Samsung Galaxy Grand DUOS gets Android 4.2 update
Aug 12th 2013, 02:52, by Juan Carlos Torres

Even as Android 4.3 Jelly Bean starts to make its way into Nexus devices and the latest smartphone models, some slightly older phones are still being updated to Android 4.2. The latest to join these is Samsung’s Galaxy Grand DUOS, which Samsung updated last week.

Announced initially for India last January, the Galaxy Grand DUOS is simply a dual SIM variant of the Galaxy Grand which, in turn, was announced in December 2012. Despite the name, the phone’s specs are not so grand but not so terrible either. Running on an unnamed 1.2 GHz dual core processor with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, the phone’s biggest drawback is it’s 5.0-inch display, which only supports a resolution of 480×800 pixels.

The Galaxy Grand DUOS launched with Android 4.1.2 and is now being updated to 4.2.2. Among the improvements included in the update are lockscreen widgets, dedicated status bar toggles menu, daydream screensaver mode, and performance improvements. There are also some new features that have been ported from the Galaxy S4 version of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface like new widgets and homescreens.

The update for the Galaxy Grand DUOS first appeared in Russia but is probably already rolling out to other regions as well. It might take a few days to reach owners depending on the market or the carrier. As with any major Android upgrade, be sure to backup your data and keep the phone properly charged when performing the update.

Korean LG G2 seen with removable battery and micro SD slot
Aug 12th 2013, 02:12, by Juan Carlos Torres

It is a known, but sometimes still perplexing, practice for a smartphone model to have variants available only in certain markets that differ only in some hardware detail. So it comes as no surprise that Korea’s version of the recently announced LG G2 would have some features that, to be honest, would make sense in all markets.

As detailed in our hands-on experience, the LG G2, which was unveiled last week, came with either 16 GB or 32 GB configurations for internal storage. It was also powered by a 3000 mAh battery. However, before the announcement, there have been some confusing information regarding a micro SD slot and a lower battery which were not mentioned during the event.

It seems that the information came from leaks of Korean specs for the LG G2. An unboxing video reveals that the Korean LG G2 indeed does have a micro SD slot for expanded storage. What’s more, although it runs on a 2160 mAh battery, that battery is removable, unlike that of the international G2 version. Below is the unboxing video in Korean.

It boggles the mind sometimes why things are done that way. While the benefits of a replaceable battery is still a point of discussion, having a micro SD card slot is almost standard in most devices today. But that practice probably isn’t going to change soon, so unless you’re living in Korea, you’re out of luck on this one. Or at least until an international version with the same features also becomes available.

Sony Honami leaked camera sample confirms 20 megapixel spec
Aug 12th 2013, 01:42, by Juan Carlos Torres

With barely a month left for its rumored unveiling, leaks regarding the mysterious Sony Honami keep coming in. Now we have some information that confirms some rather impressive details about Sony‘s next big smartphone.

Details of a photo supposedly taken with the Sony Honami’s camera reveal an output resolution of 3936×5248, confirming earlier rumors that the smartphone will be sporting a 20 megapixel camera. Also shown is the camera’s aperture, recorded at f/2.0. With just these specs alone, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think that it will be competing with camera-oriented smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

The rest of previously leaked hardware are competitive as well. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2 GB of RAM, a 5-inch full HD 1080p display, and 3000 mAh battery are definitely things to crave for. There is no new information yet about the supposed 8 megapixel front-facing camera or the purple edition seen in a leaked official photo ad.

Photography aficionados in the Android community might want to keep an eye out for this one. Sony is expected to unveil the Honami on September 4, right around the start of the IFA trade show in Germany, so we might still get treated to new leaks in the coming days.
