iPhone 5S specification rumor wrap-up: this is no Android competitor
Aug 12th 2013, 15:13, by Robert Nelson

A potential release date for the iPhone 5S surfaced over the weekend and while we are going to need the official word from Apple for confirmation, it looks like it may be time to talk a bit about what may be arriving with the next-generation iPhone. There has been talk of both an iPhone 5S and also a lower-priced iPhone 5C.

For the purpose of the iPhone 5S though, much of the talk has centered around an upgraded processor and an improved camera experience. There has also been some talk of the handset arriving with a fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor rumors began when Apple purchased AutheTec, a biometric security firm and coming more recently there was also evidence of the scanner found in a beta release of iOS 7.

That brings the next point, while there seems to be some back and forth from iPhone users in terms of the look of iOS 7 — that may be the most dramatic change many users notice. The iPhone 5S is expected to retain the same display size and also the same form factor as the current model iPhone 5. Of course, that goes to previous history in which Apple releases a new iPhone one year and follows it the next year with an incremental update the following year.

Touching back on those improvements, there has been talk of an improved display. The catch here, the resolution isn’t expected to be any higher, but instead more general improvements such as to contrast and viewing angles. The processor is expected to see some improvements as well as the GPU. The RAM is expected to remain the same at 1GB, which many Android fans will likely laugh at considering many Android handsets have shifted to 2GB at this point.

The camera could arrive as a higher resolution, possible as high as 13-megapixel however the camera related improvements seem to be surfacing around the flash. Leaks have pointed towards a dual-flash setup. All that being said, it is looking like this will be another incremental update for the iPhone. Or in other words, it doesn’t look like a year that Android fans will feel any pressure to make the switch to iOS.

Acer Liquid S2 outed in leaked roadmap
Aug 12th 2013, 14:27, by Robert Nelson

Acer unveiled the 5.7-inch Liquid S1 phablet back in early June and while that handset is still relatively new, it looks like the follow-up is already in the works. Taking that a step further and it looks like some details of that follow-up device have recently leaked. What we are seeing is coming by way of a leaked company roadmap from Acer.

The handset is dubbed the Liquid S2 and it is currently sporting a codename of Hemingway. More exciting though, this leaked roadmap does come with some specs and it looks like the display will be slightly larger as compared to the Liquid S1. The roadmap points towards the handset as arriving with a Full HD resolution. What we are seeing has the Liquid S2 sporting a 5.98-inch Full HD IPS display.

Other specs coming from this roadmap point towards a handset with a quad-core 2.3GHz processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. While not specifically mentioned just yet, it is believed the processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Of course, processor aside, that same can be said about all these specs given this is just an early leak. There wasn’t any mention of the camera, however the other remaining spec detailed in this leak was NFC.

According to the screenshot, it would appear as if we may be seeing an official announcement sooner rather than later. That image has the Liquid S2 as launching in August 2013. Time will tell how accurate that ends up being, but with the month nearly half over it would appear as if Acer may be running out of time.

The other bit that remains a mystery is which version of Android will arrive with the handset. The roadmap details have it listed as being “K OS” which of course has brought speculation of it being Key Lime Pie. We aren’t fully convinced that will be the case, however it would certainly be nice to learn what we can expect from the next major release of Android.

Verizon Moto X teaser page goes live
Aug 12th 2013, 13:54, by Robert Nelson

Rumors are pointing towards the Moto X coming available as of August 23rd. More specifically, we have seen August 23rd pegged as the release date for Verizon Wireless and then we had seen that same date thrown in the mix for all carriers. While Verizon Wireless has yet to confirm that date, they have made a bit of forward progress towards a release in the form of a teaser page.

At this time the Verizon Moto X page points towards the handset arriving in the “coming weeks.” The page doesn’t allow for pre-orders, but does allow you to trade an email address towards the promise of getting future Moto X related updates. More important though, Verizon has said the handset will be available in Woven Black and Woven White.

Big Red has also used this teaser page to remind users that the Moto Maker customization options are coming sometime “later this year.” Basically this just means Verizon users will need to start deciding whether they want to go with black or white or wait a little while longer and get a customized model.

Aside from the upcoming launch of the Moto X, Verizon Wireless still has some other handsets coming this month. They will be launching the new DROID line of handsets. This includes the DROID Maxx, Ultra and Mini. These handsets are all available for pre-order at the moment and are selling for $299.99, $199.99 and $99.99 respectively.

Those are the two-year agreement prices, however we also know that Verizon will be launching VZ Edge on August 25th. We aren’t necessarily convinced Edge will be the best way to go for everyone, however we suppose it is nice to have the option available. After all, there are likely more than a few willing to shell out more money each month for the privilege of not having an agreement and being able to upgrade more often.
