android 4.3 update that started rolling out last week. Due to setting in a file that was included in the update, many applications are not able to write data to the microSD card. The problem is with a set of permissions that control what can and cannot access the microSD card.

Two solutions exist for users while they wait for word from Google as to whether a fix will be pushed out. First, users indicate the ES File Explorer app has the necessary permissions post-update to still access the microSD card. So files can be moved manually from internal storage to external storage. Others may have the same ability, but ES File Explorer is known to work.

The second option requires a rooted device and the willingness to edit a system file. Users can open the file /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml, find the entry for permission on WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, then add a line to include the group name media_rw. When the edits are completed, the section should read:

<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" > <group gid="sdcard_rw" /> <group gid="media_rw" /> </permission>

The file can be edited directly on the device or pulled off for editing on a computer and then uploaded back to the device. Keep in mind you will be responsible for issues with your device if you decide to edit system files yourself.

We will continue to watch for more information from Google or Samsung as to whether this was a simple oversight or an intentional move on their part.
